Dogfish Head’s My Antonia Ships

Dogfish Head Brewing’s (Milton, DE) “My Antonia” is a limited, occasional release.  It’s an imperial pilsner hopped in the special Dogfish method – continually.

Dogfish’s Backstory:
My Antonia started out as a Collaboration beer when Sam brewed it at Birra del Borgo (hope you can read Italian) outside Rome, Italy with owner/brewer Leonardo DiVencenzo in October of 2008. In 2010, we began brewing My Antonia here at Dogfish Head brewery in Delaware for U.S. distribution.

As an aside, in June of 2009, Leonardo came over to Delaware and brewed our original batch of beer with us at our Rehoboth Beach brewpub. And Leo is one of the four brewers who (along with Dogfish, Russian River and Baladin) are involved in the Eataly project in New York City. What goes around, comes around.

Style: Imperial Pilsner

Taste Expectations: Big hop profile. Light pilsner malts. Earthy, touch of lemon.

7.5% ABV

Here is our Quick Sip Clip video of Sam chatting about My Antonia with his Italian-American grandmother Jessie Calagione (they sometimes veer a bit off topic, but we think it’s a great video and love her ‘cash customers’ story) – cheers!

Dogfish Head’s Bitches Brew Returns

Dogfish Head Bitches BrewIt was here and gone in a matter of a day or 2, then featured on Sunday’s Brew Masters program on the Discovery Channel.  The beer I speak about is Bitches Brew, Dogfish Brewing’s (Milton, DE) imperial stout commemorating the 40th anniversary of Miles Davis’s “Bitches Brew”.  If you know Dogfish, you know it’s not just an imperial stout. It’s actually a blend of an imperial stout and honey beer with gesho root.  To help ease a bit of the demand for this beer, the brewery made more.  It hits the shelves today.

Style: Russian Imperial Stout (blended)
Taste Expectations: Roasty.  Coffee, honey, bitter chocolate.  Little malt sweetness. Bold
Availability: 750 ML champagne bottles. Capped. Limited brew.

9% ABV

Brewmasters Series on Discovery Channel

I always said some of Dogfish Brewing (Milton, DE) beers are like beer meets Discovery Channel.  Now, it actually is.  Sam Calgione, founder of Dogfish Head Brewing is hosting a new show on the Discovery Channel.

From the show’s website:
It’s cold, it’s comforting, it’s beer … but for Sam Calagione, founder of one of America’s leading craft brewers Dogfish Head Brewery, beer is a passion, a business and a personal quest for best, most imaginative brews. PremieringSunday, November 21 at 10 PM E/P on Discovery Channel, BREW MASTERS follows Sam and his partners in suds as they travel the country and the world sourcing exotic ingredients and discovering ancient techniques to produce beers of astounding originality.

From chocolate to mussels to tomatoes, Sam is constantly pushing his team and himself to innovate and celebrate the amazing world of beer and beer making. The imagination of the Dogfish Head team is matched only by the fun they inject into every facet of their jobs. Beer tasting meetings in the conference room with co-workers, a bocce ball league in the parking lot, filming original rap videos in the brewery plant, it’s all in a days work for BREW MASTERS.

Running a successful business also requires inspiration, so BREW MASTERS hits the road for the ultimate beer tasting road trip. Sam sets out to recreate “ancient ales” that have been discovered at sites around the world from Egypt to Peru. He travels to Rome to research old world Italian beers as inspiration for a new site in New York with Mario Batali. A visit to New Zealand introduces the idea of making the “first tomato based beer.” And back home, Sam is tasked to come up with a commemorative beer called “Bitches Brew” to celebrate the 40th anniversary release of Miles Davis’ famous recording.

“Beer has always been my passion. It is so much more than what you see in the glass. I’m excited to share the diligence, daring and creativity that we pour into our work,” said Calagione.

Viewing Party!

Head to The Fred Bar on November 21st for a Brewmasters Viewing Party! Starts at 7:30 and runs until the show ends. Fred closes at 2am so no need to run home after. Also, there is a rumor that they might have a keg of Bitches Brew.  A rare keg for sure.  Not confirmed yet.  Either way, should be a good series, and a fun viewing party.
