Upright Brewing (Portland, OR) will be releasing Fantasia this Friday January 20th. It’s built off a lambic backbone, with no spontaneous fermentation. It has, however, spent its entire life in oak. The beer never touched stainless steel.
There were eight oak barrels used from four different wineries. Fantasia was kept company in those oak barrels by 800 pounds of fresh peaches from Baird family orchards normally found at Portland, OR area farmer’s markets. The whole fresh peaches were added to the extra long boil. At completion of the boil the beer and fruit along with plenty of barley malt, aged hops, saison yeasts, lactobacillus and brettanomyces were poured into the oak barrels ready for fermentation.
Once fermentation slowed, each barrel was topped with Upright’s house farmhouse wheat beer Four and Tokay d’ Portland, a small batch barrel-aged strong ale. Seven of the eight barrels were then blended and bottled in 750ml champagne style bottles and wax dipped. After a bit of bottle conditioning, Fantasia is ready to be enjoyed.
Fantasia is expected to age for up to two years and next year’s batch has already been brewed. Bottles will go on sale at the brewery on Friday 1/20 at 4:30pm with a 1 case per person limit. $20/bottle and $225/case. The peachy brew will also be available on draft at the brewery that day.
This is your official heads up. Decatur Beer Fest will be on October 2oth, 2012. That means that Atlanta Beer Week will most likely the week leading up to this date. More announcements on that to follow.
Steve Hnidy, founder of Brooklyn Brewing, has been named Keynote Speaker for this years Craft Brewer’s Conference in San Diego, California. The conference is May 2-5, 2011.
Press Release:
Keynote speaker Steve Hindy will kick off the 2012 Craft Brewers Conference (CBC) in San Diego, Calif. Nearly 4,000 industry professionals will gather for four days of education and networking, May 2-5 at the Town and Country Resort. With his experience ranging from international journalism to craft beer pioneering, Hindy is expected to inspire attendees with a unique perspective.
Hindy spent the late 1970s and early 1980s in the Middle East as an Associated Press correspondent. His early work was not directly related to his interest in beer. In fact, he sometimes found himself in countries that prohibited alcohol according to strict Islamic law. Nevertheless, he discovered a love for flavorful beer and homebrewing, thanks to a few foreign diplomats who couldn’t live without their favorite beers.
In 1984, Hindy and his neighbor, Tom Potter, founded Brooklyn Brewery, seeking to rebuild the robust brewing culture that once existed in New York’s German immigrant communities. Over the last three decades, Steve built the brewery into a well-recognized brand, overcoming the challenges of distribution, a small brewing facility, skeptical retailers and, more recently, a major brewery expansion. He also authored Beer School with Potter, a memoir of their stories and lessons from 20 years of adventure with Brooklyn Brewery.
Beyond his role at Brooklyn Brewery, Hindy is active in his local community and the broader craft beer community. He serves on the Governor’s Economic Development Council and Brooklyn’s Prospect Park Alliance, and founded the Open Space Alliance for North Brooklyn. Within his industry, he serves on the Brewers Association (BA) board of directors and has testified before Congress to emphasize the importance of self-distribution laws. Hindy was awarded the 2010 F.X. Matt Defense of the Industry Award to recognize his efforts in government affairs.
“Steve is an industry pioneer,” explains BA Director Paul Gatza, “and he has an interesting background as a foreign correspondent, author and entrepreneur. In a time of uncertainty in the brewing industry, he had the vision to establish a brewery in an area with a wonderful brewing heritage, which is now beloved by American beer drinkers.”
In his keynote address, Hindy is anticipated to discuss his passion for beer during dangerous times as a foreign correspondent and why he chose to start a brewery in Brooklyn, especially at a time when there was no real roadmap for brewing entrepreneurs. He’ll also relate lessons learned along the way, the decision to expand in Brooklyn, as well as the importance of strong relationships with local, state and federal legislators.

Firestone Walker’s805 Ale celebrates all things local. 805 is the area code that serves the brewery’s home of Paso Robles, California. 805 split off of the Los Angeles area code in 1957.
What will 805 might be you might ask? Literally as I’m writing this, the info shows up on my desk.
Presser:
“805” tap handles will be showing up in bars across the 805 area code.
The Central Coast brewery, Firestone Walker, which has been making a version of the beer available in its pub for several years, brews the blonde ale.
“We had been making this beer for a while and you can find it in a few bars, usually given a unique name by one of the locals… but then people learned that it was ours and kept asking for us to release it,” said David Walker, co-owner of the brewery. “So we decided to listen to them, the first step was to christen the beer ‘the 805’, and to make it available widely in bars with an 805 area code. Next we’ll release bottles in the spring on the Central Coast simply trying to keep it local.”
Those that have tried 805 before, recognize it by its golden color, light and crisp carbonation and slightly sweet aroma. If you’re new to the beer you’ll find that the honey flavor is noticeable on the palate but not overpowering, making this a clean, sessionable Ale that is the perfect fit for after surfing, hiking or just a hot day in Paso Robles.
The beer was a recipient of a bronze medal at the European Beer Star Awards in 2010, which has lent it a reputation in beer circles as well as being a favorite with Central Coast locals.
Firestone Walker Brewing Company was founded in 1996 and is located in Paso Robles, Ca. The brewery prides itself in producing the world’s finest pale ales to a regional market. Firestone is the only brewery to be awarded Best Mid-sized Brewery honors three times at the 2003, 2007 and 2011 Great American Beer Festivals as well as World Beer Cup Champion for a Mid-sized Brewery at the 2004, 2006 and 2010 World Beer Cup competitions.
Availability: Draft only now, 12oz bottles later in 2012.
