Dogfish Head Birra Etrusca Bronze Arrives in December

Joining Dogfish Head Brewery’s Ancient Ale Series is Birra Etrusca Bronze. Beer truly meets history in this release, as Sam Calagione traveled to Rome, Italy to meet with molecular archaeologist Dr. Pat Mc Govern. Joining the duo is Leo DeVencenzo of Birra del Borgo and Teo Musso of Baladin. The group analyzed drinking vessels found in 2,800-year-old Etruscan tombs. Wouldn’t you know it? Another ancient culture has a love of beer. If anyone is going to remake it, you know Dogfish Head will.

A wide range of ingredients are used in Birra Etrusca. The backbone is two-row malted barley and an heirloom Italian wheat. Additions include hazelnut flour, pomegranates, Italian chestnut honey, Delaware wildflower honey and clover honey. Etrusca is bittered with gentian root and Ethiopian myrrh resin.

Birra del Borgo, Birra Baladin and Dogfish Head will release a version of Etrusca. In an interesting twist, each brewery will ferment the beer in a traditional vessel. Dogfish Head will use bronze, Baladin in wood, and Birra del Borgo will use terra cotta. The flavor profiles will be slightly different for each. No word of the Italian editions being released in the states.

Style:         (w/ Hazelnut flour, Pomegranates, Italian Chestnut Honey, Delaware Wildflower Honey, Gentian Root, Ethiopian Myrrh)

Craggie Brewing To Close on December 1st

This morning, Craggie Brewing (Asheville, NC) announced they will be closing their doors on December 1, 2012. Even though Craggie will close its doors, another brewery may immediately rise in their current space.  The statement is found below…

Craggie Brewing Company regrets to announce that after three years we will be closing our doors December 1st.

We strived to prosper in the face of limited funds, but ultimately could not reach profitability. We are very proud of our staff, DJ McCready, Luke Holgate, Nick Badieh Alwon-Mount, Zaq Suarez, Zach Dier, and Brandon, and customers and want to thank you for your loyalty through the highs and the lows this operation.

Although Craggie will be closing, the facility at 197 Hilliard Avenue will still be in use. Negotiations are currently being made for a new brewery to take over the space and begin its own brewing journey. It will be retaining two of Craggie’s own employees and is wished the best of luck in its endeavors. You, our friends and colleagues, are what make Beer City what it is, and we are glad to know you!

Farmhouse Ale in a Can: 21st Amendment Sneak Attack Saison

21st Amendment Sneak Attack Saison

A new seasonal on the horizon for 21st Amendment Brewery (San Francisco, CA) – Sneak Attack Saison. Note the drunk Washington crossing the Delaware references in the label. The first thing that strikes me about Sneak Attack is how few saison/farmhouse ales there are on the American beer market in cans.  Brewery Vivant, Surly Brewing, and Hillard’s (Seattle, WA) immediately come to mind.

Style: Saison/Farmhouse Ale (w/ Cardamom)
Availability: 12 oz cans Arrival: TBA
