Terrapin & Cigar City Create “Southern Slice”

Recently, Terrapin Beer Company’s “Spike” went down to Cigar Cigar Brewing in Tampa to collaborate. If you know anything at all about these two breweries, neither strays away from creativity.

That’s how Southern Slice got started. The group wanted to capture the taste and flair of a southern staple, pecan pie. After deciding to use a dark lager as a base, vanilla beans and pecans were give the beer a pie like flavor.

Southern Slice will be packaged in 750ml bottles.

Style: Dunkel Lager (w/ Vanilla Beans, Pecans)
Availability: 750ml bottles

The Walking Dead Craft Beer Mega Gallery [PICS]

Tonight’s Season Four premiere of AMC’s The Walking Dead featured a fight scene full of craft beer.  SweetWater Brewing, Terrapin Beer Co and Jailhouse Brewing had cameos. You also see Decatur’s Ale Yeah! banner in a scene. (Slightly obscured by the Jailhouse sign.)

This hit show is filmed in and around Atlanta, Georgia. The Walking Dead’s set designers often reach out to local brewers asking for beer, signage and boxes to be used as props for filming.

Over the summer, Glen Golden of Jailhouse Brewing in Hampton, Georgia mentioned the show took bottles and signs to use in the upcoming season. Until tonight’s premiere, Glen wasn’t sure if they made it in any of the shots.

You could argue the walkers were just dropping in for the local brews, and not the healthy folks. Just a thought.

Terrapin’s “Spike” Loves Him Some Collaborations

I’m starting to think that Terrapin Beer Co’s (Athens, GA) “Spike” is the collab-iest MF’er in the craft beer game. Don’t believe me? Let’s review.

Over the past few weeks, he has brewed a Tennessee/Georgia/Water/Football rivalry in Knoxville at SawWorks.

Then he brewed another Georgia/Florida collaboration with Swamp Head in Gainesville.

Another round of the Shmaltz/Terrapin Beer For Hope is hitting shelves soon too. (Coffee & Chocolate anyone?)

We aren’t even close to done yet. Spike has also done collaborations with Thornbridge (England), New Holland (Social Potion, 2012),  Brasserie Franches Montagnes (Spike & Jerome’s Barley Ryne), Boundary Bay (released in New Zealand), The Georgia Brewer’s Guild, Nogne-O (Rye Porter), Multiple editions of the Midnight Project with Left Hand Brewing, and The Georgia Theater (kind of)

Today, he’s brewing in Faversham, in southeast London, England at Shepard Neame. Britain’s oldest brewery, founded in 1698. He’s brewing Terrapin’s Tree Hugger there.

Needless to say, he gets around. Below, Spike talks about his newest release.

Terrapin Shows Off a Southern Original

On the eve of the first Beer Street Journal party celebrating southern beer culture, Terrapin Beer Co (Athens, GA) makes a small change. You’ll see The South’s Original added to it.

Terrapin has been brewing this rye pale for over a decade. Plus, if you want my opinion on this – the west coast does IPA. The south does rye. Well. That’s a southern original.

Rye Pale Ale is available year round.

Georgia Florida Rivalry Gets A Beer Too

More SEC Football rivalry. Terrapin Beer Company’s “Spike” is in Florida today brewing a beer with Swamp Head (Gainesville) on a new collaboration called Bitter Rivalry. If you know nothing of the rivalry that is the Florida Gators and Georgia Bulldogs, it’s… huge.

The two teams can’t play at their own stadiums. They have to play on neutral ground in Jacksonville, Florida. “The Landing” in Jacksonville becomes the worlds largest outdoor cocktail party (more like, biggest outdoor $hit talking/drunk fest) in America. Trust me, I’ve been.

The rivalry heats up today with this new collaboration. Swamp Head is teasing details, but haven’t commented on the style. There are oranges involved, we know this much.

The Georgia/Florida game this year is November 2. There will be release parties and activities around this beer closer to the bloodbath. Oh, and by the way this isn’t Spike’s first SEC rivalry brew this year. In August he went to Knoxville, Tennessee (that’s UT territory) to brew another rivalry brew.
