Marshal Zhukov’s New Label, New Jose Marti Version

Marshal Zhukov's New Label

In keeping with the 750 ml label updates, it is Marshal Zhukov’s turn.   Recently, news broke that Cigar City was releasing barrel aged editions of Big Sound Scotch Ale, and Hunahpu.  There are barrel aged editions of Zhukov, perhaps soon.

Label:
This Russian Imperial Stout is dedicated to George Zhukov, arguably one of the finest generals of World War II.  Opaque black in color, with notes of espresso, chocolate, dark toffee and hints of blackstrap molasses. The English hop varietals provide subtle herbal dryness, and finishes with a hearty slap of roasty espresso.  Pair Marshal Zhukov’s with Mushroom Solyanka, dark chocolate, cherries and ground wars in Russia.

Style: Russian Imperial Stout
Availability: 750ml bottles, Draft.
11% ABV

New Jose Marti Version

There is also a Jose Marti variation – this one aged on oak spirals.  Tentatively slated for a Rare Beer Club offering only…

Label:
I wish to leave the world by its natural door; In my tomb of green leaves they are to carry me to die.   Do not put me in the dark to die like a traitor; I am good, and like a good thing I will die with my face to the sun. – A Morir [To Die] (1894)

Style: American Porter
8% ABV

Victory Cancels Brewery Tours

Victory Brewing

Victory Brewing has had to make a tough decision.  Brew & cellar, or conduct brewery tours.  Bill Covaleski mentioned today on their website that tours of the brewery will no longer be conducted after July 4th, 2011.

Unfortunately, there was a challenging call that did have to be made at Victory Brewing Company. Those of you who have been fortunate enough to have peeked behind the artisanal/industrial curtain by touring our brewing operations over the last 15 years, consider yourself lucky. You have a memory that no one else can now achieve. As of July 4, we are choosing taste over vision. The world will go “blind” to our brewery operations as tours will no longer be available.

… The reality we now face, as brewing and cellar operations become a 7 day a week labor due to swelling orders, is that we cannot safely conduct both tours and business in tight spaces. In essence, you, as a consumer, made the dire decision for us. Your thirst for flavorful Victory beers has stolen your vision of their creation. We are truly sorry to present this news to you. At this time, there is no other option, despite the hand-wringing and postulating that took place during the many meetings we spent discussing this predicament.

Flying Monkey Claims Hoppiest Beer. 2500 IBUs

World’s Hoppiest Beer?  2500 IBU’s?  There will be some people who argue that 2500 IBUs is WAY, WAY outside the detectable bitterness range.  (130 is pushing it.)  Flying Monkeys Craft Brewery in Barrie, Ontario claims to have the hoppiest of the hoppy.   “Alpha-fornication”  as the beer is called, is made by  manipulating aggressive hop styles & the brewing process itself.
Highly creative and complex manipulation of the high alpha acid hop varieties, Warrior (17% AAU) and Centennial (11.5% AAU). A hop-steeped wort re-circulated through an additional “Hop Vorlauf” punches up the insane intensity of this brew to a stupefying 2500 IBUs. Keeping with the concepts of extreme brewing, the 13.3% ABV of Alpha-fornication adds bigness to this beer.
Don’t expect to see much of this beer (an imperial IPA, as if you had to ask.) Only 15 liters (just shy of 4 gallons) of Alpha-Fornication was kegged.  Only 6 bottles were even made.  Flying Monkeys calls this beer one of their ‘Everest Experiments,’ an obvious series of extreme beers.  Can’t wait to see the price tag on this one.  <EdmontonJournal>

U.S. Senate Creates Small Brewers Caucus

The Brewers Association announced that the U.S. Senate has created a Small Brewers Caucus.  It’s a bi-partisan effort by Senators Max Baucus & Mike Crapo.  The caucus will act as an advocate for the 1,700+ breweries in the U.S., and help raise awareness of the booming buisness.

Press Release

BOULDER, CO — The Brewers Association (BA) shared the news today that the Senate Small Brewers Caucus has been established. The formation of the Caucus was led by Senators Max Baucus (D-Mont.) and Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), who support the role of America’s small and independent brewers as an engine of economic growth in the country.

In a Dear Colleague letter, Senators Baucus and Crapo noted, “In recent years, the more than 1,700 craft brewers all across America have met growing consumer demand for their products by brewing flavorful and innovative beers which they encourage Americans to enjoy in a responsible manner. These small and independent brewers…generate more than $3 billion in wages and benefits, and pay more than $2.3 billion in business, personal and consumption taxes.”

Mirroring the House Small Brewers Caucus, formed in 2007, the Senate Small Brewers Caucus provides a forum for members of the Senate and their staffs to discuss the issues important to small brewers while exploring what lawmakers can do to strengthen the growth and role of these small businesses in local economies across the country.

The caucus will also provide opportunities for Senators and staff to learn about the science and art of brewing beer, and the unique cultural and economic contributions made by small brewers to their communities.

Currently, the 1,700+ small American breweries account for about five percent of all the beer enjoyed in the United States and 50 percent of brewery jobs–-totaling some 100,000 good-paying part- and full-time positions across the country.

“Montana’s small brewers don’t just make great beer out of the best Montana grains–-they also support good-paying Montana jobs,” said Senator Baucus. “I’m so proud to create the bipartisan Senate Small Brewers Caucus–-because as the state with the second highest number of craft brewers per capita in the country, Montana small brewers need a voice in Congress who’ll keep looking out for them.” Montana boasts a strong brewing community, which generates and pays taxes on approximately $20 million of revenue, according to the Montana Brewers Association.

“As a major producer of barley, wheat and hops, Idaho has a growing role in the craft brewing business,” Senator Crapo said. “While advocating for the excise tax relief bill, I’ve had the opportunity to meet with many of Idaho’s small craft brewers and heard firsthand from local entrepreneurs about the opportunities for economic growth and job creation that the industry can provide. This caucus will provide Senators with a better understanding of all aspects of small brewing and the positive impact it has on their communities.” Senator Crapo, along with Senator John Kerry (D-Mass.), introduced this session’s Senate bill S. 534, which would recalibrate excise taxes on America’s small brewers. Joining Senators Kerry and Crapo were 17 of their Senate colleagues who signed on as original co-sponsors.

“Small craft brewers are growing, creating jobs and contributing in small and big ways to the recovery of the American economy,” said Charlie Papazian, president, Brewers Association. “The bipartisan establishment of the Senate Small Brewers Caucus reflects the collaborative, grassroots community spirit in which the nation’s small brewers contribute to their local communities.”

Founders All Day IPA Label Winner

Founder’s Brewing took a poll back in April asking people to vote for their new All Day IPA label.  Meet the winner.  The ABV is higher than 4%, so those hardcore session people are going to have a tough time with this one.  Another way to look at it: in the world of IPAs there aren’t many that are below 5% or even in the neighborhood of 4%.  A 4.7% IPA would be easier to drink over time.
