Samuel Adams and Berkshire Mountain Distillers Creating Whiskey From Beer (PR)

BOSTON – Today, Berkshire Mountain Distillers, Inc. (BMD) and Samuel Adams officially announce their collaboration in a multi-year project to distill two world-class craft beers into two never-before-tasted spirits, further pushing the boundaries of beverage innovation. The two brews — flagshipSamuel Adams Boston Lager and smoky, complex Samuel Adams Cinder Bock — will both be triple distilled at BMD’s distillery in Great Barrington, Mass., then barrel-aged in wood. The aging of whiskey is a very complex and multi-faceted process making it difficult to pinpoint an exact release date; however, BMD feels that they should be ready for release by 2015.

Both BMD and Samuel Adams share great passion for the art and science of beverage-making, and also the same philosophy — use only the highest quality ingredients to produce award-winning, innovative craft beer and spirits. The brewers at Samuel Adams and BMD founder Chris Weld together tasted several beer styles and their distilled products from trial distillations before deciding to use Samuel Adam Boston Lager and Samuel Adams Cinder Bock, two distinct beers, for this project. The two brews differ greatly in taste profile and will each be distilled — a process using heat to separate liquids according to their volatility — three times to allow for the creation of two very unique spirits.  The distilled Samuel Adams Boston Lager, noted for its upfront malt and earthy hop flavors, will then age for two years in vintage wooden bourbon barrels, generating a smooth whiskey with sweet fruity ester notes and a very slight bitterness.  The distilled Samuel Adams Cinder Bock, a fiery rauchbier/bock combination, will age for two years in wooden, oak barrels, some previously used for extreme beer, Samuel Adams Utopias®, producing a very rich, bold whiskey.

“One of the best things about being a brewer is that the learning never ends.  It’s been fun to share my knowledge of brewing with Chris throughout this process, and he has certainly taught me more than a thing or two about distilling,” says Samuel Adams founder and brewer Jim Koch.  “There are many parallels between making spirits and brewing beer.  Marrying the two not only makes sense, but will also produce a drink that beer- and spirits-lovers alike can enjoy.”

Due to the distillation process and barrel aging methods, 12,000 gallons of beer yields about 500 gallons of whiskey, making the final product a unique and rare find.  Though exact pricing and availability of the final products are yet to be determined, the spirits will be available through Berkshire Mountain Distillers’ distribution network. The barrels, once emptied, will make the trip back to the Samuel Adams brewery in Boston, where they will be used for a yet-to-be-named barrel-aged beer.

It has been a privilege to work with Jim and the brewers — their knowledge and infectious enthusiasm has found its way over to us here at BMD,” says Chris Weld, founder and distiller of Berkshire Mountain Distillery. “Jim is a pioneer in the field who has paved the way for many artisans to follow. We are looking forward to working with Samuel Adams to produce two excellent whiskies from two stellar beers. The only difficult part will be waiting for the final product to be released.”

ABOUT THE BOSTON BEER COMPANY:

The Boston Beer Company began in 1984 with a generations-old family recipe that Founder and Brewer Jim Koch uncovered in his father’s attic. Inspired and unafraid to challenge conventional thinking about beer, Jim brought the recipe to life in his kitchen.  Pleased with the results of his work, Jim decided to sample his beer with bars in Boston in the hopes that drinkers would appreciate the complex, full-flavored beer he brewed fresh in America.  That beer was aptly named Samuel Adams Boston Lager®, in recognition of one of our nation’s great founding fathers, a man of independent mind and spirit.  Little did Jim know at the time, Samuel Adams Boston Lager soon became a catalyst of the American craft beer revolution.

