Quick look at Deschutes Brewing’s Jubelale 2011.  Each year, this winter warmer gets a new label.  Released seasonally in October though December.

A dark, malty celebration ale with layered flavors and beautifully balanced hopping. Jubelale pours deep garnet in color, medium bodied, with notes of chicory, earth, spice and fruit. To beer lovers, it’s like Yule fire and family.

6.7% ABV, 60 IBUs

More Brrrbon For 2011

Widmer Brrrbon 2011

You saw it again last year, you’ll see it again this year.  Widmer Brother’s Brrrbon- is Brrr,  a winter warmer aged in bourbon barrels.  Couple of changes though, the beer appears to be part of the “Alchemy Project.”  Interestingly, both Brrr & Brrrbon use Alchemy hops.  Making the assumption they are related.  Awesome name to what sounds to be a new series by Widmer.

This smooth, chilly winter warmer goes through a secondary fermentation as it ages in Kentucky bourbon barrels.  After months of maturation in the barrels the brew is allow a tertiary fermentation for final conditioning before release.

Style: Winter Warmer (barrel aged)
Hops: Alchemy for bittering, Simcoe & Cascade for aroma
Malts: 2-Row Pale, Carapils, Caramel 10-L, Caramel 80 L, Dark Chocolate

Taste Expectations: Earthy flavors mix with vanilla bourbon & oak.  It’s a sipper, but one you can’t put own.
Arrival: Early Winter, 2011

2011 will mark the 37th release of Anchor Brewing’s “Our Special Ale” aka Anchor Christmas.  Every year the beer tastes a little different,& the label features a different tree.  Now time to tree geek out for a minute. This year’s feature- the Pinus longaeva is known as the Great Basin Bristlecone Pine tree.  The tree is found in the southwestern part of the United States, and has quite a long life span.  Methuselah, one of the members of this species is thought to be the oldest living non-clonal organism on planet earth.

Our Special Ale hits shelves this year in November.

NEW RELEASE: Baird Beer Jubilation Ale

Someone said to me yesterday – Japanese Christmas Beer? My reply was – of course! Baird Beer was founded in 2000 in Numazu, Japan by the husband & wife team of Bryan and Sayuri Baird.  Their approach to craft brewing is simple.  Balance + Complexity = Character.  I tend to agree.

Commercial Description:
This celebratory ale is brewed with freshly picked Japanese figs and cinnamon twigs. Rich and opulent, it is emblematic of the good cheer and renewed energy with which Japanese celebrate the coming of each New Year.

Style: Winter Warmer

SEASONAL: Rogue Mogul Madness

This  winter ale is back for another run in 2010, this time with a shiny new medal.  Mogul Madness took gold in the 2010 World Beer Championships.  Mogul has been brewed continuously since 1991.

Commercial Description:
Small batches of seasonal beers were traditionally brewed in Europe during the 19th century. Breweries made darker brews, brews with high alcohol content and festive taste. Mogul is a strong ale, darker in color than other pale ales and more assertively hopped-the John Maier trademark

Style: Winter Warmer
Hops: Saaz, Columbus, Chinook, Rogue Micro Hopyard Revolution, Rebel, Freedom Hop
Malts: Great Western 2-Row, Maier Munich, Crystal 135/165, Chocolate Malts and Rogue Micro Barley Farm DareTM Malts
Yeast: Pacman

Rogue’s Taste Expectations: Hoppy, caramel aroma, dark burgundy in color with an off white head. Intense flavors of citrus hops, and complex notes of nuts, berries and mocha. It finishes long and lingers for at least 15 seconds.
