Abita “SOS” Arrives

It’s here.. the beer Abita brewed to help with the Gulf Coast recovery in the wake of BP’s oil spill.   From Abita:

“Working with the Louisiana Seafood Promotion & Marketing Board (LSPMB), Abita Beer announced that it has established ‘SOS — A Charitable Fund’ that will assist with the rescue and restoration of the environment, industry and individuals fighting to survive this disastrous oil spill.

The fund has pledged that 100% of all money raised will go to charity. In addition, the Louisiana Seafood Marketing Board will play an important role in advising where the money can do the most good. An advisory committee is being established as the donation process and grant procedures are finalized.

The centerpiece of the fundraising effort is a new charitable beer created by Abita. The brew, called SOS — A Charitable Pilsner, will generate 75¢ for every bottle sold. This Abita Beer is a message in a bottle…a distress signal for the troubled waters of our Gulf Coast. For every bottle sold Abita will donate 75¢ to the rescue and restoration of the environment, industry and individuals fighting to survive this disastrous oil spill. This unfiltered Weizen Pils is made with Pilsner and Wheat malts. It is hopped and dry hopped with Sterling and German Perle hops. It has a brilliant gold color, a sweet malt flavor, and a pleasant bitterness and aroma.

In addition, related retail merchandise (hat, tee shirt, lapel pin, decal and car magnet) will be sold and 100% of the net proceeds will also go to the SOS Fund.”

Terrapin Reunion 2010 Arrives Today!

Every one was starting wonder when this beer was going to hit.  Well it’s being delivered today.   Just to recap –

What is Reunion?  Virgina McLean, partner in the Reunion project, died from complications from multiple myeloma in June, 2007.   She had a fantastic quote“Cancer can cause my death, but it can only take my life if I give it that.” Virginia is the inspiration for the Reunion project, a way to drink good beer and raise money for the Institute for & Bone Cancer Research.  100% of the proceeds go straight to IMBCR. (www.imbcr.org)  This Institute works to prolong the life of individuals suffering from the currently incurable form of bone cancer, and hopes to one day find a cure. This institute does not have a huge operating budget — and proceeds from this Reunion project really make a difference.

Reunion 2010 is Belgian style scotch ale.   It’s brewed with 5 different malts, and hopped with Kent Golding.  A Trappist yeast was used on a scotch ale recipe… thus Belgian style scotch ale.

Availability —  22oz Bottles and Draft.  Draft will be featured at Taco Mac restaurants.

8.5% ABV

SBS Imports (www.sbs-imports.com) is a proud partner in the project also.  SBS is an importers of beers and ciders like Aspall and De Proef.  To read more, AND/or to donate  – www.reunionbeer.com and www.imbcr.org

From the label –

” This year’s beer is Belgian-style Scotch Ale  an nod to Virginia’s Scottish heritage.  The beer boasts a deep amber color with a rich malt palate and subdued hop notes in the finish.. We used an authentic Trappist Belgian yeast strain for complexity and its brewed to an orginal gravity of 1078 and has 30 units of bitterness.  Many thanks to all those who have supported this project and helped us honor Virginia’s memory.  Cheers  Pete & Alan”

Terrapin Brewing to Release Georgia Theatre Benefit Beers

Heard of the Georgia Theatre in Athens, GA?  Tragically, it was taken in a bad fire back in June of 2009.  Georgia Theatre was an Athens landmark for music.  Big bands like REM, David Alan Coe, B-52’S and Widespread Panic have played there.

Terrapin Brewing, stationed in Athens, has announced a series of beers honoring the beloved landmark, and raise money for its rebuild.  The series will be called “Terrapin’s Georgia Theatre Sessions,” and will contain 4 beers released over the course of 2010.

Series lineup in order of release —

Iron Tankard Old Stock Ale (MARCH) — Full details of this beer forthcoming, Old Stock Ale commemorates the original iron swimming pool that resided in the building when first built in 1889.

Double Feature Belgian Dubbel (JUNE) — In honor of the building’s conversion to the Elite Theater in 1935.  Elite Theater showed its last film —“Brotherhood of Death” in October of 1975.  It would not be the last time it was used as a movie theater.

Sound Czech, Czech Pilsner (SEPTEMBER) — Georgia Theatre opened as a music venue from 1977 – 1981.  It reopened again as a music venue in 1989 until the fire in June ’09.

Hoptaneous Combustion Imperial IPA (DECEMBER) — Remembering the fire that destroyed the theater.

Each release will be available in 22 oz bottles in limited quantities sold only in Athens and Atlanta.  Each of the bomber bottles will be individually boxed.   4 “Golden Tickets” will spread out over these releases.  If you are lucky enough to find a Golden Ticket, it will mean you just won a lifetime ticket to the Georgia Theatre when it reopens.   Terrapin is also speculating there could be some special goodies for the winners also.

There WILL be special cask events held in both Athens in Atlanta for each beer’s release.  Believe me; I will let you know when and where.

Be on the lookout for these beers, and help Terrapin get the Georgia Theatre doors open again…
