Cypress Street’s Beer Geek Tuesday 3/23

It’s Tuesday again, one of 7 great nights for drinking great beer.   Tonight at Cypress Street, Terrapin Brewing (Athens, Ga) is the featured brewer.  I’ve already mentioned the cask – Terrapin Hopsecutioner w/ whiskey chips.  The Capt’n will be making an appearance too.    Here’s your rundown.

CASK – Hopsecutioner. American IPA, 7.2% ABV.  Newest full time offering by Terrapin, and only the 2nd distributed IPA in the Atlanta market.  The brewers at Terrapin soaked American oak chips in Woodford Reserve Kentucky Bourbon, then added those chips to the cask.  Woodford Reserve is very bold, and presents very well on the palette.  Looking forward to this one.

Capt’n Krunkles – IPA, 7.5% ABV.  Newest Side Project release by Terrapin – #10.  Unofficially a black IPA, Krunkles is a hoppy IPA with dark roasty malts.  Hops include – Warrior, Columbus, Nugget, Centennial, Simcoe.  Dry Hopped w/ Ahtanum.  Malts – 2 Row Pale, Dark Munich, Crystal 24, DH Carafa III.  I think you’re in for a pleasant surprise.

Rye Squared – Imperial IPA, 8.5% ABV.  Part of Terrapin’s Monster Beer Tour, limited seasonal release.  Lots of strong aromatic & bittering hops. Hops include – Magnum, Fuggle, East Kent, Golding, Cascade, Amarillo (Dry Hop.)  Released in February.  Balanced, clean, cellars well.

All beers tap tonight at 7pm! Come hear Cypress Street brag about their People’s Choice Cask win at Sweetwater’s Brew Your Cask Off on Saturday! Congratulations again!

CASK ALERT! Terrapin SP#10 Release Party Tonight!

UPDATE! DATE CHANGE!! Just as soon as I post and in depth look at this coming release, I have official word of the release party  for Capt’n Krunkles!  On Thursday March 11th, be at Brickstore Pub for a special cask of the Capt’n to celebrate its release!  This cask is aged in oak.  Tapping will be at 5pm sharp!

It’s March, and its almost time to see Terrapin Brewing’s newest Side Project beer — Capt’n Krunkles.  The best description of Krunkles would be calling it a “black IPA,” an unofficial beer style that is rapidly becoming popular.

Capt’n Krunkles is in the tanks at the brewery, almost ready for bottling.  This black IPA is brewed just like a regular lPA, but with a small difference — dark malts.  Black IPA’s pour black as if to give the impression of a porter or stout, but taste as hoppy as any IPA you may have tried.  The Capt’n  is full of dark malts, and has over 2 lbs. of hops per barrel.  Here is a closer look at the ingredients in Krunkles —

Hops — Warrior, Columbus, Nugget, Centennial, Simcoe.  Dry Hopped w/ Ahtanum.

Malts — 2 Row Pale, Dark Munich, Crystal 24, DH Carafa III

ABV — 7.5%

From the bottle —

Legend has it Capt’n Krunkles is the most feared pirate on the high seas.  No one who has seen him, his ship, or his band of pirates drinks has ever lived to tell able it.  Made with a bombardment of hops to defeat your taste buds in the battle and all the black malt you can stand before walking the plank, this Black I.P.A. will make it worth going down with the ship.  Capt’n Krunkles… Where is he?  I don’t know… I don’t know!

Availability — Limited one time release, in 22 oz bottles, 1/6 barrels, ½ barrels.

Release — March, in the next few weeks.  Updates to follow. CASK 3/11 @ Brickstore Pub

Terrapin’s GA Theatre Sessions – Vol 1.

Alongside the Capt’n Krunkles release this month is the 1st of  4 beers benefiting the Georgia Theatre rebuild in Athens, GA.

The Brew 1 — March — “The Iron Tankard” Old Stock Ale — The building started as a YMCA in 1889 and had a huge iron swimming pool in the basement.

From Spike: Iron Tankard “Old Stock Ale” is the first of four beers in Terrapin’s Georgia Theatre Sessions. It is brewed with a generous portion of crystal malts for a full body and is lightly hopped. This malt forward beer has flavors of dark dried fruit, mellow alcoholic warmth and is unfiltered for your listening pleasure.

