Deschute’s The Stoic Details

Deschutes Brewing’s newest beer The Stoic is hitting shelves. Stoic, a quadruple, is the result of 4 nuanced fermentations.  This quad touts the use of pomegranate molasses, Belgian yeast, and aged in pinot noir and rye whiskey barrels.

Our brewers describe a simple recipe ironically hard to brew. The classic malt bill is all Pilsner malt. Hallartau, Czech Saaz, and Northern Brewer hops sustain a deftly understated flavor. Belgian candy sugars add impact and the smooth body required of any Belgian-style brew worth quaffing. A healthy portion of pomegranate molasses casts an opulent, tangy twist, while a vintage Belgian yeast strain provides a solid reference point. Pinot Noir and Rye Whiskey barrel-aging suggest notes of spice, citrus, pepper, vanilla, and toasted caramel like offerings to the ancients.

Style: Quadruple (double barrel aged)
Hops: Hallertau, Czech Saaz, Northern Brewer
Belgian candi sugar

Availability:  22oz bottles. Capped/waxed

Deschutes Edition Of Boulevard Conflux ‘White IPA’

As mentioned earlier, Boulevard Brewing (Kansas City, MO) is collaborating with Deschutes Brewing (Bend, OR).  The breweries are creating a ‘white’ IPA.  Even more interesting – this collaboration doesn’t involve travelling.  The white IPA is created off a single recipe that will become unique when Deschutes & Boulevard brew it.  Each brewery is releasing this beer under their own labels.

Label:

Isn’t it how it always works? A few brewers sit around tippling and waxing poetic about what-ifs, wild ideas and untapped dreams when one suddenly proclaims “why not?” So the conflux series was born, bravely leaping corporate and geographic barriers to jointly explore uncharted beeratory.  Cheers, fellow explorers, cheers.

Second in a series, this citrusy, smooth white india pale ale is a fortuitous meeting of Deschutes’ hop skills and Boulevard’s deft wheat touch.  What’s 1800 miles when a great beer is at stake?

Style: Belgian IPA
Availability: 750ml Bottles, Draft.  All regions where Boulevard & Deschutes is distributed.

7.5% ABV

Deschutes Brewing will be distributed in Missouri soon. June — July launch date.

Deschutes Brewer Departs

The brewmaster of Deschutes Brewing Larry Sidor has left his post to start his own brewery according to a press release.   Details of the new brewery haven’t been made available yet.  Sidor plans to be at Deschutes through the end of 2011.

Press Release

(Bend, OR) — Deschutes Brewery announced today that Larry Sidor, Brewmaster, is leaving the company at the end of the year to pursue a lifelong dream of starting and running his own brewery. Sidor has been at the brewery for eight years, following 23 years at Olympia Brewing Company, in development and production at a Yakima hop dealer and creating a small winery.

“My years at Deschutes Brewery have been incredible. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed leading and collaborating with the brewing team to hone and create its phenomenal portfolio of beers, but also originating new beer styles and brewing techniques,” said Sidor. “I will always be proud of the work we’ve accomplished together, and be grateful for the support of Gary and the leadership team for taking creative risks. While I transition to the next phase of my career, over the next several months, my heart and head will be with the Deschutes Brewery team and will remain focused on their continued success.”

Boulevard & Deschutes Make A Long Distance Collaboration

Boulevard Brewing (Kansas City, MO) is collaborating with Deschutes Brewing (Bend, OR).  This summer the world will meet “White IPA.”  Interestingly enough, this beer doesn’t involve travelling to each other’s breweries.  White IPA is based off a single shared recipe, becoming unique as each brewery produces it.  Boulevard specializes in Belgian style witbiers, while Deschutes loves the hops.  Both breweries will release this beer under their own labels.

From the Sales Sheet For White IPA:

Despite the beers’ shared recipe, each of the two versions will develop a distinct, unique identity, to be reflected in their naming and packaging. Boulevard’s half of the equation, christened Collaboration No. 2, will be distributed throughout their 20-state region in kegs and 750ml bottles, as part of the Smokestack Series seasonal lineup. Brewed at their Bend, Oregon facility, Deschutes’ effort will be the second beer in their new Conflux collaboration series, and will be distributed throughout their 18-state region in kegs and 22-ounce bottles.

Style:Belgian IPA
Availability: 750ml Bottles, Draft.  All regions where Boulevard & Deschutes is distributed.
