COMING SOON: Southern Tier Pumking

I’ve probably said this before, but Southern Tier really has become one of my favorite breweries.  Even more exciting is that Southern Tier’s Imperial Pumking beer is coming to Atlanta.  Now it’s just my opinion, but Pumking is one of my favorite pumpkin beers on the east coast.  This beer is actually made with real pureed pumpkin.  Ingredients:

Hops: Sterling, Magnum

Malts: 2 Row Pale, Caramel,

Pureed Pumpkin

From the label:

“Pumking is an ode to Púca, a creature of Celtic folklore, who is both feared and respected by those who believe in it. Púca is said to waylay travelers throughout the night, tossing them on its back, and providing them the ride of their lives, from whichthey return forever changed! Brewed in the spirit of All Hallows Eve, a time of year when spirits can make contact with the physical world and when magic is most potent. Pour Pumking into a goblet and allow it’s alluring spirit to overflow. As spicy aromas present themselves, let its deep copper color entrance you as your journey into this mystical brew has just begun. As the first drops touch your tongue a magical spell will bewitch your taste buds making it difficult to escape. This beer is brewed with pagan spirit yet should be enjoyed responsibly.”

Pale Ale is brewed with 2 varieties of hops and 2 types of malts. Brewer’s description –

“Our Pale is an aggressively hopped, with immense overtones of grapefruit and tangerine wrapped in a delicately refined body of pale barley and wheat.”

NEW RELEASE: Southern Tier Farmer’s Tan

Shipping with Creme Brulee from Southern Tier is Farmer’s Tan.  Farmer’s is an imperial pale lager.  The name is a testament to the farmers that make the ingredients for the beers we love.  As Southern Tier so elegantly describes –

“Neolithic humans evolved from nomadic hunters into a more settled agricultural society, changing life forever. The ‘founder’ crops they raised included wheat & barley. It is little surprise that the first examples of brewing appeared during this age.

Brewers owe much to that epoch. Similarly, we thank our farmer friends of today for cultivating the ingredients that are responsible for the beers we now enjoy. Their laborious days spent outdoors under the hot sun earn them respect, as well as a mark of distinction: the farmer’s tan. Yes, the inevitable red & white hallmark of hard work.

So, roll up your sleeves and turn the soil. Just be sure to chill a bottle of Farmer’s Tan to enjoy after work.”

Ingredients –

Hops: Kettle – Magnum, Mt. Hood  Aroma – Santium, Sterling, Mt Hood

Malts: 2 Row Pale, European Pilsner Malt, white wheat

Taste Expectations: Bready malt, citrus and grass hops.  Pilsner malts shine in the end with some alcohol to round it out.  Has some pilsner characteristics, but bigger and bolder

Southern Tier Creme Brulee Arrives Today

Creme Brulee hopefully has your mouth watering.  It’s an imperial stout, with dessert lie qualities.  You want dessert stouts? Southern Tier makes them! Mokah, Choklot (coming soon) and Brulee.  Let’s look at this beer.

Creme Brulee is a part of the Blackwater Series by Southern Tier.  Creme Brulee is an imperial stout with vanilla beans.  Brewers description –

“We are not the harbingers of truth as some may suggest but it may indeed be argued that our brewing philosophy is tantamount to a dessert with a bellicose past. How, you may ask, would a brewery determine a likeness to hard-coated custard? Our response is simple; it’s all in the power of history, and of course, the extra finesse needed to top off a contentious treat with definition.

By comprehending the labyrinthine movement of time, one would not think it strange to trace the errant path of an ordinary object such as a cream dessert only to discover that it has been the cause of cultural disputes since the middle ages. The British founders of burnt cream and from Spain, crema catalana, both stand by their creative originality and we respect that, but it was the French Crème Brûlée, amid the strife of contention, that survived to represent our deliciously creamy brew.”

Ingredients –

Hops: Columbus, Horizon.

Malts: 2 Row Malt, Dark Caramel Malt

Adjuncts: Lactose Sugar

Taste Expectations: Vanilla, caramel in both nose and taste.  It’s creamy, with a beautiful dessert/cake nose.  Mokah has an amazing chocolate nose, this is just as good if not better.  It’s sweet, with some booze.

10% ABV

NEW RELEASE: Southern Tier Mokah

Southern Tier blew into town a few weeks ago.  Mostly bomber offerings, but there were a few 6 pack offerings.  Another bomber offering just emerged – Mokah.  Mokah is an imperial stout from the Lakewood, NY brewer.

Mokah is a part of the Blackwater series of imperial stouts by Southern Tier.  This brew is a 50/50 blend of Jah-va (coffee stout) and Choklat (chocolate stout.)  Choklat hasn’t made it to Georgia yet.