Today, The Boston Beer Company brews more than 50 styles of beer.  It relentlessly pursues the development of new styles and the perfection of classic beers by searching the world for the finest ingredients.  Using the traditional four vessel brewing process, the Company often takes extra steps like dry-hopping, barrel-aging and a secondary fermentation known as krausening.  The Company has also pioneered another revolution, the ‘extreme beer’ movement, where it seeks to challenge drinker’s perceptions of what beer can be. The Boston Beer Company has been committed to elevating the image of American craft beer by entering festivals and competitions around the globe, and in the past five years has won more awards in international beer competitions than any other brewery in the world. As an independent company, brewing quality beer remains its single focus. Although Samuel Adams beer is America’s largest-selling craft beer, it accounts for only one percent of the U.S. beer market.  The Boston Beer Company will continue its independently-minded quest to brew great beer and to advocate for the growth of craft beer across America. Stone Smoked Porter Variations Arrive (PR)

Special limited Stone Smoked Porter versions bottled for the first time

(Escondido, CA | June 18, 2012) — There comes a time in every beer’s life when it wants to branch out. Try something new. Be adventurous. And while the beloved Stone Smoked Porter–first released in December 1996–has certainly gotten some special treatment over the years, the resulting variations have only been available on a very limited basis on tap or as a rare growler fill. Until now.

A limited number of 12 oz. bottles of Stone Smoked Porter w/ Vanilla Bean and Stone Smoked Porter w/ Chipotle Peppers are making their way to select markets beginning on June 18.

“Stone Smoked Porter is one of the unsung champions of our lineup,” asserts Greg Koch, CEO & Co-Founder of Stone Brewing Co. “It vies for the title of “most food-friendly” of our beers, and the breadth of its ability becomes even more evident in these two delicious variants.”

Stone Smoked Porter w/ Vanilla Bean was first brewed in late 2006 as the brainchild of Stone Brewing Co.’s Small Batch Brewer, Laura Ulrich. Inspired by having Stone Smoked Porter poured over a scoop of vanilla ice cream, she had a stroke of brilliance and history was made.

Stone Smoked Porter w/ Chipotle Peppers was conceived in May 2006 as an idea from Merchandise Manager Chris Carroll, who proposed making a spicy one-off beer as a special Cinco de Mayo growler fill. Originally dubbed “South of the Border Stone Smoked Porter,” the resulting beer was an incredible interplay of roast, smoke, and a touch of heat, and has remained a popular, albeit rare, treat ever since.

“For now, these are one-time bottlings,” continues Koch, “but we reserve the right to change our mind about that at any time.” Fans are invited to share their thoughts on each version at http://www.stonebrewing.com/VanillaOrChipotle

Dundee Summer Wheat Returns (PR)

ROCHESTER, NY — Warm temperatures and long summer nights: the perfect reason to ditch the oven and heat up the
grill.  Grilling season has arrived and that means Dundee Summer Wheat is back. The limited‐release, American‐Style
Hefeweizen will be available now through July; but this summer, Dundee Ales & Lagers is offering more than just
great beer. We’ve teamed up with Dundee lead brewer Jim McDermott to provide craft beer drinkers with creative
summer grilling tips and food pairings to complement Dundee’s signature Summer Wheat brew.
“Dundee Summer Wheat is the perfect grilling beer. It’s versatile and a great compliment to any meal,” McDermott
said.

This season, McDermott recommends pairing Dundee Summer Wheat with grilled salmon. “Drizzle a little lemon
butter, garlic, and salt and pepper on a piece of fresh salmon and grill to perfection,” said McDermott. “The citrusy
hop notes will complement the tangy salmon flavors nicely.”
McDermott also suggests pairing Summer Wheat with fresh mussels. “Summer Wheat goes particularly well with
mussels because it complements nearly any style or preparation of the shellfish,” said McDermott. “Not only does it
pair nicely, but it can be used in the recipe preparation as well.” McDermott recommends Dundee Summer Wheat
Steamed Mussels.

Non‐seafood lovers are also in luck. Dundee Summer Wheat pairs nicely with a variety of salads. McDermott suggests
coupling Summer Wheat with one of your favorite summer salads. “It can be difficult to find the right beer to drink
while eating a salad,” said McDermott.  “Throughout the summer, we have a large variety of salads, including
everything from fruit, to spinach, to Caesar, to garden. Dundee Summer Wheat handles these variations well because
of the mildly spicy wheat and rye combination, in correlation with the citrusy hop notes.”For a refreshing flavor, McDermott crafts Summer Wheat with 40 percent wheat in the grain bill, a touch of rye malt and aroma hops. Typical of American Wheat style, the beer has a cloudy appearance, and a rich, frothy head. The
unique recipe results in a beer with a complex, but light flavor, citrusy aroma and crisp finish.

