Terrapin’s Side Project #9 – Dark Side

Dark SideFans of the Terrapin’s side project series, your wait for a new release is over.  The follow up to # 8 — Pumpkinfest is shipping now.   Dark Side is what #9 has been dubbed, and is the last side project release for 2009.

Dark Side is a Belgian Imperial Stout.  While not officially a “style” of beer per say, Dark is born out of a trip to Belgium.   Brewer Spike Buckowski of Terrapin, recently took a trip over to Belgium, land of great beer.  While there, he got to tour Westmalle — one of very few Trappist Breweries in the world.  Spike was fascinated with the yeast havesting.  The idea to brew a trappist yeast based beer was born.  (Want to know more about Trappist?  Click here .)

Thus, here comes Dark Side.  Described by Spike as Darth Vader meets Pink Floyd.  This Belgian Imperial Stout has Belgian chocolate in the flavor, roasted grains, with hints of smokiness in the finish.   Bold malt and yeast are a goal here, with hops added but intentionally subtle.

Ingredients include-

Malts — Two Row, Crystal, Chocolate, Black, Roasted Barley.

Hops — Pilgrim, Golding

ABV — 8.5%

These 22oz bottles are en route to the distributor, and will be available by the end of the week.

First taste in Atlanta will occur TONIGHT at Octane Coffee on Marietta Street (5:30 pm) thanks to Hop City.   Tasting is free, and includes Terrapin’s Dark Side, Wake & Bake ’09, and Hopsecutioner.

Bottle and Tap Sightings soon!

Terrapin’s Wake & Bake Returns…

Wake & Bake 2009It’s baaaaccckkk!  Terrapin’s Coffee Oatmeal Imperial Stout aka “Wake & Bake.”   Part of the breweries Monster Beer Line — the 4 packs are back on the shelves.

This beer started with brewer Spike Buckowski grabbing a bunch of coffee from Jittery Joe’s in Athens, GA and trying different blends and testing flavors.  In the end, Jittery Joes and Spike came up with a custom blend of Costa Rica, Guatamala, and Zimbabwe coffees.  This coffee bean blend is also sold at Jittery Joes much like the Depth Charge blend is/was.  The blend is “Smokey, medium-bodied, with caramel and cocoa hints.”

This Imperial Stout is full of flavor.  I hate to make comparisons, but if you still find yourself without Depth Charge, this is a good substitute.  Keep in mind the beers are different, but there is some commonality involved.  As I mentioned in the Depth Charge post (Read it here) , when dreaming up the next Left Hand/ Terrapin collaboration, Wake & Bake was part of the inspiration.  I just finished my first glass of this release, and I wish I had bought more. The 3 left won’t last long.  2009 edition is quite tasty.

ABV — 8.1%

Malts — 2 Row Pale, Flaked Oats, Flaked Barley, Chocolate Malt, Black Malt, Roasted Barley

Hops — Columbus, Northern Brewer.

Jittery Joes — Wake & Bake Bean Blend

Available — 1/6 barrel, ½ Barrel, Cases, 4 packs.

Update – 12/5/09 – Tapping now at Brickstore Pub

Brickstore’s 1st IPA Fest – CHEAT SHEET!

No catchy picture for this one. Its a long post.

Brickstore Pub on Saturday October 10th is hosting its first “Hop Harvest” Fest. All 25 taps will be featuring IPAs. Here is a little back-story on the India Pale Ale, in case you never fully knew the style. If you were going to draw up a family tree, the Pale Ale would be the father of the IPA. Pale ales were denoted by the use of pale malt, circa 17th century. The pale ale style has changed over time, and by the mid 18th century coke fire malt was used to produce a beer that was actually paler than its predecessors.

Now, I tell you about pale ales to lead to this. George Hodgson Bow Brewery is attributed to the world’s first IPA. This IPA was a pale ale as described above, that was well hopped, termed October Beer. (See posts about origins of names and style.) This October beer was meant to be cellared for a year or longer. The East India Trading Company (think high school history class,) exported Hodgson’s beer to India — which survived very well on the long trip, thanks to the hoppy nature of the beer acting as a preservative. Ultimately after business deals going bad with Hodgson, other breweries began producing this hoppy style of pale ale, and the demand for an “India Pale Ale” was born.

There’s your history lesson. Knowing the style helps you appreciate your beer. So here is a cheat sheet of the line up of the 25 IPA’s to be featured on Saturday —

Smuttynose “Big A” — Double IPA (DIPA) 9.2% ABV. Part of Smutty’s big beer series. Seasonal release.

Terrapin/Left Hand Collaboration – Depth Charge

Terrapin / Left Hand Collaboration # 2

Terrapin / Left Hand Collaboration # 2

By now I’m sure many of you have at least heard the name “Depth Charge.” DC is the 2nd installment of Terrapin/Left Hand Brewing’s Midnight Brewing Project.

The Midnight Brewing Project was born over a few pints at the Brickstore Pub late one night. Spike Buckowski was drinking with Left Hand brewer Ro Guenzel, dreaming up a beer dinner in Colorado. What started as a beer dinner, ended as a collaborative brew — the first taking place at Left Hand. The result was a black rye lager named Terra-Rye’zd. Terra-Rye’zd debuted at The Great American Beer Festival, and was so successful, the second installment was brewed at Terrapin. AKA — Depth Charge.

