The Surly Brewer Just Meme’d You

Surly Brewing couldn’t get approval for their forthcoming Overrated IPA featuring a unicorn and fairies. (It’s evil and makes kids want to drink, so says the government.) I’m pretty sure you’d be hard pressed to find someone that wouldn’t want this beer can. What’s more metal than unicorns? Answer: Nothing.

Bears. Beets. Battlestar Galactica.

Sierra Nevada’s New IPA Glassware On Sale

In light of Sierra Nevada and Dogfish Head’s new collaboration Rhizing Bines, the breweries have released a new glass specifically for drinking IPAs. Each brewery now has their own branded glassware for hoppy drinking occasions. The glasses have special features that include thin, round walls to maintain temperature, a slender, bowed shape to amplify hop aroma, wave-like ridges to aerate, a wide mouth to comfortably nose the beer, and a laser-etched logo on the bottom to sustain carbonation in the head.

Spiegelau’s Platinum glass is 100% dishwasher safe. (Beer to hand wash!)

Each glass holds 19oz. ERP $9 [Dogfish Head, Sierra Nevada]

Dogfish and Sierra Nevada Collaborate on Glassware

Dogfish Head and Sierra Nevada are really starting to become BFFs. Moving past just collaborating on beer, they’ve come together to design the new standard for IPA drinking. This new glassware has been designed to completely enhance the way one drinks an IPA with specially designed features exclusively for this style of beer.

These features include thin, round walls to maintain temperature, a slender, bowed shape to amplify hop aroma, wave-like ridges to aerate, a wide mouth to comfortably nose the beer, and a laser-etched logo on the bottom to sustain carbonation in the head.

“I’ve been a longtime believer in the importance of using quality glasswareto enhance the enjoyment of quality craft beer,” says Dogfish Head Founder and President Sam Calagione. “The process of collaborating on the design of this hop-centric glass takes this concept to the next level.”

Glasses are available for $9 at Dogfish’s webstore, their brewery, and the Delaware brewpub.

Surly Learns The Government Doesn’t Like Cartoon Ponies

Surly is laughing. The government isn’t. Surly Brewing was/is planning Overrated West Coast IPA in cans. The artwork (above) makes us think My Little Pony. As funny as this label is – the U.S. government doesn’t feel the same way. Unicorns and rainbows are apparently appealing to underage drinking.

Whether or not you feel the same way – I guess rules are rules. Look for Overrated West Coast IPA on the horizon from Surly.

Flying Dog Brewmaster Makes Bowl Bet with Anchor

Ahead of the Super Bowl, Flying Dog has made a little beer bet. The Dog’s brewmaster Matt Brophy is sure The Ravens will take down Anchor Brewing beloved 49ers. The stakes? The loser pours the Har-bowl winner’s beer for a week in the tap room wearing the winner’s jersey.

We get one opportunity in life, one chance at life to do whatever you’re going to do, and lay your foundation and make whatever mark you’re going to make,” Brophy said. “Whatever legacy you’re going to leave; leave your legacy!”

This isn’t his first football/beer bet Matt Brophy has made. Similar bets with Adam Avery (Avery Brewing/Broncos) and Al Marzi of Harpoon (Patriots) were made too. He’s on a roll. The showdown is Sunday.

No Boys Allowed for this Beer at Brewdog

In response to the continual sidelining of women in the craft beer industry, the ladies of Brewdog decided to take matters into their own hands. On January 28th only the women staff will be locking themselves in and brewing a beer “worthy of any BrewDog tap … a secret recipe for a beer we’d love to drink”

The ladies of Brewdog, or #BrewBirds, have decided to make 2013 the year women begin to take the helms of craft brewing.

“We are tired of being told that our beverage of choice is not for us, of being offered a mediocre wheat beer with a slice of orange when we ask at the bar what beer they’d recommend.” Preach ladies!
