Designed like a sports drink: Harpoon Rec League

2019 looks to be the year craft breweries focus on few calories, few carbohydrates, and lower alcohol by volume. Harpoon Rec League is another example of this growing field of healthier options.

This new health-conscious beer is brewed with buckwheat kasha for B vitamins, fiber, antioxidants, and Omega 3 heavy chia seeds and sea salt for electrolytes. It already sounds like a sports drink instead of a beer.

Rec League is just 120 calories per 12-ounce serving and 3.8% alcohol by volume is designed for folks with active lifestyles.

“Fans of Harpoon do more than drink beer – they’re running road races, working out with friends, and hitting the slopes. We wanted to make a beer that celebrates and complements this active lifestyle.” Tom Graham, Innovation Brewer

Harpoon Rec League is available nationally in both 16-ounce cans and 15-pack 12-ounce cans starting in February 2019.

Style: Pale Ale (w/ Buckwheat. Chia Seeds. Sea Salt.)

Coronado Leisure Lagoon Hazy Pale Ale

Coronado Leisure Lagoon Hazy Pale Ale hits the brewery’s distribution network this week.

This hazy new pale ale is a blend of the best aspects of East Coast and West Coast pale ales and brewed with West coast hops. Using London III yeast, Coronado touts Leisure Lagoon pale ale as a brighter and juicier than a typical west coast pale ale.

“We spent a lot of time experimenting with different hop profiles and alcohol percentages,” says Steele. “At the end of the day, this is the beer that we all want to drink. It’s got the classic piney, dank, citrus hop character, with more fruitiness and softer mouthfeel from the yeast. We’re stoked with how it turned out and we think our fans will love it, too. It’s perfectly crushable.”

16-ounce cans of Coronado Leisure Lagoon debuted February 15th all brewery locations, hitting full distribution this week.

Style: Hazy Pale Ale
Availability: 16oz Cans, Draft.
Debut: 2/15/19

5.5% ABV

Cocoa and vanilla are the stars in Second Self Bleeding Heart, plus strawberries – new for 2019. A beer inspired by southern-style red velvet cake.

  • Bitter Heart – Red Ale, extensively dry hopped. Extra hoppy, extra bitter. The real Valentine’s Day beer.

Metallica launches their own beer nationally with Stone Brewing

Arrogant Consortia, Stone Brewing’s “arrogant” extension of their brewing operation, was always destined for a collaboration like this. Stone and Metallica have created a new pilsner rolling out nationally.

Musical collaborations are nothing new in the beer industry. Dogfish Head has created several musical releases with Pearl Jam, Guided By Voices, and The Flaming Lips. Dropkick Murphys teamed up with Magic Hat and Megadeth with Unibroue – that’s just the beginning of the list. Now musical hall of fame inducted Metallica has their own national release- Enter Night Pilsner.

Iron Maiden has their own successful beer and Metallica has taken notice. After launching “Blackened,” a Metallica inspired whiskey last fall, beer was an obvious next step. According to drummer Lars Ulrich, Stone Brewing’s name kept coming up while doing some research. Beer fans know how fiercely independent Stone is, and Metallica was drawn to Greg Koch and Stone for that mentality.

Metallica didn’t want to just “slap a label” on a beer, and Koch wasn’t about to do the brewer’s version of the same thing. The band dove head first together into the creation of this collaboration – Enter Night Pilsner.

Now, a lot of folks think a metal-inspired beer should be strong, black, barrel-aged, or be brewed with goat’s blood or something “metal” like that. Most musicians want something on the lighter side of the spectrum to drink before, during, and after the show. The guitar solo on “One” wouldn’t as epic if Kirk Hammett was shit-blitzed on barleywine. A pilsner became a perfect choice (plus Ulrich is from Europe originally and knows the style well).

Enter Night Pilsner is every bit a clean, crisp European style lager with just a touch of aggressive American hops. When Stone Brewing and Metallica say this beer “transcends genres, shatters preconceptions and challenges convention,” we tend to agree. They both have done that in their perspective industries and definitely in this beer. Enter Night is not like any pilsner you’ve had before.

Enter Night Pilsner is hitting shelves nationally in 16-ounce cans.

Crank The Black Album and get drinking.

Style: Pilsner
Availability: 16oz Cans, Draft.
Debut (Nationally): Early 2019

5.7% ABV, 45 IBUs

Peppers & Bourbon: Birdsong Turtles on Pterodactyls returns on Valentine’s

Birdsong Turtles on Pterodactyls,  a small batch release series returns to spotlight on Valentine’s Day.

Truly a beer name you won’t forget, with a flavor you won’t forget, Turtles on Pterodactyls is first and foremost in imperial stout aged in bourbon barrels. Birdsong has added cinnamon, coffee from Central Coffee Company, cocoa nibs, and serrano peppers into the recipe.

One day, friendly Dino turtles were caught in a volcanic corruption – the dangers time to be slow and steady. Fortunately, the vigilant Pterodactyl Rescue Squad noticed just in time! The dactyls swoops down with a thunderous call! And hitched the turtles to the rescue vests. Hot lava covered the earth but the turtle dudes were safe and sound. Want to be a pterodactyl?
