Cypress Street’s Beer Geek Lineup – 3/9

There are a lot of great things coming up for Cypress Street’s Beer Geek Tuesdays. I can’t wait to start talking about them.  Tomorrow – Dogfish Head Brewery is the featured brewery – with food to compliment.

Cypress Street just got a new chef in the kitchen, and beer manager Wes Anderson wants to show him off.  Tomorrow night will feature 3 offerings from Dogfish Head with food pairings.   The beers are –

Midas Touch – Spice Beer, 9% ABV.  Recipe is based off the oldest known fermented beverage in the world.  It’s a Turkish recipe found on drinking vessels  from the 2700 year old tomb of King Midas.  A mixture of what could be a wine & a mead.  Grapes, honey, juice and malt are present.  Offered year round.

Pangea – Belgian Strong Pale, 7%.  Pangea is brewed with ingredients from every continent. Crystallized ginger from Australia, Basmati rice from Asia, Muscavado sugar from Africa, Quinoa from South America, North American Maize, even water from Antarctica.  Released in the fall in 750 ml bottles.

Burton Baton – Double IPA, 10% ABV.  Burton is a blend of an English Strong Ale aged in Oak, and DFH’s 90 Minute IPA.  Oakey vanilla is prevalent, with the northwestern citrus hops found in 90 Min.  Limited release.

Each of these beers will have a food pairing – $25 dollars for all three. Not a bad deal honestly, as Pangea retails for $10+ dollars a bottle alone.

Starts at 7pm!

Now Tapping @ Beer Geek Tuesday

Tonight, in addition to the French Broad Wee Heavy-er Cask at Cypress Street will be 3 beers recently released.  In now particular order –

Sweetwater’s BSP Quad – Belgian Quadtruple, 11% ABV.  American interpretation of the Belgian Quad style.  This strong beer has a lot going on, including hops and brett yeast.  Some sweet with dark fruits.  While 11%, it doesn’t really taste that way.  Limited release from the Dank Tank.

Terrapin Rye Squared – DIPA, 8.5% ABV.  Note citrus hops, malts, sweet tones in this season offering from Terrapin.  Rye add some spice and pulls it all together.  Seasonal release.

Dogfish Head Black & Blue – Fruit Beer, 11% ABV.  Belgian golden ale w/ pureed blackberries and blueberries.  Flavor seems to meld seemlessly w/ the golden ale.  Not often found on draft. Limited release.

Also, don’t forget the French Broad Cask! All tapping as a part of Beer Geek Tuesday’s at Cypress Street in Midtown.  While there, make sure you geek out with beer manager Wes Anderson.  It all starts at 7 pm tonight!

New in bottle – Dogfish Head Chicory Stout

Chicory StoutDogfish Head Chicory Stout is one of the first beers brewed by DFH when it was just a brewpub in 1995.  Back then Sam Calagione (founder/brewer) was brewing on a small 10 gallon system. He had to brew constantly in order to keep the beer flowing at the pub.  Well, Sam got bored one morning,  wandered into the kitchen of the pub and grabbed ingredients.

Coffee was the first things he grabbed (it was the AM) and then chicory to compliment the coffee. Chicory is found in New Orleans coffee blends.  Other ingredients include St. John’s Wort and licorice root.  To quote Sam’s tasting notes — “Putting St. John’s wort in the brew makes this beer nature’s antidepressant depressant.  Drink all you want it cancels itself out. “

It’s a seasonal release in November/December each year.  It’s a great sessionable stout at 5% ABV.

Hop City – 6 pk – 12.49

Tower – ??

Total Wine – Not in Stock yet.

Sierra Nevada/ Dogfish Head Collaboration hits Atlanta

Life and LimbLife and Limb has arrived in Atlanta.  There is a lot to talk about with this particular beer.  First, the basics.  Life and limb is part of a 2 beer collaboration release between Sierra Nevada & Dogfish Head Breweries.  The doctrine behind this brew is to dedicate a release to beer drinkers, and beer lovers who support craft beer worldwide.

Life & Limb is born out a friendship between brewer Ken Grossman of Sierra Nevada, and Sam Calagione of Dogfish Head.  (If you don’t know, Ken Grossman is a pioneer in the craft beer world.  Home brewer turned founder of Sierra Nevada in 1980.)  Many of the accomplishments of Ken have been an inspiration to Sam.  It is out of the friendship and adoration of each other, these beers are born.

The name Life and Limb is an homage to the American breweries that breathed LIFE in the tree of craft brewing, and the ever growing more diverse LIMBS of it.  L&L is a strong ale at 10% ABV with a unique list of ingredients.  In this collaboration, Sierra and Dogfish carefully thought out additions to this brew that reflect each brewhouse.    Estate barley from Sierra Nevada brewery in Chico, California.  Pure maple syrup  from the Calagione farm in Massachusetts.   Also, for the first time in craft beer, birch syrup from Alaska used for natural carbonation.  Yeast strains from both brew houses were combined to make a unique signature.  Life & Limb is made to cellar very well.  Sam Calagione even mentioned it would be great if one day his children and Ken Grossman’s children raised a glass of 2009 Life and Limb at a beer dinner years in the future.

A sister beer to Life & Limb is dubbed Limb and Life.  It is a lighter beer than its companion at 5% ABV.  Limb & Life is produced from left over sugars from the first run.  Throw in some American hops and you have a nice sessionable compliment to Life & Limb.  It is a draft only release, and no word yet on it for Atlanta.

Bottles of Life & Limb are available now @ Hop City.  22 oz — 9.99. (SOLD OUT!!!!!)

Draft opportunities will be posted ASAP.

Taste?  After a small taste of Life & Limb last night, I will leave you with this — there is a lot going on in that glass. So get a bottle and get tasting…
