Pumpkin meets habanero in New Belgium Atomic Pumpkin

New Belgium Atomic Pumpkin

Looking to make fall a little more spicy for a second time is New Belgium Atomic Pumpkin. A pumpkin beer that’s just a little different from the coming onslaught of pumpkin-themed everything.

Now, not every pumpkin beer is the same. Especially if it’s brewed with habanero peppers. New Belgium Atomic Pumpkin starts sweet, with a touch of Saigon cinnamon, and finishes with a kick of peppery heat. Think pumpkin pie with a little burn.

“Atomic Pumpkin is a twist on pumpkin ale for beer drinkers who like some heat. Classic fall flavors like pumpkin pie and cinnamon offer a sweet counterpart to the fiery peppers, making it a great, full-flavored beer for the crisp autumn weather.” Bryan Simpson, public relations director

New Belgium Atomic Pumpkin is a part of the growing line of Voodoo Ranger Series releases. Look for it in August in 12-ounce bottles and draft.

Style: Pumpkin Beer (w/ Cinnamon. Habanero.)
Hops: Nugget
Malts: Pale Mena, Pale Rahr, Caramel, Munich
Availability: 12oz Bottles, Draft. Aug-Oct

Like pumpkin pie served with a cup of coffee. Southern Tier Cold Press Coffee Pumking debuts

Southern Tier Cold Press Pumking bottles

Southern Tier Cold Press Coffee Pumking, a variant of one of the most well-known pumpkin beers, has started hitting shelves.

The mere mention of Pumking will typically get a strong “love it” or “hate it” reaction. Either way, it’s hard to doubt this pumpkin beer has made quite an impression on the beer scene. In addition to this coffee variant, Rum Barrel Pumking is also a part of the fall lineup.

Southern Tier Cold Press Coffee Pumking is created in a few steps. First, the brewery mashed in the grains at a higher temperature in order to leave a little residual sweetness to pair better with the coffee flavor.

Once fermentation was completed the beer was cold crashed to 32 degrees, and 150 pounds of cold pressed coffee from local roaster Stedman’s was added. Incidentally, the brewery pressed the coffee themselves.

In the end, the coffee adds nutty and cocoa flavors to Pumking’s strong pumpkin and pie crust flavors. Most folks have tried the base beer, Pumking – easily one of the boldest pumpkin beers out there. The coffee presence is strong but really strikes a balance with the pumpkin flavors, almost muting them a bit. Cold Press Pumking truly is pumpkin pie served with a cup of coffee.

Due to the infusion, this beer does have traces of caffeine.

Southern Tier Cold Press Coffee Pumking is a limited draft and 12-ounce bottle offering.

Style: Pumpkin Beer (w/ Coffee)
Availability: 12oz Bottles, Draft.
Release: September 2017

Three different barrels & a little crazy: Hi-Wire Sour Pumpkin Ale

Hi-Wire Sour Pumpkin Ale

Hi-Wire Sour Pumpkin Ale is all over the flavor map. That’s a good thing. There’s a lot going on in this beer.

As fall creeps in, Asheville, North Carolina based Hi-Wire Brewing has released Sour Pumpkin Ale. Put the pumpkin spiced latte down because things are about to get a little weird.

After spending time wandering around local Rayburn Farm, Hi-Wire was struck with the idea of sourcing a beer from a single farm source. Sure, this is a pumpkin ale so you’re probably thinking something with pumpkins, cinnamon, and cloves. Make it taste like pie and ship it, right? Wrong.

Let’s talk pre-barrel. The base beer spent time in stainless steel tanks, with roasted delicata pumpkins, cinnamon basil, and blue ginger. Blue ginger is a Hawaiian variety known for its superior flavor. Cinnamon basil is also called Mexican spice basil. Methyl cinnamate found in the cultivar gives off flavors of the cinnamon spice when the leaves are crushed.

If this beer is already sounding unique, Hi-Wire isn’t done yet. After three months in stainless steel, the beer was split into rum, whiskey, and red wine barrels for six months, then blended back again. There’s nothing “basic” about this creation.

At this point, it is downright impossible to use something as simple as “pie” to describe Hi-Wire Sour Pumpkin Ale. It just doesn’t fit. Sour Pumpkin is aggressively sour as you dive in, melding into a light wash of ginger and cinnamon. As the beer warms, the blend of barrels are fighting for palate domination. Honestly, we think the rum won. This is no simple wild ale, with typical flavors. Everything about this beer is unpredictable in the best of ways. Speaking in the spirit of Hi-Wire’s hometown of Asheville, “Keep Fall Weird.”