Dundee Ales & Lagers brews and releases four seasonal beers for a limited time throughout the year.  Summer
Wheat will be followed by the return of Oktoberfest this fall and a new addition to the seasonal line‐up this winter.
The seasonal specialties will be available on draft at bars and restaurants, and in six‐packs at convenience and
grocery stores across the United States. Dundee Summer Wheat rates 18 on the International Bittering Units scale
and is 4.5 percent ABV, making it easy to drink and a perfect addition to summer parties, picnics and outdoor events.

New Belgium Brewing’s “Tour de Fat” Raises More Than $2 Million for Local Nonprofit Organizations

New Belgium Brewing’s “Tour de Fat” Raises More Than $2 Million for Local Nonprofit Organizations

Tour de Fat is Currently in its 13th Season of Celebrating Bikes, Community and Creativity

Ft. Collins, CO, June 11, 2012 — New Belgium Brewing’s Tour de Fat, the nation’s most colorful bike festival, has passed the $2 million mark for total funds raised for nonprofit organizations. Tour de Fat began 13 years ago and has grown into a 15-city nationwide tour focused on honoring mankind’s favorite invention: the bike.

At every stop, Tour de Fat brings together thousands of people for a costumed bike parade, New Belgium beer, a car-for-bike swap, live entertainment, local food vendors, bike competitions (like the “slowest race” and bike jousting) and much more. But the free event is truly focused on philanthropy. Money raised through beer and merchandise purchases is channeled back into each community through local nonprofit organizations generally focused on bike advocacy.

“This milestone shows that Tour de Fat really reaches into communities for much longer than one day at the park,” said Matt Kowal, Tour de Fat Impresario. “The stories we hear from local folks who are committed to community involvement inspire us. We couldn’t have raised more than $2 million without the tremendous support we receive in every city and we’re extremely thankful.”

Over the course of Tour de Fat, raised funds have made a tremendous impact across the country, with money going toward trail maintenance, safety education, lobbying for better bicycle communities and a wide variety of other impactful initiatives, including:

  • Overland Mountain Bike Club has used funds raised from the Ft. Collins, CO stop to fund Outreach Days such as Take a Kid Mountain Biking Days, Educational Trail Days at trailheads, helmet programs for kids and to support high school mountain biking.  Overland Mountain Bike Club also used the funds to build and maintain trails and to outfit its Mountain Bike Patrol members and make sure they have the proper first aid and mechanical training.
  • Southwest Idaho Mountain Bike Association (SWIMBA), has used funds raised from the Boise, ID stop to buy new bikes for SWIMBA Bike School.  Money also went toward BYRDS (Boise Young Rider Development Squad), which teaches kids skills and etiquette for road, cross and mountain biking.  In addition SWIMBA gave some money to Eagle Cycle Park, which has a BMX track, cross-country and downhill trails and funds are going toward tail easements.
  • West Town Bikes used funds from the Chicago stop to develop new programs, upgrade facilities, pay rent, and to allow the group to continue to be on the forefront of bicycle advocacy by offering direct services that aren’t found elsewhere in Chicago.  West Town Bikes promotes bicycling through bicycle learning workshops, including mechanics workshops and youth programs.

This year’s stop in Nashville, the first festival of the 2012 tour, is what pushed the grand total to more than $2 million. The event benefited Walk/Bike Nashville, Ride for Reading, and SoundForest.

“Tour de Fat is many things to Nashville; it is an enabler, an educator, a voice, a uniter, inspiration, a life changer and a damn great time,” said Thomas Solinsky, executive director of SoundForest. “New Belgium Brewing enables our local bicycle advocate nonprofits to do great things. In fact, an outcome of last year’s Tour de Fat was the forming of the NashvilleBicycleAlliance.org.”

In 2011 alone, Tour de Fat traveled to 13 cities, attracting a total of 69,550 festival attendees and 41,150 parade cyclists.  It also raised $401,563 and boasted an impressive 90 percent diversion of waste from landfills.

