Bell’s Batch 10,000 = 191 Ingredients!

The arrival of the last of Bell’s “Batch” series is eminent.  Up to now we knew it would be an American strong ale.  What we really didn’t know was that it has 191 ingredients!  That’s right! Kitchen sink brewing.  To end this series, Larry Bell wanted to use a little bit of all the malts & hops he’s used for 25+ years.

Batch 10,000 uses 101 fermentables (malts), 58 different hops in the boil, and is dry hopped with 32 different hop varieties.  Sounds complicated, but potentially awesome.

[Update 12/10 – Confirmed arrived next week]

Friday at 6pm, The Porter taps a cask of Bell’s Brewing’s fall seasonal Best Brown Ale.  This is one of the most popular seasonal brown ales.

Commercial Description:
A smooth, toasty brown ale, Best Brown Ale is a mainstay in our fall & winter lineup. With hints of caramel and cocoa, the malt body has the depth to stand up to cool weather, but does not come across as heavy. This balancing act is aided by the generous use of American hops.

Style: English Brown Ale

Taste Expectations: Caramel & toffee.  Earthy hops, brown sugar.  Some cocoa, and nuts.

Bell’s Batch 10,000 Bottled

We knew batch 10,000 was arriving on the heels of 25th Anniversary being released.  The only thing we didn’t know was when.   Arrival date is still not 100% known (it takes a while to ship to distributors, and then to stores)  we know now from Bell’s website that it was bottled yesterday.

From Bell’s:
The last in our Batch series is being packaged today and tomorrow. While we are excited to free up some brewing space for other creative projects, the end of the Batch series marks a major milestone for us, and is a little bittersweet being the end of an era. Batch 10,000 reflects our homebrewing roots and was inspired by the the last homebrew of the season. Our owner Larry Bell remembers going through his brewing supplies and making the last homebrew out of whatever malts and hops were left from his brewing months. With this being the motivation behind our last commemorative batch series beer, we combed through the catalogs of many malt and hop suppliers to source 100 different malts, grains, and other fermentables. This is balanced by the addition of 60 different hop varietals between the kettle and dry hopping. The resulting beer presents a deep, chocolate brown hue and offers roasted and caramel notes from the malts mixed with an assertive hop character. Feel free to drink it fresh, or vintage age it as you please.

We lift our glass in appreciation to Bell’s drinkers who have helped us reach this moment in our brewery’s history. Cheers to you!

Arrival: 2-3 weeks.

SEASONAL RETURN: Bell’s Winter White

Bell’s Brewing’s Winter seasonal isn’t a dark, spicy, malty beer.  This winter beer has a Belgian flair – it’s witbier.  Witbier translates to “white beer” originating in Belgium, and is top fermented.  This beer style got it’s name due to the suspended yeast in beer creating a hazy, white effect when cold.  Thusly, Winter White Ale is appropriately named.  The German version of witbier is called  weissbier.

Commercial Description:
Taking its cues from Belgian-style white ales, Bell’s Winter White Ale offers a lighter yet abundantly flavorful alternative to the traditional heavy winter warmers. Fermented with a Belgian ale yeast, this blend of barley & wheat malts yields a mixture of clove and fruity aromas, all without the use of any spices. Deliberately brewed to retain a cloudy appearance, Bell’s Winter White Ale is a beer for embracing winter.

Style: Witbier

Taste Expectations: Coriander & orange & citrus. Smells of wheat, which shines through in flavor.  Grassy hops. Touch of lemon.

Availability: 12oz/6pks.  Draft. Keg Can.

5% ABV

Bell’s Oarsmen Bottles

This beer has made a couple of showings on tap handles around Atlanta.  Very limited.  Ironically, this is a year round offering from Bell’s Brewing (Kalamazoo, MI)  Some bottles have just popped up in Atlanta.  It’s pale, light, wheat, and worth a look.

Commercial Description:
Designed as a flavorful session beer, Oarsman Ale uses a classic German brewing technique to impart a light, refreshing tartness. Oarsman Ale grew out of a desire to explore the tradition of session beers, trading intensity for finesse while still creating a worthwhile experience for the taster. The grain bill includes a healthy portion of wheat, while light hopping lend citrus & herbal notes to the aroma. Fermented with Bell’s house ale yeast, Oarsman comes in at 4.0% alcohol by volume. Rather than being the dominant flavor note, the tartness in Oarsman takes on more of a palate-cleansing role, making it perfect with meals or purely on its own.

Style: American Pale Wheat Ale

Taste Expectations: Lemon, bread, citric with a touch of tart.  Wheat shines through with a bit of honey.  Light, & an easy drink.

Availability: 12oz Bottles. Limited draft.  Year round by Bell’s.  Limited availability in the southeast.

4% ABV
