Senator Schumer Pushes For Beer Mail

Food for thought. You can ship ammunition. Guns and rifles. Various gases, even small fireworks/explosives. However, you can get fined or ever jail time in some states for shipping booze.

This week, Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) called to overturn the law that disallows the U.S. Postal Service from shipping beer, wine, and spirits in New York. A move he calls – a win, win, win.

In a time where the postal service needs cash, and craft beer is growing in the state (and beyond), there isn’t a whole lot of room for partisan politics in this one.

The existing law dates back to 1909. Schumer states that a law change could bring as much as $225 million in increase revenue.

Man Goes Back Into Burning Building to Save Beer

Six adults and two children were watching tv in Columbus, Georgia when the fire broke out.  All the individuals got out of the burning building safely, until Walter Serpit had something important to save. Beer.

Serpit, who walks with a cane, and a self proclaimed alcoholic, ran back into the fire to save his beer stash.

“I told them to get the kids out and everything, and me myself, being an alcoholic, I was trying to get my beer out,” he said. “You feel me?”

Serpit managed to save a few cans of beer before he was forced to leave.

Political Analyst Accuses Brewery of Promoting “Rape Culture”

Deep Ellum has found itself in some hot water for the branding of one of their brews – Dallas Blonde. The branding (seen above) features a blonde doll with the tagline “goes down easy.” The double entrendre wasn’t so well received.

Opponents like Genevieve Cato wrote on the political blog Burnt Orange Report that the “lazy use of this well-worn sexist comparison of women to alcohol is disappointing and insulting.” She further added that this contributes to the acceptability of rape culture.

John Reardon, the owner of Deep Ellum Brewing posted a reply in regards to the Facebook and Twitter discussions surrounding the branding:

You have a choice in the way you perceive this campaign. It can be seen in its literal sense, you can choose to see the innuendo, or you can fly off the deep end and call it rape culture. But those are your thoughts, and your thoughts only, to own.

Some jokes, even if with the best of intentions, can offend other people. John Reardon might have learned the hard way. Don’t miss his thoughts on the matter.