Tour de Fat 2012 is cycling through each of the following cities:
Nashville, TN — June 2 — Centennial Park
Washington DC — June 16 — Yards Park
Durham, NC — June 23 — Diamond View Park on the American Tobacco Campus
Atlanta, GA — June 30 — Historic 4th Ward Park
Milwaukee, WI — July 14 — Coast Guard Event Area, McKinley Park
Chicago, IL — July 21 — Palmer Square
Minneapolis, MN — July 28 — Loring Park
Boise, ID — August 18 — Ann Morrison Park
Fort Collins, CO — September 1 — Civic Center Park Area
Denver, CO — September 8 — City Park
Los Angeles, CA — September 15 — Los Angeles State Historic Park
San Francisco, CA — September 22 — Lindley Meadow in Golden Gate Park
San Diego, CA — September 29 — Golden Hill Park
Tempe, AZ — October 6 — Tempe Town Lake
Austin, TX — October 20 — Fiesta Gardens

New beer celebrates Stone Ruination IPA turning the big 1-0 (PR)

(Escondido, CA | June 5, 2012) — Stone Ruination IPA, the first full-time brewed and bottled Double IPA on the planet, is celebrating its tenth anniversary this June. And what better way to celebrate a glorious decade of hoppy decadence than with even more hops?

Beginning June 11th, Stone Brewing Co. will unleash the brand new, lupulin-loaded Stone Ruination Tenth Anniversary IPA. “We took the unapologetically hoppy Stone Ruination IPA–so named for its ruinous effect on the palate–and hopped it to high hell,” explains Stone CEO & Co-Founder Greg Koch.

“We actually amped up everything,” continues Brewmaster Mitch Steele. “We added more malt to bring the abv up to 10.8%, and the amount of hops we used almost defies reason,” he jokes. “Stone Ruination IPA already uses 2.5 pounds of hops per barrel, which is more than double the amount we use in any other core beer. For this anniversary version, we went double again, and used a most impressive 5 pounds of hops per barrel!”

Green Flash Launches Brewing It Forward Program (PR)

(San Diego, CA) — Green Flash Brewing Co. is proud to announce the upcoming launch of Brewing It Forward, an ongoing local charitable giving program that will benefit San Diego-based, grassroots charities. The platform will be supported by sales proceeds from the brewery’s new San Diego beer series which includes 30th Street Pale Ale,Park West Porter, and East Village Pilsner.
On Tuesday, July 26th from 3pm — 9pm, the brewery will host an event at the brewery to kick off the initiative as well as to celebrate the first-time 12oz bottle-debut of these three locals-only brews which will be sold by the case exclusively from the Mira Mesa Tasting Room. Brewing It Forward will be an ongoing program, and Green Flash will donate a portion of proceeds from all case sales of the beers from the San Diego series to hyper-local charities in need. The program is in line with the brewery’s dedication to community-minded, philanthropic endeavors and also pays homage to some of San Diego’s up-and-coming communities and craft-beer loving neighborhoods.

“We developed the Brewing it Forward program to offer our community a distinctive range of San Diego neighborhood-inspired beers to directly benefit a diverse group of grassroots local charities, ” explains Mike Hinkley, Co-Founder and President of Green Flash Brewing Co. “In addition to creating a platform from which we can execute ongoing charitable giving to help San Diego-based charities in need, we deliberately decided not to distribute these beers out-of-market as a way to support the idea of drinking local beer.”
Five dollars from each case of the beers in the San Diego series sold will be donated to an ongoing rotation of local San Diego charities. Brewing It Forward’s charity partners will change to meet their predetermined and specific needs, and the charities supported by the program will shift when each programs’ goals have been met. In the coming weeks, Green Flash will establish an online system via the brewery’s website to accept submissions from potential charity partners.

While the beers in the series are familiar favorites on draft with local craft beer enthusiasts, the Green FlashBrewing It Forward series introduces new names that pay homage to three of the city’s craft beer-loving neighborhoods (East Village Pilsner was formerly known as Fizzy Yellow Beer and Park West Porter was originally Traditional Porter). Each of the bottle labels depicts a silhouetted image of the skyline or key landmarks unique to each community. Descriptions of the beers in the Brewing It Forward series are as follows:

