Terrapin To Drop Gamma Ray, Rye Squared. Considers Barrel Aging

Terrapin Brewing has enjoyed pretty much exponential growth since their inception in 2002.  Here in 2011, the brewery has a strong demand in the markets they are currently in.   How much demand?

BSJ interviewed John Cochran, Co-Founder of Terrapin.  Here’s what’s coming up with our favorite turtle:

Distributor have but in orders for 30,000 barrels, when Terrapin can only produce just shy of 20,000.  A great situation to be in.   With this in mind, the the brewery will not be entering an new markets in the next 2-3 years.  The next few years will be dedicated to meeting demand.

In the fall, when money becomes available, the brewery plans to purchase some more fermenters.

What’s up on the beer front?

  • In 2012, Gamma Ray and Rye Squared will be going away.  Both those beers are a part of the Monster Beer Tour 4pks.  They will be replaced with new offerings to be announced.
  • The brewery has some red wine barrels, and is toying with the idea of a barrel aged Monk’s Revenge next year.
  •  Continue dreaming about the re-release of Depth Charge.
  • Hopzilla, the hoppy imperial IPA Side Project from 2010 will return in 2012 in 4 packs. (Monster Beer Tour)
  • Terrapin has never released a barleywine, one is planned for the future.
  • The next Side Project (#16) will indeed be dubbed Flux Capacitor.  Style has yet to be determined.  Still shooting for the end of the year….
  • The recent BFM/Terrapin collab didn’t come out exactly as the brewers envisioned.  Another batch on the way.  Plans are being made for the current batch. (More barrel aging etc.) Bottles still on the way to the U.S.

Redhook Adds Bombers

Redhook Brewing is expanding their 22oz bottle lineup.  Expect to see ESB, IPA, and Pilsner arrive in the larger bottle format soon.  In October, Winterhook.

“We’re thrilled to expand our offering of beers available in 22 ounce bottles,” said Greg Deuhs, Redhook brewmaster. “They’re great for times when you want more Redhook beer than the standard 12oz bottle, or for those occasions when you’re feeling generous and want to share with your friends.”

About these beers:

Pilsner – 5.2% ABV: Czech out Redhook’s newest brew.  Redhook Pilsner is crisp, golden lager that is modeled after those historic beers originally made in Plzeň, Czechoslovakia.  Redhook Pilsner’s maltiness is offset by a medium dose of Saaz hops and finishes with a clean, bright, thirst-quenching quality. A great “session” lager for when you’ve got a long day ahead of drinking.

ESB – 5.8% ABV.  Brewed in the style of a traditional British ESB (Extra Special Bitter), we’ve been making ESB continuously since 1987, and it’s now the benchmark for the Amber beer category.  Despite having “bitter” in its name, Redhook ESB is really not that bitter at all.  This brew is all about the balance of caramel malt sweetness completed by spicy, citrusy hops.

IPA – 6.5% ABV. The generous addition of hops both during and at the end of the fermentation process (dry-hopping) gives our India Pale Ale its characteristic bitterness and piney citrus aroma and flavor.  The medium body, crisp finish, and moderate alcohol and IBU levels makes this one of America’s most drinkable and best-selling IPAs.

Drake’s Jolly Roger 2011

Drake’s Brewing Company’s Jolly Rodger changes each year.  2011 marks the 22nd brewing of this beer, destined to be a black IPA style.   2010 was an imperial red ale.

For our 2011 Jolly Rodger we’ve crossed over to the Dark side and brought loads of hops along for the trip to make an Imperial Dark IPA. Starting with just the right blend of American 2-row barley, dark roasted barley and Rye to give the beer its smooth mouthfeel and intimidating darkness, we then hit it hard with Chinook, Citra and CTZ hops to give it a classic “West Coast” style hoppy aroma and flavor. Smooth, crisp and hop-forward, but with a heart of darkness.

Style: Imperial Black IPA
Availability: 22oz bombers, Draft

8.75% ABV, 90 IBUs
