Beer & Cease & Desists

legal-glossaries

Judging by the number of people that have brought this to my attention, I guess it’s time to say something. So here goes.

Recently, SweetWater Brewing Company (ATL) sent and cease & desist letter to another quite popular brewery over the use of “420”. SweetWater is protecting the trademark of their #1 selling beer. Honestly, that happens all the time (in brewing and out). I recently met someone at a bar that spends their days sending the same kind of letter for The Walking Dead tv show. It has become a part of daily life for some.

Why are we talking about this today? Simple. After receiving the C&D, the brewer took to Twitter and voiced his reactions to the legal document. Now everyone knows about it. Within minutes of his Tweets, I was getting text messages an emails. Primarily because I live in Atlanta and am quite close with SweetWater. This type of stuff is drama and people thrive off of it. (Hell, it means more site traffic for Beer Street Journal too.) Various beer websites have picked up the story all reporting on these individual’s thoughts.

This is the thing. Cease and Desist letters happen ALL THE TIME in the brewing industry. More breweries means more beers, more beer names, and someone is going to get too close to another name. (Recently, Magic Hat & West Sixth). Sometimes it is interesting to see the drama unfold, logos change, etc. But this is the thing – do we go over this every time? Perhaps I’m biased. Perhaps when brewers fight publicly (again Magic Hat and West Sixth) we have to mention it.

So, here is the official mention on Beer Street Journal. Trying to leave the bias behind and let the suits sort it out. Personally, the suns up. Time for a beer.

Mumford & Sons Create Own Beer

Cranks some Mumford tunes and read this. Band frontman Marcus Mumford has created his own brew for the Lewes Music Festival.  The beer, dubbed Lewes Stopover Brew, is a golden ale that is just 4% ABV. The band created it at Bridge Wharf Brewery in England.

Don’t expect to see much of the beer anywhere. There will/are be less than 1000 pints in existence.

Op-Ed: Women & Beer Stereotype Persists

Screen Shot 2013-07-05 at 2.36.27 PM

Did you know that as a lady it is incredibly difficult to read a beer menu and pick one out? Good thing I have a man to get me a sweet, fruity beer since having a vagina clearly disables me from figuring out what I like on my own – at least according to this article from Women’s Forum. Who is still out there making the beer world a men vs. women industry? Because I’d like to meet you and promptly set you straight using whatever means necessary. I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with fruit beers, but stop stereotyping. I’ve met women who can pick out hop varieties just from smelling their beers, that can distinguish flavors and nuances using incredibly developed palates, and can drink many men under the table for days. As far as I’m concerned, this video (which isn’t embeddable unfortunately) and article are garbage.

Women, men, everyone – if you’re interested in getting into beer, but aren’t sure where to start, find positive resources amongst the community to guide you on your way. Go to the store or bar and try things to find your own favorites. Ladies: don’t be afraid to chat with other women who are already submerged such as The Beer Wench, Ladies of Craft Beer, or Hey Brewtiful just to name a few. Jeez tweet me personally if you want! Don’t be scared and don’t let anyone stop you from ordering the super dank dry-hopped IPA just because you have lady parts.

Anchorman’s “Baxter” Stopped By Red Brick Brewing

Red Brick BaxterI personally really hope that you have seen the movie Anchorman. The sequel, Anchorman 2 has been filming here in Atlanta.  What a lot of people don’t know is that the space next door to Red Brick Brewing in Atlanta’s west side is home to a couple of Hollywood production warehouses. (Also, rapper 2Chains home base too).

A few weeks ago, Red Brick’s Chris Dreury was standing out front when Baxter walks up to him. I guess he needed a beer to go with that whole wheel of cheese.
