Dogfish Head Gets Go Ahead To Rebuild Brew Pub

Dogfish Head Craft Brewery was denied the first time they attempted to rebuild their Rehobeth Avenue restaurant.

Rehoboth, Delaware has a local law stating that restaurants serving alcohol must be 5,000 feet or less. The current location on 320 Rehoboth Avenue is 8,280, but has been grandfathered into the the law, passed since its opening.

The plan has been to renovate the location, which would expand it to 9,820 feet. To do so would require a new exemption to the 5,000 foot limitation.

Sam and Mariah Calagione’s plea to Board of Adjustment mentioned the need to renovate to stay competitive with local businesses.

The Calagiones won their appeal 4-1.

Lagunitas To Build Third Brewery in Azusa, California

Lagunitas founder Tony Magee revealed on Twitter last night his plans to build a third brewery in Azusa, California.

Initial details from Magee mention initial capacity as 420,000 barrels (13 millions gallons) annually, with a buildout capacity of 1 million barrels.

The project requires no money from the state, or city, and the building is already under construction.

The brewery should be online by 2017.

Oskar Blues Expanding North Carolina Location

Oskar Blues Brewery opened their second location in Brevard, North Carolina in December of 2012. In June, 2015, Oskar Blues embarks on an expansion.

In the first two years of production, Oskar Blues Brevard produced 110,000 barrels (3.4 million gallons) of beer. In 2015, the location will do 85,000 barrels. Oskar Blues is breaking ground on a new expansion this week.

The expansion to Oskar Blues Brevard will include a 9,000 square foot expanded waste water treatment plant, and 17,000 square foot addition for fermentation space.

New brewing equipment includes a second 50-barrel mash tun, a spent grain silo, and more administrative offices.

Deschutes Shops Asheville, North Carolina

Deschutes Brewery (Bend, OR) is in Asheville, North Carolina this week, shopping. For what? A spot for their east coast brewery.

Deschutes President Michael LaLonde mentioned back in April that the craft brewery was shopping for an east coast build. Asheville, North Carolina, which is already home to breweries like Hi-Wire, Green Man, Highland, and Wicked Weed, has gained new neighbors from the west- Oskar Blues, Sierra Nevada, and soon, New Belgium.

Other spots considered include Greenville and Charleston, South Carolina, Virginia, and Tennessee.

Currently, Deschutes ships to 28 states, and has told Beer Street Journal in the past that they are eyeing all 50 in the future.

The new brewery would come online in 2019.

Hi-Wire’s New Brewhouse Arrives in Asheville, NC [PICS]

Hi-Wire Brewing Company (Asheville, NC) brewhouse is officially on the on the ground in Asheville, North Carolina.

Weeks ago, Hi-Wire announced the addition of a production facility just two miles from the currently downtown tasting room. The 30-barrel, 4 vessel brewhouse was built in Europe, and arrived stateside through Savannah, Georgia in three, 40 foot containers. It will take Hi-Wire about a month to assemble and bring online.

“There will be a divergence between what we brew in our South Slope brewery and what we brew at the Bilmore location,” said Hi-Wire Brewing Head Brewer, Luke Holgate. “Biltmore will be the place in which we brew all our core beers and put beer into bottles for consumption outside North Carolina. The South Slope will become a place for experimentation and and creativity. I am excited to have more opportunity to experiment and grow Hi-Wire’s beer portfolio,” he added.

The new location, aka “The Biltmore Bigtop,” should be operational by mid-summer, 2015.

Bell’s Brewery To Expand, Aims at 1 Million+

Bell’s Brewery (Comstock, MI) is planning another expansion. This one will be huge.

Currently, the brewery can produce 500,000 barrels (15.5 million gallons) of beer annually out of their current facility. Soon, Bell’s will add a 200,000 square foot addition to the production facility, which includes 13,000 feet of keg storage, 100,000 square foot warehouse, new bottling area, and more.

The addition should be completed by February-March, 2016. Post expansion, Bell’s Brewery will have the capability of producing up to 1 million barrels (31 million gallons) of beer annually.

Bell’s last expansion was completed in May of 2012 when the brewery added a 200 barrel brewhouse.
