Carolina Bauernhaus 18 Mile Red Grand Cru bottles debuted this week

Carolina Bauernhaus 18 Mile Red Grand Cru

Carolina Bauernhaus 18 Mile Red Grand Cru bottles will be available starting this week. The Anderson, South Carolina based brewery debuted their first bottles in June.

Carolina Bauernhaus 18 Mile Red Grand Cru is the brewery’s Belgian-style red sour ale, brewed with rye malt, and aged for six months in Tempranillo barrels. The souring Lactobacillus bacteria was isolated from opuntia fruit by SouthYeast Labs in La France, South Carolina.

This is a sour red ale brewed with NC heirloom rye malt fermented and aged for six months in a single regional wine barrel. This ale has a bright acidity and is filled with dark fruit notes and an oaky character. The acidity is drawn from a strain of native lactobacillus, a blend of local yeasts, and a pair of Brettanomyces strains.

22 ounce bottles will be on sale in the brewery’s tap room starting August, 23rd.

Style: American Wild/Sour Ale (Wine Barrel Aged)
Availability: 22oz Bottles, Draft. (Tap room)

Chardonnay meets monkey in Victory Sour Monkey Remix

Victory Sour Monkey Remix

Just as Victory Sour Monkey hits shelves again for the second time Victory Sour Monkey Remix surfaces, a barrel aged edition of the sour/wild ale.

The base beer for this is the very well known Victory Golden Monkey, the brewery’s Belgian-style tripel ale, brewed with Westmalle yeast. Victory Sour Monkey takes shape thanks to extended fermentation using Brettanomyces and Lactobacillus (hitting shelves again now).

Victory Sour Monkey Remix takes things a step further with Chardonnay barrel-aging.

Now usually we don’t do this, but sometimes an instant classic is just begging for a Remix. Chardonnay barrel aging puts a whole new spin on our already tastefully twisted Sour Monkey, with notes of vanilla and oak, rounding out its lemony tart tang and dry finish. Experience this exclusive, next level evolution of our beloved Golden Monkey for yourself.

Victory Sour Monkey Remix will be a 750 milliliter bottle conditioned release. The brewery has not officially announced this beer.

Style: American Wild Ale (Chardonnay Barrel Aged)
Availability: 750ml Bottles
Debut: TBA

Orpheus Even the Furies Wept is two beers, lots of barrels

Orpheus Even the Furies Wept 3

Orpheus Even the Furies Wept, a new American wild ale, debuts on August 10th.

This new wild ale is actually a blend of two different beers. Per Jason Pellet, Orpheus brewer and president, the first five barrels that were filled at the brewery are called “Tribute Barrels”. Each Cabernet barrel was individually inoculated with the yeast dregs from five select breweries. A Belgian-style pale ale was added to each of them.

RELATED: Orpheus Coffee Minotaur

In the case of Orpheus Even the Furies Wept, Pellet chose three barrels, with yeast from breweries Fantome, Drie Fonteinen, and Russian River. T

he second beer is a Brettanomyces heavy saison, aged in Sauternes barrels.  Total aging time for the beer in barrels is 18 months.

The story of Orpheus is a story of rebirth, first in his journey into and out of Hades, and finally in the transmigration of his soul not into the body of a swan. We pay tribute to this rebirth with every beer we put into barrels, to be transformed by its time in the wood and reborn as something new.

Orpheus Even the Furies Wept will be available starting August 10th at the brewery, with limited distribution to follow shortly after. This is the brewery’s first cork & caged offering.

Style: American Wild Ale (Wine Barrel Aged)
Availability: 750ml Bottles, Corked & Caged. Draft.

Odell Crossover Sour Blonde looks to debut in September

Odell Crossover Sour Blonde

Odell Crossover Sour Blonde looks to join the brewery’s sour and wild lineup in the near future.

In our personal experience, if you want to get a wine person to like beer, let them try a wine barrel aged beer, or a sour ale. Odell Crossover Sour Blonde is both. A sour ale aged in a white wine barrel. The base blonde beer has been aged in both chardonnay and sauvignon blanc barrels.

We’re in a relentless search for new ways to influence the character of our beer. Crossover is our tribute to the complex partnership between two of the most prolific and ancient fermented beverages – beer and wine. We brewed a sour blonde ale and aged it in chardonnay and sauvignon blanc barrels to introduce notes of tropical fruit, elderflower, and subtle oak finish. The result of the unique combination is a dry, effervescent beer balanced with hints of pear, tart sourness, and light funk.

Odell Crossover Sour Blonde Ale is a 750 milliliter bottle potential, tentatively scheduled for September.

Style: American Wild/Sour Ale (Wine Barrel Aged)
Availability: 750ml Bottles
Debut: September, 2016

Wicked Weed Genesis returns after a year

Wicked Weed Genesis

Wicked Weed Genesis has returned to the Asheville, North Carolina brewery’s lineup. It has been about a year since the beer was last released.

Over 200 pounds of papaya, mango, guava, and pineapple are used to create Wicked Weed Genesis, which is aged in white wine barrels 6-12 months.

In the first days, everything was black, barren, void of meaning. Life hid in the shadows and was kept at bay by nothingness. In the world’s stillest moment, a thunderous crack divided the skies. From the parched rock, water burgeoned forth, spilled over the black mountains and the Spirit Iyapa’s presence was imparted. What began as a whisper turned to a roar of life. Cell by cell, plant by plant, a vibrant world emerged.

Wicked Weed Genesis is a 500 milliliter bottle release. Available at both brewery locations, with limited distribution to follow.

Style: American Wild Ale (w/ Papaya, Pineapple, Guava, MangoWine Barrel Aged)
Availability: 500ml Bottles, Draft. Limited.