A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Georgia Historic Trust for Historic Preservation Fund to rebuild the Georgia Theater. To make things even more interesting, there is one Golden Ticket hidden among each of the Georgia Theater Sessions brews. This means that four lucky winners will receive a lifetime pass to the new Theater.

I hope that you are the lucky winner!

Cheers! – Spike

Malts: 2-row pale, Munich II, Crystal 65, Crystal 85, Special B

RARE BEER ALERT! Terrapin 30 Strong

Correction! – This is a keg, not a cask.

You’ll have to excuse the lack of updates over the weekend.  I think I spent more time drinking beer than writing about it.

Coming today is a rare keg from Terrapin Brewing.  30 Strong as it’s named, was brewed going on a year ago for Taco Mac in celebration of it’s 30th anniversary.  30 Strong is a strong ale brewer Spike Buchowski designed with 30 ingredients including malts and hops.  I’m trying to dig up the list of 30 ingredients, but for know be excited there is one more of these kegs in existence.

This keg is tapping at Taco Mac Crabapple as a kickoff to their 10 year anniversary week.  This is the first of a few beer related events going on this week at that location.  The keg taps when the store opens today March 1st, not at 5 or 6 like many others do.   30 Strong  is one of many things going on this week so be sure an check back!  Happy March!

Now Tapping @ Beer Geek Tuesday

Tonight, in addition to the French Broad Wee Heavy-er Cask at Cypress Street will be 3 beers recently released.  In now particular order –

Sweetwater’s BSP Quad – Belgian Quadtruple, 11% ABV.  American interpretation of the Belgian Quad style.  This strong beer has a lot going on, including hops and brett yeast.  Some sweet with dark fruits.  While 11%, it doesn’t really taste that way.  Limited release from the Dank Tank.

Terrapin Rye Squared – DIPA, 8.5% ABV.  Note citrus hops, malts, sweet tones in this season offering from Terrapin.  Rye add some spice and pulls it all together.  Seasonal release.

Dogfish Head Black & Blue – Fruit Beer, 11% ABV.  Belgian golden ale w/ pureed blackberries and blueberries.  Flavor seems to meld seemlessly w/ the golden ale.  Not often found on draft. Limited release.

Also, don’t forget the French Broad Cask! All tapping as a part of Beer Geek Tuesday’s at Cypress Street in Midtown.  While there, make sure you geek out with beer manager Wes Anderson.  It all starts at 7 pm tonight!

Monk’s Revenge joins Terrapin’s Seasonal Releases

Terrapin’s Monk Revenge debuted about a year ago as a part of the Side Project series.  Monk’s Revenge was Belgian style Double IPA.  Belgian double IPA’s are essentially DIPA’s with a Belgian yeast, instead of a conventional ale yeast.  With Belgian IPA’s you the hoppy flair of an IPA, but with a flavors of a Belgian you have come to know.

If you missed Monk’s Revenge in the 22oz bomber bottles you will have a chance again soon — and 1 time each year.   Monk’s has been added to Terrapin’s Monster Beer Tour, a seasonal series of Terrapin’s Big Brews. ( Includes Wake & Bake, Big Hoppy  Monster, Rye Squared, to name a few.)

Monk’s Revenge is brewed with a malt bill like a Belgian Tripel, but with the hop content of an IPA.  The Belgian yeast comes from one of the 7 Trappist breweries.  Monk’s Revenge also uses dextrose, an adjuct was used to force carbonate Monk’s , and is the first time brewer Spike Buckowski has ever used it.

Ingredients —

Hops — Magnum, Columbus, Chinook, Centennial, Amarillo, Cascade, Simcoe

Malts — 2 Row, Pilsner, Munich Light, Aroma, Pale Crystal, Acidulated

9.8% ABV

99 IBU’s

Next up in the Monster Beer Tour is Rye Squared, slated for shelves this week.  After Rye Squared  – expected is Monk’s Revenge aka the “Big Nasty” by Terrapin insiders.  (It’s a loving term, Monk’s is quite tasty.)  Actual dates coming soon.

Unibroue — Based out of Chambly, Quebec. Beers are bottle refermented with a process similar to champagne.  Popular beers include –  Blanche De Chambly, La Fin Du Monde, Maudite.  Various offerings by Unibroue featured.
