CASK ALERT: Terrapin Pumpkinfest

Tapping Friday , October 1st is Terrapin’s newest seasonal – Pumpkinfest.

Quick Description:
Brewed with a mix of Vienna and Munich malts, and Vanguard and Hallertau hops. Spike Buckhowski (Head Brewer/ Co-founder) chose these particular hops, because they have a more bitter character and less aroma. In addition to these malts/hops, Spike whipped up a whirlpool of spices, including ginger, allspice, and ground clove. (Starting to sound like pumpkin pie?) The spices are heated, but not boiled. Boiling the spices raises the potential for unwanted flavors to enter into the brew. The coup de grace of this fest ale is the 1 lb of pumpkin used per barrel.

NEW RELEASE: Heavy Seas “Great’er Pumpkin”

Leave it to Hugh Sisson and his talented and creative team of brewers to keep pushing forward.  The Mutiny Fleet bomber series is very popular, and the newest release is sure to follow suit.  The Great’er Pumpkin pushes the already popular Great Pumpkin release to a bigger and bolder level by aging the beer in bourbon barrels.  A pumpkin beer in bourbon!  I got to taste it last year at Brick Store Pub with Hugh Sisson and I was nothing short of impressed.

Commerical Description:
The Mutiny Fleet was “berthed” by Heavy Seas brewers who were discovered secretlybrewing small batches of big beers to amuse the palates of their fellow crew.  Since most secrets are best kept bottled up, we’re bringing you these big flavor extrAARGHdinary brew in 22oz bombers. From the haunted wood emerges the Great’er Pumpkin of them all!

Taste Expectations: Vanilla! The bourbon barrel aging really shines through.  Pumpkin and spice is subtle and intact.  Pumpkin & bourbon go well together.

Availability: 22oz Bombers.  Rare draft offerings. Fewer than 500 cases and less than 100 barrels produced. Fall Seasonal.

Terrapin Pumpkinfest Arrives!

The newest Terrapin seasonal has arrived!  Pumpkinfest debuted last year as a part of Terrapin’s Side Project bomber series.  In it’s sophomore release — this pumpkin beer gets promoted to seasonal.

If you don’t know Terrapin’s head brewer Spike Buckowski, Spike favors German brewing styles and ingredients.  In the recent collaboration “Monstre Rouge” brewed with Belgian brewery De Proef you’ll find extra rye malt.  Rye malt is a favored ingredient in German style Roggenbier.  Pumpkinfest is a hybrid brew of a German oktoberfest style lager, and pumpkin ale.

Food Pairings: Jerk Chicken & Sweet potato fries.  Thanksgiving dinner, aged gouda & jalapeno jack cheeses.

Availability: 12oz/6pks, Draft. Seasonal, following Sunray each year.

SEASONAL RETURN: Dogfish Punkin

I know a lot of people have been excited this pumpkin beer is coming back – Dogfish Punkin.

Dogfish‘s story on this seasonal favorite:

“A full-bodied brown ale with smooth hints of pumpkin and brown sugar. We brew our Punkin Ale with pumpkin meat, organic brown sugar and spices. This is the perfect beer to warm-up with, as the season cools.

Punkin Ale is named after a locally-famous and seriously off-centered event here in southern Delaware – Punkin Chunkin (check out some of these Discovery Channel videosof Punkin Chunkin, you gotta see it to believe it!). In fact, Punkin Ale made it’s debut as it claimed First Prize in the 1994 Punkin Chunkin Recipe Conest – yes, that was a full 6 months before we even opened our doors for business. Punkin Chunkin has grown in size and scale with pumpkins now being hurled more than 4,000 feet through the air! If you come down to see if for yourself – come by and visit us.

Since then, we’ve brewed Punkin Ale each and every fall. It is released right around September first each year. When you find it, grab some extra because it’s usually gone by Thanksgiving.”

Taste Expectations: Pumpkin flavors, light malts, & spices.  Some cinnamon in the finish.  Great beer for fall, Halloween, Thanksgiving, football, HOCKEY 🙂

Food Pairings: Turkey, Roasted Duck, Lamb, Stuffing, Dessert Dumplings

Availability: 12oz/4 pks.  Draft.  September – November, Seasonally.  Note: usually gone before Halloween.