From the label  –

“When empirical and creative impulses collide, the result is often timeless. The classic utility-art aesthetic of the coffee maker is an example of design and engineering working in concert.
It is through similar cooperation that the simple bitter cocoa bean is transformed into a sweet treat. As scientists, our brewers utilize their materials to exacting standards. As artists, they couldn’t resist the temptation to combine two of our highly acclaimed Blackwater Series Imperial Stouts: Jahva and Choklat. Alone each is perfect, but together as Mokah they are an inimitable expression of two of the world’s most sought after flavors. Enjoy Mokah stout with — or as — your favorite dessert!”

Ingredients –

Hops – Chinook, Willamette, Cascade & Columbus

Malts – 2 Row Pale, 2 Row Barley, Caramel, Chocolate & Black Malts, Roasted Barley, Barley flakes

Other – Belgian chocolate

Availability – Mid Spring seasonal. 22oz Bottles.  1/6 Keg draft.

11% ABV

6/8 – Just arrived at Hop City.

6/11 – Green’s on Ponce has Mokah.  Not many cases in Georgia.  Snag it now!

Southern Tier Brewing Arrives

4/27 – Southern Tier has officially arrived in Atlanta.  Southern Tier hails from Lakewood, New York.  and been in business since 2002.  13 titles arrive with the launch.  Hop City just received 85 cases!! Biggest launch Kraig Torres has seen. See  below for the 13 Launch titles.

Southern Tier was founded by Phineas De Mink and Allen “Skip” Yahn with a vision of small batch brewing.  They purchased equipment from Old Saddleback Brewing Co in Pittsfield, Massachusetts when they unfortunately folded, and set up shop in Lakewood, New York.  By February 2003, Southern Tier was being distributed locally.  By 2005, all of New York state and eastern Pennsylvania.   Southern Tier admits their first few “flagship” beers were a failure.  Namely a pilsner, and a British mild.  The star of the show was the IPA.

The brewery has seen much success in recent years — now producing about 18,000 barrels of beer a year.  This success allowed Southern Tier to add a building to increase production in 2009.

The full time lineup looks like this —

IPA – 6.9% ABV.  Essentially the beer that made the brewery.  It’s an American IPA. AKA — The iso-alpha acid experience

Phin & Matts Extraordinary Ale — American Pale, 5.4% ABV.  Lots of whole flower hops, malted barley, crystal filtered water.  Nice hoppy pale.

Porter — American Porter, 5.6% ABV.  Darkest offering by ST.  Complex, with chocolate and espresso tones.  Subtle hop flavors- especially in finish.

Raspberry Wheat — American Pale Wheat, 4.6% ABV.  A good fruity summer session wheat beer.  Malted barley & wheat.  Lightly hopped with American hops, with raspberries added.

422 Pale Wheat Ale — American Pale Wheat Ale, 5.8% ABV.  Unfiltered.  Hints of orange and sweet malts.  Tribute to responsible earth practices. Packaged w/ recycled materials etc.  Wheat, barley, hops play big roles in 422.

UnEarthly IPA – Imperial IPA, 9.8% ABV.  Imperial IPA with huge hop bill.  Southern Tier describes it as aggressive.

Big Red – Imperial Red Ale, 9.5% ABV.  Single hopped w/ Hallertau. Spicy. Malty with sweet undertones.

Hoppe Imperial Extra Pale Ale – 8.3% ABV.  Brewed simply with water, barley, wheat, yeast, and hops.  Minimalist approach to a complex taste.

Iniquity Imperial Black Ale – 8.9% ABV.  Called the “Antithesis of Unearthly,” this is a hoppy black ale, much like a black IPA.

Jah*va Imperial Coffee Stout – 10.4%.   Brewed with Arabica beans from the mountains of Jamaica.  lots of coffee in this stout.  Heavy hitter.

Gemini Imperial Blended Ale – 9% ABV.  A blend of unearthly IPA and unfiltered Hoppe  Named for the constellation Gemini – The Twins.  Reference implied.

Oaked Aged Unearthly – Oaked Imperial IPA, 9.5% ABV.  Oaked Aged version of their Imperial IPA.  Enough said.  Drink this beer.

Hop Sun — American Pale Wheat, 4.9% ABV.  Sessionable summer wheat ale.  Dry hopped pale ale with flavors of wheat, barley, and hops.  Lemon zest and sweet malts also find their way in. Refreshing

Fall:

Pumking Imperial Pumpkin Ale — Pumpkin Ale, 7.9% ABV.  Regarded and one of the best pumpkin ales.  Contains pureed pumpkin, lots of caramel malts.  Spicy, flavorful, and delicious.

Fun Fact: Southern Tier is not only sold in the US.  It has made its way to Japan, Philippines, Singapore, Denmark, Australia, and Canada.
