Experimentation.
Ales and lagers that defy styles or categories. This is what we are about: our driving force, our passion. To further facilitate this innovative spirit, we’ve developed our Barrel-Aged Series where anything, and we mean ANYTHING, goes! Brewed for those as adventurous as we are!

Flavor Profile:
Aged for eighteen months in fresh Cabernet Sauvignon wine barrels, Dihos Dactylion features a primary fermentation using a proprietary blend of saison yeasts, a secondary fermentation of our house brettanomyces wild yeast strain, along with lactobacillus and pediococcus bacteria added to sour things up. Dihos Dactylion bursts with aggressive aromas of red wine and a touch of brett; delightfully sour to the taste, initial lactic acid flavors hit high in the cheekbones before transitioning to complex layers of soft fruit, oaky-tannins and red wine.

BEER SPOTLIGHT: Avery’s “The Kaiser”

It’s marzen season. Fall is technically here, and thus it’s malty lagers follow with it. There is an oktoberfest/marzen beer that is a stands out each year. It’s a big one, which is nothing new to Avery Brewing (Boulder, Colorado). This aggressive beer bears the name “The Kaiser”. This is no 5% lager.

Commerical Description:
The Kaiser sonce said, “Give me a woman who loves beer and I will conquer the world.” If the Kaiser and his significant other had tipped this bottle, we’d all be “sprechenden Deutsch!” We took all that is good in a traditional Oktoberfest – gorgeous, deep copper sheen, massive malty backbone and spicy, floral, pungent noble hops – then intensified each into this, an Imperial Oktoberfest.

Beer Rundown:
Style: Oktoberfest/Marzen
Hops: Magnum, Sterling, Tettnang, Hersbrucker
Malts: Two-row barley, Vienna, Munich 10L, m-100, aromatic

Taste Expectations: Sweet toasty bready malts. Caramel malts, slight twinge of brown sugar.  Nice and grainy too. Dark fruits, slight hint of raisin. It’s 10%, but the alcohol doesn’t make a star appearance.

Food Pairings: Fall soups, chicken, turkey, brats, dried meats, light cheeses.

Availability: Vintage dated 22oz Bombers. Limited draft. Brewed Aug 1st seasonally.

10% ABV

NEW RELEASE: Avery Seventeen

Just released by Avery Brewing (Boulder, Co) is their 17th Anniversary brew.  Last year for their 16th, was a saison.  This year is a dry hopped black lager.

This edition emphasizes noble German hops with a dark malt profile.  It’s comparable to a schwarzbier or “black beer.”  Schwarzbier is a dark German lager that uses a bottom fermenting lager yeast, with no roasted barley. Dark malts used in brewing give the lager chocolate or coffee tones, depending on what was used.

From the label –

“After years of commemorating our anniversary with deliciously wild and weird ales, we decided to mix it up a bit and create our first Anniversary Lager. SEVENTEEN is a celebration and case study of the aromas and flavors of German hops. And knowing our fetish for those beautiful green cones, you can be confident that the contents of this bottle are excessively hopped for your olfactory pleasure. Many thanks to all and we hope you enjoy our lupulin dissertation. Peace to all and follow your dreams! Brewed with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, imported German hops, and German yeast.”

Taste Expectations – Sweet toasted malts and chocolate.  This black lager is bready, with some caramel.  There is an underlying freshness to this lager.  German noble hops.

Availability – 22oz bombers.  One time, anniversary release.  Draft unspecified.

8.5% ABV
