Bell’s Expansion A “Primal, Geometric Form”

Bell’s $17 millon dollar expansion is underway. (Soon you’ll have all the Two Hearted you can handle.)

Couple of notes about the expansion video below:

  • 3 years of planning are finally culminating
  • The building isn’t just a space, it has been designed to be architecturally significant.
  • The new tanks are proprietary technology, designed in Kalamazoo
  • In 2002, they produced 28,000 barrels.  (868,000 gallons)
  • 2011, 180,000 barrels (5,580,000 gallons)
  • The new brewhouse at max can make 500,000 barrels. (15,500,000 gallons)
John Mallet describes the design as “a primal, geometric form.”

More Details Surrounding Barrel Aged Hunahpu Day

BSJ will be on site on Saturday covering Barrel Aged Hunahpu day.

Cigar City has posted a couple of updates surrounding the big day:

Per CC:

In the previous blog entry we talked about all the details for the upcoming BA Hunahpu’s Release this Saturday. A few updates/corrections:

– We said we’ll release Humidor Series Imperial Stout if the labels came through. Well, they didn’t come through, so we’ll have to push that bottle release back to another date! Sorry everyone.

– The 4th line (or “Black” line, as you will come to know it on Saturday) will feature sales of Virgin Oak Hunahpu’s growlers as well as bottles of Rum barrel-aged Big Sound and Bourbon barrel-aged Big Sound. You can buy all three of them at the same time, only one bottle per beer, though.

– Because that’s not going to be bottled, we won’t keg it either to avoid taking up too much bright tank space, so we’re also not going to have it on tap. However, in its place in the tasting room will be Virgin Oak Barrel-aged Hunahpu’s, being tapped at 11am with all the other special beers.

– There will be no tours during the event. It’s just going to be way too hectic in there, and everyone on staff will be very busy.

– There are considerably less growlers available of Virgin Hunahpu’s than bottles of Rum or Bourbon Hunahpu’s.

– We won’t have wristbands or bracelets or anything, but we will have a numbering system to be revealed the day of the release. We’re trying to make this as fair as possible for everyone!

– There will be no growler fills in the tasting room of any kind from 11am – 4pm. The reason is because it will simply be mayhem for the bartenders just to pour drinks and filling growlers take up a lot of time. If you’re looking to get growlers for football games, tailgating, etc., we advise you come Friday night to get them filled. We apologize if that causes any inconvenience!

Odell Brewing’s Bourbon Barrel Stout returns 9/24/11.   This years edition has new artwork, aged in new bourbon barrels.  (The artwork is an homage to the barrels…)

We tweaked the process this year, to meet and maintain our highest quality standard,” said Brent Cordle, brewer and barrel aging manager for Odell Brewing. “We selected Woodford Reserve barrels for the 2011 batch, and the freshly emptied barrels were immediately shipped to us cold which preserved the integrity of the barrel and the beautiful bourbon flavor.”

Flavor.
Bourbon Barrel Stout has notes of sweet milk chocolate, smooth vanilla and roasted coffee beans. Upon barrel aging, traces of oak and caramel come forward. The bourbon barrels have a remarkable effect on the beer. In turn, the beer has a remarkable effect on the senses.

Odell Brewing will mark the return with a celebration on September 24th in the brewery’s tap room. Guests can enjoy samples of the beer, local food truck fare as well as live music by the Buzz Brothers band from 3:30-5:30 p.m.

Elysian Teams Up With Seattle Music Venue

Elysian Brewing has teamed up with Triple Door, a live music venue in Seattle, Washington to create a private label craft beer.  The beer is called Triple Door Backstage Ale – a pale ale.

This recipe is inspired by the menu at Triple Door, described as”award-winning and fiercely authentic Pan-Asian dishes of Wild Ginger.”

“When we initially developed the concept of a private label craft beer with the team from The Elysian Brewing Company, we were very excited about the prospect of creating our very own craft beer recipe that could perfectly suit the flavors found in our cuisine,” said Jason Lock, general manager of The Triple Door. “We take great pride in crafting our cocktail, wine and beer offerings to provide our guests a variety of options that pair well with our menu — this provides the ultimate opportunity to deliver on this goal.”

Triple Door Pale is full of Pacific northwest hops (tropical, citrus notes) with juniper for complexity.  For a little bit of Asian beer-flair, Sorachi Ace was used also.  Pints will run $5.50. [PressRelease]

Abita Celebrates 25 Years With Vanilla Doubledog

After a short delay (due to bottle producer) Abita Brewing’s 25 Anniversary beer Vanilla Double Dog is upon us.  Per the press release:

Introducing 25th Anniversary Vanilla Doubledog

To mark this wonderful milestone, Abita Brewing Company has created a special commemorative brew, 25th Anniversary Vanilla Doubledog. The robust dark ale has flavors of chocolate, toffee and vanilla. It’s brewed with generous amounts of pale, caramel and chocolate malts and Willamette hops. Whole natural vanilla beans are added during the aging process. 25th Anniversary Vanilla Doubledog is packaged in a commemorative, 22-ounce bottle illustrated with a design inspired by classic New Orleans wrought iron. This Doubledog brew is a tribute to Abita’s Turbodog, which was originally created as an anniversary beer in 1989. Today, Turbodog is an Abita Flagship brew and sold year-round.

This year will be a big year for Abita.  The brewery is on track to ship more than 130,000 barrels (just over 4 million gallons)

From a humble beginning of just 1,500 barrels of beer in 1986, brewing for Abita should exceed 130,000 barrels in 2011. Abita Golden and Amber were the original beers produced by Louisiana’s first craft brewery. Now the Abita Brewing Company produces seven year-round flagship brews, five seasonal beers, three Harvest brews, four Big Beers, a draft-only series of Select beers and a root beer all from a state-of-the-art brewing complex.
