Courage Makes A Comeback

The Great American Beer Festival is known for beer rarities and brand new debuts each year.  This year, just as things got into full swing in Denver Friday afternoon a sort of combonation of the two happened at Falling Rock Tap House.   Excitement was mounting as a once iconic beer was making a comeback.

The beer of the hour was Courage Imperial Russian Stout.  This beer dates back to the 1800’s when it was made by Thrale’s Anchor Brewery in London for Catherine II of Russia.  The high alcohol content, 10% ABV, was necessary to keep the beer from freezing during shipping.  The hops were used to maintain quality.

The beer then changed hands several times including Barclay Perkins and then eventually Courage in the 1950’s.  It was continuously brewed and aged through all owners.  Courage Brewery closed in 1982 – but never fear, the brew was still made under new ownership until 1993, when sadly, the brewing of this Imperial Russian Stout was stopped completely.

In 2007, Courage was bought by Wells and YoungWells and Young’s head brewer, Jim Robertson, just so happened to be  one of the last people to brew the stout when it was still in production.  With a little nudging from beer journalist Melissa Cole, he decided to brew the beer again and started aging it in May.

Falling Rock Tap House’s guests on Friday were the first to sample this beer since the early 90’s on Friday.  Upon popping the bottle open, both Jim and Melissa said a few words before sipping the 10% ABV Imperial Russian Stout.  Melissa eloquently concluded by saying “It’s like sex in a fucking glass.”

Although not easy to brew on newer brewing systems because of the amounts of raw ingredients, the beer will now be made once anually.  This year only 1,000 cases will make it to the US, so swing by Falling Rock Tap House before it’s gone!  It will age well for up to 13 years in the bottle.

Well’s & Young’s Buys McEwan’s and Youngers

For those beer business lovers, this one’s for you….

The UK’s largest independent family brewery, Wells and Young’s, has purchased two iconic Scottish beer brands – McEwan’s and Younger’s – from Heineken UK.

The deal, which is worldwide was agreed today (4th October), provides the Bedford-based brewer with an unrivalled range of premium beers and propels Wells and Young’s into the top three premium ale brewers in the UK.

Nigel McNally, Managing Director of Wells and Young’s says: “This is a significant and major acquisition, and secures the future for the much loved McEwan’s and Younger’s brands.

“We are hugely excited about these fantastic Scottish ales joining our stable, they bring a wealth of opportunities to our business which we will realise through brand investment, innovation and exploiting export potential. We are committed to maintaining the rich Scottish heritage of the brands. We will continue brewing McEwan’s draught ales at the historic Caledonian Brewery and we will set up a small Scottish office to support the brands and our range of beers.”

Stefan Orlowski, Managing Director for Heineken UK added: “We are delighted to have reached this agreement with Wells and Young’s. We have a long term and valued relationship with them and they have already demonstrated that they can bring their expertise and investment to brands such as Courage. We know that the McEwan’s and Younger’s ales will complement their portfolio perfectly.”

In addition to buying McEwan’s and Younger’s, Wells and Young’s has also bought the remaining 17% of the Courage beer brands from Heineken, following a deal in January 2007.

Sam Adams Brewing The American Dream Winners

Samuel Adams has announced the winners of it’s The Samuel Adams Brewing the American Dream program that was instated to give small business owners the tools that they need to succeed — or as some may call it, realize the American Dream.  The first ever recipients were Jim Woods of MateVeza out of San Francisco, CA and Chris Spinelli & Jon Mervine of Roc Brewing Co out of Rochester, NY.  They will travel to Samuel Adams in Boston, MA to meet with employees about various topics including brewing and business.  The goal of the program is to help start up brewers overcome the same challenges that Jim Koch faced as he was starting Sam Adams.

Jim Koch never forgot the hurdles that he faced in the beginning.  After being turned down for several loans, he brewed his first batch of Boston Lager in his kitchen, bottled it, and hand delivered it.  Jim will mentor Jim, Chris, and Jon as they begin to grow their breweries through this Experienceship.  He will provide assistance in not only the brewing side of things but also the business side — ie. marketing, labeling, distribution, creative, legal, etc.  All parties involved are very excited about the program.  Jim Woods of MateVeza said, . “The greatest thing about the craft beer movement is the people behind it. This is a complicated industry, and gaining the tools and expertise necessary to bring MateVeza to the masses is truly a dream come true.”