Hi-Wire Sour Pumpkin Ale is a limited,  375-milliliter bottle release. Not for the faint of heart (or palate).

Style: American Wild/Sour Alehttps://beerstreetjournal.com/tag/american-wild-ales/ (w/ Pumpkin. Blue Ginger. Cinnamon Basil. Barrel Aged. Whiskey. Red Wine. Rum.)
Availability: 375ml Bottles
Debut: 9/2/17

A fan favorite gets barrel-aged. Saint Arnold Bourbon Pumpkinator is coming this fall

Saint Arnold Bourbon Pumpkinator

A great seasonal is about get a little better, thanks to some time spent in oak. Saint Arnold Bourbon Pumpkinator is coming this fall.

The brewery’s seasonal, single batch, pumpkin beer has a cult following among their fan base. It got its start as the ninth release the brewery’s Divine Reserve Series. The brewing team’s pumpkin beer approach is an imperial pumpkin stout, brewed with black and caramel malts, plus pumpkin, molasses, brown sugar, and spices. This “pie in a bottle” offering is the most expensive beer Saint Arnold has brewed.

In 2017, the Houston, Texas brewery is kicking the seasonal up a notch, with Saint Arnold Bourbon Pumpkinator.

As Bishop of Metz, Saint Arnold spent his life warning of the dangers of drinking water and extolling the virtues of beer. During his funeral, his pallbearers stopped to quench their thirst, but they only had one mug to share among them. Then a miracle happened. The mug never ran dry, and all the mourners we satisfied.

Saint Arnold has begun teasing the release of this barrel-aged offering, but no debut date has been set.

Style: Imperial Stout (w/ Pumpkin. Molasses. Brown Sugar. Barrel Aged. Bourbon.)
Availability: 12oz Bottles
Debut: TBA

12.9% ABV

Ed note: Bottle size has been changed to 12oz, instead of 22oz as previously reported.

Weyerbacher Imperial Pumpkin Ale is back on summer shelves

Weyerbacher Imperial Pumpkin

Weyerbacher Imperial Pumpkin Ale is available once again ahead of the fall season.

In a fast paced world of seasonals and one-off releases, tried and true beers like Weyerbacher Imperial Pumpkin – incidentally one of the most popular of its style, has found earlier and earlier release dates over the past few years.

This 8.0% ABV pumpkin ale is the mother of all pumpkin ales. It is heartier, spicier and more “caramelly” and “pumpkiny” than its faint brethren! We have added lots of pumpkin along with cinnamon, nutmeg and a touch of cardamom and clove, giving this beer a spicy, full-bodied flavor.

Imperial Pumpkin and Southern Tier’s Pumking are typically the first pumpkin beers on shelves, even when there are plenty of pool days left.

Weyerbacher Imperial Pumpkin Ale is available in 12-ounce bottles and draft, seasonally.

Style: Pumpkin Beer
Hops: Simcoe
Availability: 12oz bottles, Draft. July- November, Seasonal.

Allagash Ghoulschip (a cellared edition) on sale October 29th

Allagash Ghoulschip, a spontaneously fermented pumpkin beer, will be on sale again this weekend at the brewery in Portland, Maine.

Interesting thing to note about these bottles – they are from the 2015 batch. The 2016 edition just isn’t ready yet. Such is the downside of the fermentation and perfection of wild beer.

Allagash Ghoulschip is probably one of the most fun spontaneous beers the brewery has set out to create. The brew team gets to put fresh pumpkins in a woodchipper in order to check the chunks needed for the beer. Face it, Halloween demands pumpkins. The hot wort is sent to chill in the coolship over night, on Halloween night, where the spontaneous fermentation begins as the dead walk the earth again.

All in all, Allagash Ghoulschip is a blend of 1,2, and 3 year beer, brewed with pumpkin, toasted pumpkin seeds, and a touch of molasses. The cellared edition will be available in the taproom in 12.7 ounce bottles.

Style: American Wild Ale (w/ Pumpkin, Toasted Pumpkin Seeds, Molasses. Oak Aged.)
Availability: 12.7oz Bottles
Latest Return: 10/29/16
