Update on Sierra Nevada’s NC Build

Sierra Nevada’s new digs in Asheville are coming along nicely. The tanks (seen above at the port of Charleston) are being stood upright and the bottling line is in place.

Interesting tid bit. Founder Ken Grossman brought over some salvaged copper from a defunct German brewery to use in the new brewhouse.  It is a tradition they started with the first brewhouse many years ago.

Lagunitas Ups Ante at Chi Location

The fastest growing craft brewery has announced plans to become even bigger. Lagunitas Brewing has been working on a second location in Chicago for a few years now, and says via Twitter that this new location will be doing twice as much as they initially expected. Once this second location is complete Lagunitas will be producing 2.4 million barrels making them the second largest craft brewery just behind Sam Adams/Boston Beer Company (in terms of brewing capacity). According to statistics presented this week at CBC, Lagunitas is the fastest growing brewery so far this year based on sales figures.

Shmaltz Opens Own Brewhouse, Considers Canning, Distilling [PICS]

No more contract brewing for Shmaltz Brewing. Since their inception, Shmaltz Brewing has been contracting their lineup starting with Anderson Valley years back, to the current Saratoga Springs.

Today, Shmaltz is excited to  announce a 50 barrel brewhouse of their own in Clifton Park, New York.  Paul McErlean – the brewmaster behind the recipes now, will be coming on board in the New York spot to oversee completion. The new brewhouse should be online by late April, 2013.

New things to be excited about. The new facility has plenty of barrel aging space. The brewery just packaged another round of Rejuvenator and took part of the batch and is now barrel aging it. This is the first time they have Barrel Aged Rejuvenator. At this point it may just appear as a limited draft offering when ready.

Shmaltz is also considering a canning line at their new facility also. No eta, or orders made.

Even more interesting? Shmaltz would like to starting a distillery.  Jeremy Cowan, founder of Shmaltz, likes the success and creations of breweries that already distill – like Anchor Brewing, and New Holland. It would be a perfect extension of the barrel age series that Shmaltz already releases.

3 Months Later, Oskar Blues North Carolina Is Full

It has been three months since Colorado’s Oskar Blues opened the new brewery in Brevard, North Carolina. Here in March, 2013, the brewery is operating at full capacity. That means all the tanks are full of beer. What is a brewery to do? You add more tanks. We are told six more tanks are on the way to Brevard, allowing OB to make even more beer.

The Brevard, NC brewery now supplies the East Coast Oskar Blues markets. A lot of craft breweries are finding that over time, it is cheaper to build a second brewery then to deal with rising shipping costs.

Check out Beer Street Journal’s look inside the Brevard brewery just before it opened in December.

Founders Brewing Plans Expansion

This April Founders Brewing will break ground on a $25 million 5,500 sq ft expansion of their facilities. The expansion will include more equipment, an educational facility, additional offices, enlarged taproom, deli and company store, and an outdoor beer garden. Other upgrades include efficiency efforts such as heating the offices using  a chiller on our north cellar. With these upgrades Founders yearly production will bump up to about 320,000 bbl and about 50 more jobs will be created. They hope to have the new education center and retail spaces up and running for fall 2013.

Beer Street Journal Video: Inside Terrapin’s New Brew House

Terrapin Beer Co (Athens, GA) is now brewing on a spiffy new 100 barrel Rolec brewhouse. Thats a big step up from the 25 barrel they have been brewing on. About a year ago, we had a chat with Terrapin founder John Cochran about the constraints with the brewery. At the time, the brewery was producing about 21,000 barrels (672,000 gallons) a year. The orders however, totaled more than 30,000 barrels. Not a bad position to be in.  Expansion was imminent.

Setting up for a big 2013, Terrapin is finally able to brew enough beer to meet the demand. Treehugger, and German style alt bier just promoted to year round status was the first beer brewed on the new equipment. Beer Street Journal tagged along with “Spike” on the brew day.
