New Belgium Fresh Hop & Prickly Passion Round Out 2011
New Belgium Brewing rounds out their 2011 Lips of Faith series with these 2 new releases: Fresh Hop India Pale Ale and Prickly Passion Saison. These releases follow the recent and very popular Clutch and Kick Lips Of Faith releases.
Fresh Hop India Pale Ale – IPA, 7% ABV, 70 IBUs. Packs a citrus punch of Amarillo, Centennial and Cascade hops, straight off the vine in Washington State. This brazen and deliciously bitter IPA pours deeply golden with the slight haze of a really hoppy beer. The array of hops gives a sharp blast, but the finish is light and dry.
Prickly Passion Saison – Saison, 8.5% ABV. In a fruit medley of passion fruit and prickly pear, Prickly Passion Saison is New Belgium’s return to farmhouse ales. The fruit juices combine with the tropical esters of an earthy Saison yeast, creating a broad and reaching mango-like character. Deemed “ostentatiously amber,” this Lips selection is guaranteed to provoke the palate.
Hops: Target, Liberty Malts: Pale, C-80 Fruits: Prickly Pear, Passionfruit
“We opted not to make our fourth quarter Lips selections exceptionally wintery or heavy,” said New Belgium brewer Grady Hull. “Instead, we are hosting a hops harvest party and bringing uncommon fruit selections to the table, both of which sparkle with holiday flavor.”What? No stouts? It’s wintertime!
Availability: 22oz bombers, November-February.

It’s no secret that New Belgium Brewing will be launching 16oz “tallboy” cans soon. Shift Pale Lager, will be one of those cans. As mentioned in my recent visit to New Belgium in October, these cans will come off the line sometime in early 2012.
With the new canning line, the brewery will be able to add more canning capacity, while making 12oz & 16oz editions. States/markets that don’t currently see New Belgium’s can lineup will see them one it is in place. The brewery currently cans Fat Tire, Mothership Wit, and Ranger IPA.
New Belgium Brewing’s Frambozen is hitting the shelves again for another holiday go-round.
Frambozen means raspberries in Flemish, as the beer is inspired by Belgian Framboises (that use more berries than hops.) Raspberries are freshly picked in the pacific northwest, pressed into juice on site, then loaded into oxygen-free CO2 headed for the brewery. “Frambozen is one of our staple holiday releases because it’s absolutely perfect with many of the traditional meals served this time of year,” said Grady Hull, Assistant Brewmaster at New Belgium Brewing. “Additionally, it is a gorgeous color, has a fun tale about its creation and even makes a great stocking stuffer.”
Style: Fruit beer Taste Expectations: Raspberries, caramel, chocolate. Creamy, with a slight floral hop flavor. Availability: 12oz bottles, draft
Grab A Shovel, New Belgium Dig Replacing Mighty Arrow
A quick call to the local New Belgium rep wrapped this one up quickly. New Belgium’s Dig will be replacing Mighty Arrow in the spring. The brewery puts about a 2 year lifespan on seasonals before switching it up a bit. Dig is a variation on a pale ale, with a different hop profile.
Unearth your bottle-opener because this Pale Ale is something you can Dig. Sorachi Ace hops provides a fresh Spring zing with incredible lemon aroma. Nelson Sauvin is next in line with bursts of passion fruit, mango, and peach. American favorites, Cascade and Centennial round out this crisp, clean Pale Ale. Dig In!

New Belgium Brewing lost about a day of production due to the fire yesterday.
What happened?
The fire broke out around 12 noon. There is a spent grain silo that is scheduled for removal and replacement. They suspect that a worker using a blowtorch on the silo sparked the fire. It was extinguished in about 30 minutes without injury. Some production time was lost, as they shut down the HVAC system to prevent smoke from entering the brewery. No other brewery damage occurred. New Belgium’s Second Annual Clips of Faith Beer & Film Tour
Raised Nearly $59,000 for Nonprofits Around the Country
11,000 Attendees Gathered for Outdoor Films and Beer Tastings
Ft. Collins, CO, November 7, 2011 —Clips of Faith, New Belgium Brewing’s traveling philanthropic beer and film festival, recently wrapped up a record-shattering(!) 18-city tour. The second-year festival outperformed last year, bringing out 11,000 people in cities across the U.S. for amateur short films,
New Belgium’s esoteric Lips of Faith beers (http://www.newbelgium.com/beer) and food from local vendors. In total, Clips of Faith raised almost $59,000 for local non-profits (see how your city did below). Over its two-year run, Clips of Faith has raised approximately $91,000.
At each Clips of Faith stop, all proceeds from beer sales benefitted local, sustainably focused nonprofit partners. Attendees help support local organizations while sampling hard-to-find New Belgium beers beneath the stars. Eighteen of the best Clips of Faith short film entries screen at every show. In addition, each event had a zero waste component, diverting, on average, 91 percent of the waste from landfills and encouraging alternative transportation.
“There is something extraordinary about bringing out a community to support the arts and their local nonprofit organizations,” said Christie Catania, Clips of Faith Manager-at-Large. “Watching inspired short films and sipping beer under the stars is a great way to spend a summer evening. This tour grew exponentially from last year, showing that people enjoy the concept as much as we do.”
The creative team at New Belgium Brewing reviewed and selected the films that went on tour and picked three filmmakers to visit New Belgium for the Ft. Collins screening. Those honorees were “Bottles” by Colorado resident Geoff Maddaford; “Tiny Day in Jackson Hole Backcountry” by Wyoming’s Tristan Greszko; and “Assisted Migration” by Dusan Harminc of Wisconsin. Honorable Mentions were: “BLOB,” Trevor Hawkins, Missouri; “The Millionaires Club,” Sam Nuttmann, Washington; and “Ski and Chalk,” Chris Dickey, Wyoming.
If you are a filmmaker, or an aspiring filmmaker, and would like to be part of New Belgium’s 2012 Clips of Faith tour, entries are now being accepted at www.clipsoffaith.com. To take a look at some of the winning films from 2011, visit www.clipsoffaith.com.
