Amidst an already busy 2013 for Anheuser-Busch, Justin Timberlake was named creative director for Bud Light Platinum. Last night during the Grammy’s the first JT commercial emerged. Rough idea behind this move? Timberlake adds a “classy” attitude to the beer, now just over a year old.

Justin Timberlake Partners with Bud Light Platinum

In a move that has certainly broken my craft beer and N*Sync loving heart, Justin Timberlake has announced he is partnering with Bud Light Platinum and will serve as the brand’s creative director. “Bud Light Platinum brings a refined, discerning aesthetic to beer that plays well with what I’m doing,” says Timberlake.

He hopes to bring other musicians on board to boost brand recognition in the future. The partnership will kick off this weekend during the Grammy’s with a 60 second commercial featuring JT, the beer, and his new single Suit & Tie.

Budweiser Commercial Spot Tops USA Ad Meter Poll

“Brotherhood”, the 2013  Clydesdale commercial by Anheuser-Busch topped USA Today’s Ad Meter. The young foal growing up and leaving his trainer, only to be reunited at a parade in the future pulled a few heartstrings. Using the Twitter hashtag #Clydesdales, those interested can attempt to name the little guy, who was just 7 days old  this January when it was filmed.

Over 7,000 panelists help judge USA Today’s  Ad poll, now in its 25th year. #2 spot goes to Tide and the Joe Montana miracle stain. Only two other beers were advertised this year during the Super Bowl – Redd’s Apple Ale, and Beck’s Sapphire (after Budweiser Black Crown of course).

U.S. Dept Of Justice Strikes at Anheuser-Busch Deal

Oops. The United States Department of Justice is filing a lawsuit to stop Anheuser-Busch InBev’s acquisition of Grupo Modelo (Corona). That could drag out the acquisition for quite sometime.

“If ABI fully owned and controlled Modelo, ABI would be able to increase beer prices to American consumers,” Bill Baer, the head of department’s antitrust division, said in a statement. “This lawsuit seeks to prevent ABI from eliminating Modelo as an important competitive force in the beer industry.”

Why? The contention is that the merger/purchase would eliminate the practically head to head competition between A-B InBev and Grupo Modelo. Especially between the Bud Light  and Corona brands. Total revenue Grupo Modelo and Anheuser-Busch is over $45 Billion in 2012.

Budweiser Launches First Ever Twitter Account

Budweiser has launched its first ever Twitter account — www.twitter.com/budweiser. It has been live for about 24 hours now. The first tweet was about newborn 150-pound baby clydesdale. Using the hashtag #clydesdales, Budweiser  is asking Twitter followers of @Budweiser and those on Facebook friends to name the baby equine. You’ll see the yet to be named horse star in a 60 second Super Bowl spot on February 3rd.

This newest member of the Budweiser Clydesdale family was 7 days old on the day this part of the Super Bowl commercial was filmed,” said Jeff Knapper, general manager of Clydesdale operations. “A star was truly born on Jan. 16.”

2013 marks the 23rd year that the Budweiser Clydesdales have appeared in Super Bowl commercials, dating back to 1986. [Press Release]
