Beer Speaks, Lagunitas Sucks

Lagunitas says they suck.  Why?  Production and cost.  We mentioned last week that Lagunitas will NOT be making Brown Shugga’ this year.  This expensive to produce beer shorted the brewery 3 cases of their daily/year round offerings.   The beer Continue Reading →

Lagunitas’ New Brewhouse Hits High Seas, Destroyed

According to the Lagunitas Twitter feed, the new 250bbl brewhouse was in route to Panama when it ran into a storm and high seas.  As the ship rolled a crane came loose.  The result?  See above.  The tank is a total loss.

The beer is sold to you the drinkers at a far discounted price, hitting Lagunitas up for a loss.  The decision for 2011? NO SOUP FOR YOU.

This is ale is Lagunitas’ Mea Culpa of sorts- Lagunitas Sucks Holiday Ale Brown Shugga’ Substitute.Label:

This sad holiday season we didn’t have the brewing capacity to make our favorite seasonal brew, the widely feared Brown Shugga’ Ale. We’re just out of capacity.  There is nothing cool about screwing up this badly and we know it.

What’s the beer?
This beer is a ‘Cereal Medley’ of Barley, Rye, Wheat, and Oats…Full of complexishness from the four grains, and weighing in at 7.6% abv, Then joyously dry-hopped for that big resinous hop flavor.”

Style: Brown Ale ?
Availability: 12oz bottles, Draft
Arrival: November, 2011

No Shugga’ from Lagunitas this holiday season

at least for this  year…  Lagunitas had to cut Brown Shugga’ from it’s lineup this year.  But don’t you worry Shugga’ lovers, it’s only for this year.  Brown Shugga’ is a more expensive beer to produce and has been coming to all of you at a far to discounted price, so for this year, it will not be produced so that Lagunitas can catch up.  For every case of Shugga‘ brewed, they were short 3 cases of their daily beers.

Lagunitas also stated that they will only be producing 50% as much Hairy Eyeball and they will not make anymore Gnarleywine until their new brewhouse is online sometime around late January.  Brown Shugga’ will be produced again next holiday season with the  new brewhouse up and running.

After Slight Delay, Lagunitas Bavarian Doppel Hits

Lagunitas Brewing’s first brew on their new equipment was slightly delayed (originally due out in June, 2011.)
Lagunitas invited Rolec, the fabricators of the new equipment to brew on their creation.  The brewhouse was designed by Freistant Bayern Brothers.

In far-away 2006, in a beer hall in Philly, at the end of a long road, we shared our first beer with a Friestat Bayern Brewer enharmonically named Wolfgang. At stake, over a Prima Pils, was whether or not Lagunitas would purchase from him a new 80bbl brewhouse. It was a lot of money. Playing Silenus to my Brewery’s chariot, together- with the benefit of the Pils- we forded the emotional-economic crevasse and commissioned the brewhouse. Unforseeable at the time would be the need for even more brewing capacity today in extra-local 2011. So, for the sixth time in our short history, we lurch down that increasingly familiar road towards a new 250 barrel brewhouse. The actual installation, beginning in November, will bear a stong resemblance to a heart transplant, on an awake patient, performed on the backside of a galloping horse, or at very least in tow behind Dionysus’ trustworthy Silenus. Some is good, more is better. The good new is; it’s still us!

Style: Weizenbock

Taste Expectations: Light banana, clove.  Wheat, caramel, creamy. (Think Sierra Nevada Beer Camp Release)

Availability: 22oz bombers,  some draft.

Lagunitas Brewing is releasing an anniversary edition of Lucky 13 dubbed Lucky 13.Alt. Pay close attention, that .alt, NOT an altbier.  Actually this has nothing to do with an altbier at all, so save yourself some embarrassment of rating badly because it say alt on the label.  If you don’t know the alt reference in regards to the web – google “usenet.”  Back to the beer- Lucky 13 is an imperial red ale, and 13.alt will be a strong ale.

Label:
From the first day of the first mash of the first recipe in the first brewhouse in the first space to this oasis 13 years on the road; We have worked hard to walk in the footsteps of our hero brewers- The Noble Brewer of the planet’s only legal Steam Beer, and Oregon’s Rebel Brewer from Newport. Thirteen years down the road, we have found our own voice as brewers but our admiration for the Great Ones has not dimmed one bit. If we walked well down the hero’s path ourselves, perhaps we too have been an inspiration for others. Beer is a Bronze Age business and we feel honored to have left our footprints on it’s path into history, at the same time leaving our flavors on your buds. Thanks for your trust over the years and we hope you enjoy this specialty brewed Hi-Gravity Auburn offering.  Beer Speaks!  People Mumble
