The Bruery (Placienta, CA) announces the return of Oude Tart…
Tuesday, September 13th marks the second release of Oude Tart, a Flemish-style sour red ale brewed by Orange County’s The Bruery. First released in late 2009, Oude Tart is the most award winning ale from The Bruery, having won a gold medal at the 2010 World Beer Cup in the “Belgian-Style Flanders/Oud Bruin or Oud Red Ale” category as well as a gold medal at the 2010 Great American Beer Festival in the “Belgian-Style Lambic or Sour Ale” category.
As is the case with many offering from The Bruery, Oude Tart is not your typical beer. Based on a classic style with roots in Belgium, the Flemish or Flanders style red ale is aged in oak barrels for anywhere from 6 to 16 months where it has been spiked with both standard brewer’s yeast, the wild brettanomyces yeast strain as well as pro-biotic bacteria such as lactobacillus which imparts a tart and lightly acetic character. At The Bruery, several batches of the beer, which have been aged for different lengths of time, are blended together by taste until considered ideal. The dark malts used in the brewing provide a sweet and roasty balance for the sour character, giving the final version of the ale a flavor of leather, dark fruit and toasty oak.
Often described as the most ‘wine-like’ beer style, Oude Tart is a shining example of the style and is an outstanding beer to prove to the casual beer drinking just how complex a beer can actually be. The first sip may be shocking to your senses, but the final sip always comes too soon.
Oude Tart is available only at The Bruery’s tasting room and The Bruery Provisions shop in Old Towne Orange.

Anyone purchased beer on Ebay? Every hardened beer geek has. Beers are currently on sale on ebay for up to 2000% more than the beer was sold for. Breweries like Lost Abbey, Stone, Russian River, Lost Abbey & currently on sale. Brewers however, dislike the idea. Tomme Arthur pretty much sums up their collective thoughts:
“We believe those selling beer on eBay should be chased down.”

Bruery Reserve Society ’12 Deets, Memberships On Sale 9/26
A letter from The Bruery about the 2012 Reserve Society…
Dear Reserve Society,
A few months back we announced that there would be a change in the way that the Reserve Society would work in the future. We received a lot of feedback from our current members on what they thought of this new concept and after taking a step back and reevaluating our plan, we realized that the majority of the feedback made sense – the Reserve Society shall remain completely intact as it has for the past two years.
The price will be rising, but this rise will go towards a larger supply of included beers (like TWO bottles of Black Tuesday) and we’re working on getting a couple of very cool pieces of quality Reserve Society only merchandise made for you. Also, please note that the tickets for the Initiation Celebration will be sold separately since we realize that not everyone will be able to make it.
As always, the current Reserve Society members have the first right of refusal for the next year’s membership. We will be putting the new memberships on sale on September 26th and you will have until November 11th to guarantee your membership. After November 11th, we will be opening the remaining spots up to new members.
Reserve Society Renewal

-Melange #3
-Barrel Aged Smoked Porter (not yet named)
-Barrel Aged 4 Calling Birds
-Approximately 8 Provisions Series releases including some very exciting collaborations with local breweries
**Please note that some of these beers will also be available to the general public, but as a member of the Reserve Society you are guaranteed the opportunity to purchase these beers without fear of them selling out and for a discounted price**
We are still unable to offer shipping for the 2012 Reserve Society membership. FedEx, UPS, and USPS rules do not currently allow the shipping of beer from a brewery to a consumer (just from a licensee to a licensee, or for the case of wine, from winery to consumer). There is a fairly high risk that if we do ship to you, we will have issues with the packages being confiscated or destroyed once the contents of the packages are known to the shipper. We apologize for the inconvenience, and we will work with our fellow craft breweries to have this policy changed. We will, however, provide storage for all Reserve Society allocations until March 1st 2013. It is the responsibility of the member to arrange for pick up. A trustee can be designated at the time of purchase if the member is not local to The Bruery by having that person’s name as the “Ship To” name. Any changes in trustees must be made by emailing [email protected] [Any beer not picked up my March 1st, 2013 will be considered forfeited and will be sold at auction to benefit a charity of our choosing.]
We hope to see you in February for the initiation celebration!
The Bruery is bringing back Black Orchard today. Orchard was one of The Bruery’s launch beers. A black wheat beer flavored with chamomile.
We will also be re-releasing Black Orchard! Some of you may remember this beer as it was part of our original lineup and is now just a member of the retired collection of “Orchard” beers. Somewhat similar to Orchard White, this one is a 5.7% ABV Belgian-style black wheat beer, or “black wit”, if you will. This dark but surprisingly light bodied beer is very drinkable while still having character and complexity. Chamomile is added for its floral aroma, while the coriander and citrus peel give the characteristics of a traditional witbier. Those great brews will be on all weekend, so come in and get a pint or two!
Snicklefritz just got upgraded to the Provisions series. Snickel was the Pro-Am entry at GABF ’09, created with TAPS fish-house brewer Kyle Manns.
Belgian strong pale ale is spiced with cardomom, ginger, juniper berries and coriander, along with fresh lemon, orange, grapefruit and tangerine zests. After fermentation, the already complex concoction was aged on oak cubes to add one more layer of flavor. 9.5% ABV
Also tomorrow, The Bruery is offering reserve bottles, for tasting room consumption only. Feel free to drool here. Reserve Bottle List website.
OC Weekly just put out it’s Top 10 best beer labels from around the world. There are some surprises on the list. I’m not surprised by Left Hand Brewing making it, nor The Bruery. It was nice to see Red Brick make the cut. The Grimm Brothers beers are quite sexy too. Got a favorite that didn’t make this list? Check out the 10 Ten at OC. [OCWeekly, via @oboudreaux ]