Depth Charge took a little time to design. Emails were passed back and forth from brewery to brewery coming up with the concept. Looking into the successful brews by each brewery — Left Hand’s Milk Stout, and Terrapin’s Wake and Bake Oatmeal Porter, an Espresso Milk Stout wasn’t far stretch.

The coffee beans in DC come from Jittery Joe’s in Athens, Ga. When Left Hand got to Athens, the brewers took a stroll over to Jittery Joe’s Roasting House to test out beans. The coffee beans were tasted to look for the beans that would present the best mouthfeel for the brew, without being too light or too acidic. Ultimately, a blend of beans was roasted and used — consisting of Nicaragua, Brazilian, and Sumatra.

DC is a blend of these beans, lots of German malts (Spike of Terrapin loves them,) and a version of Left Hand’s milk stout. Created in merely 2 days, Depth Charge is a very unique 1 time brew that is a very balanced, espresso infused stout. It really changes how one views coffee beers.

Currently tapping at Brickstore, and Taco Mac Metropolis, it is expanding to many more T Mac taps this week. Depth Charge is also available in 22 oz bottles — average price found — 7.50. Also, Jittery Joe’s is selling limited release coffee cans of Depth Charge ( non alcoholic of course.)

Tasting Notes:
I loved this brew. There is a strong coffee (espresso) flavor at first taste. Mocha is very prevalent. Honestly, the coffee flavor is so bold that its easy to forget you are drinking a beer. The milk stout is a sweeter than a regular stout, and that really brings it all together. If you love coffee, don’t miss this beer! (7% ABV)

Terrapin’s Side Project #7 – Maggie’s Farmhouse Ale

Maggie's Farmhouse Ale

Maggie’s Farmhouse Ale

Terrapin’s newest side project series is on Atlanta shelves now. Maggie’s Farmhouse Ale follows up 90 shelling for a late summer entry.

While an old style, the popularity of farmhouse ales has grown over the past few years. Farmhouse ales can be further broken down into 2 subcategories based on geographic region. France — Biere de Garde (keeping beer), and Belgium — Saison (season.)

Saison’s originate from low ABV pale ales produced in farmhouses in Belgium, specifically Wallonia (a French speaking area, thus the French overtones in many saison brews.) Originally produced in order to refresh (and hydrate?) farm workers, the style has grown from there. While originally low ABV, 3-4% it’s decisively harder to find one that low now.

Saison’s are typically bottle conditioned (adding a small amount of yeast, sugar, or wort) and often times corked. A strong characteristic of Belgian beers, the yeast strains involved in saisons add to its unique flavor.

With that bit of background, here’s a little info from Spike, owner/brewer of Terrapin Brewery –

Welcome to the next version of Terrapin’s Side Project series of beers. Volume #7 “Maggie’s Farmhouse Ale.” Brewing this style of beer was as exciting as it was challenging because of it’s high fermentation temp. (90 F) and its finicky yeast strain. You’ll get all the aroma and flavors you’d expect from a farmhouse ale out of Maggie’s. The nose is a combination of grassy and spicy yeasty notes with an underlying bready earthiness character. The flavor is slightly sweet up front with a tartness in the middle followed with a white pepper/tart finish. Maggie’s offers the beer lover an old world style that is very pleasing to drink by itself or paired with fine foods. Cheers! Spike

ABV: 6.0%
Malts: 2-Row Malt, Vienna, Rye, Wheat, Flaked Oats, Acidulated
Hops: Super Styrian, East Kent Golding, Hallertau Hersbrucker

Rare Beer Opportunity TONIGHT! – Left Hand/Terrapin Collaboration Casks Tonight!

Another rare “beerportunity” is upon you this July 16th…

If you don’t know already, Left Hand Brewery has been in Athens, Ga this past week working on a collaboration brew called “Depth Charge.” (Espresso Milk Stout.) More to come on that later…

In celebration of this collaboration, Left Hand and Terrapin will be bringing a cask each to Brickstore Pub in Decatur.

Left Hand is bringing Left Hand is bringing Jackman’s Pale Ale, Dry Hopped w/ Mt. Hood and Cascade Hops. Just a little knowledge – Mt Hood Hops are a genetic combination deriving from Hallertau hops around 1983. Mt Hood has a spicy flavor, and is implemented in many lagers. Cascade Hops are a derivative of Fuggle hops, dating back to the mid 70’s and are more floral. Often used in pale ales.

Dry hopping a beer ( for instance this cask) is an act of introducing hops after you have boiled your wort (wort = beer mixture.) Dry hopping gives your more hop flavor to your final product without adding a lot of bitterness. Trust me, is sounds complicated, but hopefully you get the general idea of what makes a special cask like this interesting…

Terrapin Brewery is bringing a sneak preview of their recent addition to their side project series – Maggie’s Farmhouse Saison. After speaking to a couple a of people at Terrapin, I can tell they are QUITE excited about this release.

Maggies Farmhouse Saison is a mixture of rye malt, wheat malt, and Dupont House yeast strain – the same yeast strain that is used in Saison Dupont. (Another Belgian beer. Tasty. Find it, try it… ) All the Terrapin Side Project series have been absolutely tasty, so I hope you are excited to taste this release as I am.

With that said, I hope to see you there. Don’t miss out. If you see me there, say hi…
