Widmer Brothers Introduces Kill Devil Brown Ale (PR)

PORTLAND, OR – Widmer Brothers Brewing has released Kill Devil Brown Ale, the sixth beer in the brewery’s limited-edition Brothers’ Reserve series, which showcases the brewery’s commitment to innovation and creativity in craft brewing. The Brothers’ Reserve beers are one-of-a-kind, and each run is limited, so once they’re gone, they’re gone forever. Kill Devil Brown Ale, the most limited release of the Brothers’ Reserve beers to date, is available in very limited quantities on draught and in 22-ounce bottles at select retailers nationwide.

“Kill Devil Brown Ale features ingredients traditionally used by Caribbean distillers,” said Kurt Widmer, co-founder of Widmer Brothers Brewing. “It’s brewed with palm sugar and molasses and aged in Puerto Rican rum barrels. This is truly a one-of-a-kind beer, and we’re proud to include Kill Devil Brown Ale in our Brothers’ Reserve series.”

“Our barrel aged releases to date have been really well received by craft beer enthusiasts,” said Widmer Brothers brewer Doug Rehberg, “and we wanted to continue experimenting with barrel aging. We sourced the rum barrels used for Kill Devil from Distilería Serrallés, a family-owned distillery in Puerto Rico that has been making rum since 1865. Rum is often made from molasses, and we used two different grades — sweet Barbados and blackstrap — in our brewing process, along with granulated coconut palm sugar. The Calypso hops also provide tropical flavors. The end result is a big brown ale — a little malty and slightly sweet, with plenty of alcohol to cut that and a nice strong hop bitterness.”

About Kill Devil Brown Ale

The complex flavors of Kill Devil Brown Ale include the toasted sugar, sweet Barbados and blackstrap molasses, along with black licorice and blackened toffee, while the palm sugars add notes of subtle sweetness. As the beer conditions in Puerto Rican rum barrels, the vanilla and subtle oak flavors and aromas develop and integrate with the Calypso hops’ soft tropical and stone-fruit aromas.

About Widmer Brothers Brewing:

What started as a dream for two ordinary brothers who just loved beer has now become a reality for two ordinary brothers who still just love beer. Kurt and Rob Widmer helped lead the Pacific Northwest craft beer movement in 1984 when, in their twenties, they dreamed of brewing unique interpretations of traditional beer styles. In 1986, Widmer Brothers Brewing introduced the first American-style Hefeweizen; today, the unfiltered cloudy beer is the company’s signature brew and one of the best-selling wheat beers in the country. Based in Portland, Ore., the brewery currently brews a variety of beers, including its Brothers’ Reserve Series, Alchemy Project, Drifter Pale Ale, Nelson Imperial IPA, Rotator IPA Series, Drop Top Amber Ale and Pitch Black IPA.
