What Happened To Cigar City In GA?

If you live in Atlanta, you were excited to hear the news of Cigar City Brewing making the jump over the Florida border.  That was months ago.  Word on the street was that the beers would be on the shelves by March.  Fact:  CC is approved for distribution in Georgia.  Savannah Distribution will bring the beers to the masses. But when?

After doing some investigation, here’s your state of affairs.  Cigar City is in their 3rd year of existence.  Their growth has been overwhelming to say the least.  Making a jump to Atlanta means you have 6 million more thirsty mouths to feed. (Ok, so they all aren’t drinkers – but ATL is a big market.  You get the idea.)  So to keep up with the current and soon to be future demand for their tasty brews, CC is adding a brewhouse and tanks.  Currently, CC produces about 12,000 barrels a year.  With the new brewhouse, Cigar’s capacity jumps to 40,000 barrels a year.  The brewery is being upgraded as we speak.

When Atlanta?  Cigar City is aiming to be on the shelves by end of summer, 2011.  This isn’t set in stone by any means, but highly tentative.  Just relax and remember they are indeed on the way.  Above and below are the new labels CC has been rolling out.

Other CC Stuff:

– June 1st is the release of Tocobaga.  The winner of the artwork contest will be announced.  First bottles sold at the event that night will be signed by the artist.

– Neilsbohrium & 110k + OT were recently released.  Already scarce.

Surly Succeeds! Destination Brewery On The Way

Surly Brewing fans rejoice.  Today is a good day. Beer legislation is working in your favor.  In their 5th year, Surly has been planning a $20 million dollar “destination brewery.”  This issue was Minnesota laws prevented the dream from being realized.  The biggest issue was the prevention of being able to sell pints of beer at the brewery.

The Minnesota Licensed Beverage Association a liquor lobby, was standing in opposition of Surly’s plans.  The brewery hired lobbyists & fought back on behalf of the “Surly Nation” and won.  The law has been softened to allow breweries producing less that 250,000 barrels a year to be excluded from current regulations.

The new destination brewery will have a beer garden with rooftop terrance, restaurant & bar.  Location TBD.  <StarTribune>

Wild Goose Brewing’s 2011 Comeback

Wild Goose Brewing was based in Frederick, Maryland.  Flying Dog Brewing purchased Wild Goose for $1.4 million in 2006, and inherited their brands.  November of 2010, the brand & brewery was completely done.

Flying Dog started hunting for a new buyer early last year.  A buyer finally came forward recently – Wild Goose has been purchased by Logan Shaw Brewery in Washington, D.C.  From the press release:
Logan Shaw Brewing Company plans to pair the Wild Goose beers with the craft beers produced by Logan Shaw, under the Logan Shaw brand, beginning in mid 2011. “We felt that Wild Goose was a great brand for us as we get into the local craft beer business. It is a well-established brand known for great quality, taste, and consistency.  We thank Flying Dog for their support of the brand and their assistance through this process,” says Jeff Harrison, president of Logan Shaw Brewing.
The Wild Goose brands are being contract brewed in the Chesapeake Bay area until a physical brewery is constructed.  The fans of the 20+ year old brewery can get excited as these beers get closer to taps & shelves again.  Labels include Extra Pale Ale, Brown Lager, IPA, Snow Goose, Oatmeal Stout, Pumpkin Patch Ale, & XPA.

Arrival: Mid 2011.  Starting in Maryland then larger distribution over time

Full Press Release – December, 2010

Frederick, MD – December, 23, 2010 – Logan Shaw Brewing Company, an upstart brewery out of Washington DC, has agreed to purchase the Wild Goose brand from Flying Dog Brewery.

Flying Dog Brewery inherited the Wild Goose brand as part of the purchase of the Frederick Brewing Company’s brewing facility from Snyder International in 2006, and has maintained the brand’s presence regionally ever since.  As demand for Flying Dog has increased over the past year (sales are up 40% nationally, with triple digit growth regionally in the mid-Atlantic in 2010), the brewery has moved steadily toward a singular focus on the Flying Dog brand.

Flying Dog began looking for viable options to secure the future of the Wild Goose brand in February of 2010, and the brewery was specifically looking for a suitor that was interested in the continued growth and success of Wild Goose.  In December 2010, Flying Dog decided that Logan Shaw was the best and most capable option to assume ownership of the Wild Goose brand.

According to Loren Leroy, Logan Shaw Brewing’s head of production, “As a resident of the Chesapeake Bay area, I jumped at the chance to buy the Wild Goose brand.  It has always been one of my favorite beers, and it’s exciting to have the opportunity to grow such an iconic craft beer brand.”

Logan Shaw Brewing Company will have Wild Goose contract brewed regionally until its own brewing facility is completed in approximately 18 months.

Not Penicillin, Not Tonic, Concoction?

The government thinks we are stupid.  Thus the fairly stringent rules about how to name beer.   Brooklyn Brewing’s newest beer in their Brewmaster’s Reserve series is based on a popular cocktail called “Penicillin.”  Of course that won’t fly as a beer name, so Brooklyn used the name “The Tonic.”  It seems now that Tonic won’t fly either.

Sources close to the brewery are telling me  they are going to have to go with the name “The Concoction.”  Apparently naming a beer with verbiage relating to, or making reference to it having a “therapeutic or curative property” is a no-no.  A relationship cannot be made to drinking and such names.

Whatever its name, this honey/lemon/ginger draft only offering is not far away from glasses.

Ex Gratia Benefits Alex’s Lemonade Stand

Another feel good beer story. Stoudt’s Brewing has created “Ex Gratia” benefitting Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF).  The foundation began with Alex, a little girl diagnosed with childhood cancer.  She created a lemonade stand in her front yard to raise money to give to doctors to help find a cure for children with cancer.  One day she made a whopping $2000 dollars.  Sadly, Alex lost the fight in 2004 at the age of 8.

The foundation is still active, helping raise money for cancer research.  Enter Stoudt’s.  Jodi Stoudt teamed up with Osteria in Philadelphia.  Osteria provided Lemon marmalade, which Stoudts infused into the brewing of Karnival Kolsch.   The result is a light, sweet, lemony beer great for summer, great for the cause.

The kegs will be distributed around Philadelphia.  All proceeds be donated to ALSF.  A pint will sell for about 8 dollars a glass; each keg raising about $1000 dollars.  Check out the video about the beer. Ex Gratia is latin for “Of Favor.”  (Love Jodi’s hat she’s wearing in the video BTW.)