East Village Pilsner | What Fizzy Yellow Beer Should Be
“Fizzy Yellow Beer” should be full of life and flavor unlike the domestic, mass-produced, insipid, fizzy yellow swill that takes up cooler space and tap handles at markets, pubs and restaurants. San Diego’s East Village is full of life and Green Flash is adding flavor to this burgeoning neighborhood with East Village Pilsnerâ„¢. Made from premium European pilsner malt and Noble hops, traditional pilsner lager yeast ferments the beer and imparts a clean flavor and unique character. Our East Village Pilsner has a bit more hop flavor than even the best European examples, making it truly a Green Flash Original. 5.3%, 35 IBUS

Park West Porter | The Richest Porter on the Hill

Porters are historically the working-man’s drink and Park West Porterâ„¢ is made to suit even the most discerning palate. Rich flavors from Pale, Munich, Biscuit, Chocolate, Crystal and Roast malts appeal to even the most sophisticated denizens on Banker’s Hill in San Diego. A delightful roast malt flavor takes center stage with a Golding hop addition to balance the porter. Tradition dictates a moderate alcohol level and Park West Porter delivers without compromising any flavor or body 5.8% ABV, 35 IBUs

30th Street Pale Ale | An IPA on Any Other Street
Originally released for the Green Flash 6th Anniversary Celebration and brewed to recognize the synergy behind the craft beer culture on 30th Street in San Diego. This American Pale Ale is very well bittered and dry-hopped, making it taste like an IPA by many hop head’s and other brewer’s standards. Our 30th Street Pale Aleâ„¢ has become a staple in all our favorite local neighborhood pubs and restaurants on a stretch of 30th Street from Golden Hill through South Park and North Park to Normal Heights. 6% ABV, 45 IBUs

Brewing It Forward will celebrate its debut on Tuesday, June 26th in the Tasting Room from 3pm — 9pm. In addition to introducing the first charity partner who will benefit from the program, Green Flash will be showing off their brand new bottles and serving the brews on draft. To encourage attendance from beer lovers in some of the neighborhoods that helped inspire the series, Green Flash will be running a complimentary shuttle to and from the Mira Mesa Tasting Room from South Park, North Park and Normal Heights. The bus will stop at Hamilton’s Tavern, Toronado, and Blind Lady Ale House and the schedule for pick up and drop off is available now on the Green Flash website: www.greenflashbrew.com

Odell Brewing promotes the value of play through UnBottled (PR)

Fort Collins, CO — This week, Odell Brewing Company kicked off UnBottled. What is UnBottled? It’s the playful spirit within Odell Brewing that leads to collaboration, creativity and innovation. Play is what Odell puts in all their beers. And what they hope you get out of them.
There’s a growing awareness of the value of play, thanks in part to Stuart Brown’s book, Play; Kevin Carroll’s book, Red Rubber Ball; and recent marketing campaigns from companies like Keen (“Recess is back”) and Purina (“Play like a pet”).
But play has always been part of the Odell culture. They refer to their pilot brewing system as their “playground,” and their mission statement practically makes fun official. They invite anyone in the company to try their hand at brewing. And when they need to let off steam, they’ve been known to have shrink-wrap boxing matches or shoot hoops right there inside the brewery. At Odell, they know that play brings people together, loosens them up and forces them to think differently–and sometimes, to stop thinking so hard.
Playful experimentation has produced some of their most talked-about beers, including St. Lupulin, Myrcenary, Friek and the industry’s first-ever Twitter beer. Each year
they celebrate this approach to brewing at their Small Batch Festival. And of course, they encourage fun and community every day in the taproom, through games, live music and a collective commitment to donate proceeds to a Charity of the Month.
For Odell Brewing, play isn’t a distraction from brewing. It’s a secret ingredient.
Here’s how you can play along:
Great Ball Hunt, June 2: Part treasure hunt, part pub crawl. Odell hides a bunch of UnBottled balls in their favorite pubs around Ft. Collins and Denver; hilarity ensues. The hints are dropping now on Facebook and Twitter.
UnBottled Sharing (June 2nd – July 7): Show the world how you get UnBottled. For every photo or video you post to the Odell UnBottled Facebook app, they’ll donate $1 to one of three non-profits: Trout Unlimited, United Way or Education and Life Training Center.
Playday, June 30: What happens when everyone everywhere plays on the same day? Only the best day ever! Make your pledge to play, starting June 3 on Facebook.
Join the fun at Facebook.com/OdellBrewingCo and twitter.com/OdellBrewing
