Old Style A Crucial Beer To Cubs Experience

After 61 years, a touted “beer tradition” may come to an end.  Pabst Blue Ribbon Old Style might leave Wrigley Field.

The American lager has has been sold at Wrigley since 1950, over 6 decades ago.  Regardless of how you feel about the beer, people tie drinking Old Style to sports tradition, even superstition.  61 years of Old Style haven’t brought a World Series trophy to Wrigley (103 year drought), but at the park beer tradition is alive an well.

Recently Pabst, the makers of Old Style, were purchased by C. Dean Metropoulos.  With the purchase, the announcement of some company changes, including a move to Los Angeles.  In an internal memo (how does this stuff get out?) Metropoulos mentioned ending the 61 year run with Wrigley in favor of an expanded commercial push for Old Style Light.

Just the thought is leaving a bad taste in some fans mouths.  Sports are tied to traditions.  It’s all part of the fan experience.  I guess it would be like taking hotdogs out of the park.   You look forward to some Old Style and some Cubs baseball.  I don’t blame ’em. [CBSAtlanta]

Two Beers Fresh Hop Available Today

Two Beers Brewing (Seattle, WA) is release fresh hop for their 3rd year.  The brewery become one of the first breweries to release fresh hop offering in the U.S. this season.

The fresh hops include: Amarillo, Centennial, & cascade.

First brewed in 2009, Fresh Hop enters its third season on the brewery’s fall lineup. This Northwest-inspired brew’s strong citrus aroma — featuring hints of grapefruit and passion fruit — can be attributed to the freshly picked, Yakima Valley-grown Centennial hops used to create it, harvested from Puterbaugh Farms, the family hop farm of Assistant Brewer Tyler Pickel. Copper in color with deep caramel malt tones, Fresh Hop 2011 settles in at 6.2 percent ABV resembling an aggressively dry-hopped mid-range IPA, but packing the punch only fresh hops can deliver. In addition to Centennial hops, this beer features locally grown Amarillo, Simcoe, Nugget and Columbus hops, helping this popular beer achieve its bright and delightfully bitter flavor.

Fresh Hop will be made available today, 3 pm.

Style: IPA (Fresh hopped)

6.2% ABV, 72 IBUs
