Geeks Collide, Dogfish Head Urkontinent Is Born. Arrives In April
It was only a matter of time before beer geeks and technology geeks collaborated. Dogfish Head Breweryasked technology guru’s around the world to suggest ingredients for a beer. They received over 100 different suggestions and brewery employees and friends whittled that list down to five: wattleseed from Australia, toasted amaranth from South Africa, rooibos from Africa, myrica gale from Europe, and honey from the United States. It was also brewed with Pilsner, Munich, and Chocolate malts as well as Belgian Dark Candi syrup.
Each of the five ingredients adds its own flavor to Urkontinent…
Wattleseed from Australia imparts chocolate, coffee and hazelnut notes to the beer. Toasted amaranth from South America gives it an earthy, grainy flavor and a little additional roast flavor.
Green rooibos from Africa contributes a floral aroma and slight astringency.
Myrica gale from Europe supplements the bitterness from minimal hopping.
Hiveplex Honey from California adds a subtle sweetness while maintaining the dry finish.
Urkontinent was born. The name of this beer is German and comes from the theory that all of the continents, at one time, were connected. Dogfish Head Founder and President Sam Calagione says the 8.1% ABV Belgian Dubbel is “…a valentine to boot-strapping creative entrepreneurs in all kinds of industries all over the world.” Urkontinent will be available in 750ml champagne bottles and will have limited availability on draft. It will be available mid-April.

Dogfish Head’s latest brew is a Belgian Style Abbey Tripel called “Big As Tripel.” It’s big brother to Lil Hoppy. It was brewed with all certified organic malts. Next Dogfish Head Ancient Ale Echos Ancient Italian Civilization
The next beer in the Ancient Ale series from Dogfish Head will be derived from an Etruscan recipe from the year 800 BC. Sam Calagione just returned from a trip to Italy where he experimented with different ingredients for this beer with Molecular Archeologist Dr. Pat, Leo of Birra del Borgo, and Teo of Baladin Brewery.
It sounds as if the recipe is not completely put together yet but will include some very interesting ingredients. It is derived from evidence found at Etruscan dig sites. There is an Etruscan tree resin that Sam is considering for his new Ancient Ale. Other ingredients may come from Casale Marittimo where they found ancient drinking vessels with a resonated beverage containing hazelnuts, pomegranates, tree resins, and dried grapes. The recipe will also contain a local heirloom wheat called Saragolla which dates back to 400 BC.
Along with these ancient Italian ingredients, Sam will also be using a mix of chestnut and wildflower honey from the region. A tiny bit of hops will also be added as each brewery will pull a single leaf from one hop cone to add to the boil.
Much like the Saison du Buff brews, each brewery, Birra del Borgo, Baladin, and Dogfish Head will each release their own versions of this beer using the same ingredients but different process and materials. For example, Birra del Borgo has built terra cotta fermenters specifically for this beer. This ancient Italian brew will be released later this year. [Dogfish Head]
Welcome to March! Dogfish Head’sAprihop is now shipping. The fruity IPA is headed to your glass now, helping you get a little closer to Spring. Here’s a little description from the brewery.
Aprihop is our fruit beer for hopheads!
It is an American IPA brewed with Pilsner and Cystal malts massively hopped in in the continuous fashion. The flavor is complimented by the addition of Apricots. After fermentation the beer is dry hopped with irresponsible amounts of Amarillo hops. The beer is hoppy in the aroma with the apricots playing a supporting complimentary role. The flavor is rich with late hop flavors and it’s bitterness is tempered by just the right amount of malt sweetness and fruity undertones from the apricots. This is one of our most popular seasonal beers and we’ve been brewing it each spring for quite a while now. We release the beer each March and you should find it on the shelves through May.
