Epic Sour Brainless on Peaches, Batch #3

Epic Sour Brainless on Peaches

Epic Sour Brainless on Peaches returns again in May, 2017, marking the third release of this beer.

When Epic built their Denver, Colorado brewery in 2013, the sour program took a major step forward with the addition of three 60 hectoliter oak foeders (seen below). In 2014, some Brainless on Peaches casks got funked up by some errant wild yeast, and was so tasty, that Epic Sour Brainless on Peaches ended up launching the program. As of early 2017, the brewery now has 14 foeders.

Epic Sour Brainless on Peaches begins with one foeder filled with the souring bacteria, Lactobacillus, another with Brettanomyces. Scared to death of Pediococcus (aka “The Devil”), Epic filled wine casks with the Pedio and left the third foeder for blending.

The Final Blend.

Epic Sour Brainless on Peaches is a blend of the Brett and Lacto foeders, and all the Pediococcus wine casks that were blended into neutral oak white wine casks. The brewery’s new found love of Pediococcus eventually led them to finally funk up that third foeder with “The Devil”. Epic laments – this is the most sour edition of this beer to date.

Epic Brainless on Peaches Batch #3 is available in 375 milliliter bottles.

Style: American WIld/Sour Ale (w/ Peaches, Oak Aged.)
Availability: 375ml  bottles
Latest Return: May, 2017

Lost Abbey Veritas 019 goes on sale March 28th

Lost Abbey Veritas 019

Lost Abbey Veritas 019, the 19th edition in the brewery’s “Veritas” line of beers, goes on sale this month.

The California based brewery calls this ongoing experiment a “relationship between fruit, barrel-aging, and the wild yeast Brettanomyces. Each release is unique, small-batch, and unforgettable.

Lost Abbey Veritas 019 is a blonde sour ale that has been aging in French oak for over a year, before being introduced to fresh raspberries. Per Tomme Arthur, Lost Abbey’s co-founder, “The last time we did a fruited sour this intense was Cable Car Kriek back in 2011.”

Pouring shockingly pink, Veritas 019 begins with sweet aromas of rich berries and notably peppery Brett. Intense, Vibrant Raspberry character leading to a refreshingly sour middle with notes of funk on the finish.

Lost Abbey is planning a preview weekend starting March 24th where Veritas 019 will be available on draft. Attendees will have an opportunity to purchase bottles for pickup in April.

The general sale will occur online on Tuesday, March 28th at 12 Noon. No proxies. Sales are limited to 6 bottles per person, $41 dollars per bottle.

Negan approved. Terrapin Lucille, a second Walking Dead collaboration is cracking heads

Terrapin Lucille

Athens, Georgia based Terrapin Beer Company made waves a while back with their zombie themed Walking Dead Bood Orange IPA. In February, it returned once again in cans for the first time. The brewery now has two zombie apocalypse inspired beers on shelves. The newest?  Terrapin Lucille.

If you follow the show, Terrapin Lucille is named for the evil fella wreaking havok on our beloved Rick Grimes and crew – Negan and his weapon of choice, Lucille. The barbed wire should be a dead give away. If you haven’t been watching, the show gets pretty brutal. (And bloody.)

This beer drinks like dessert, but doesn’t drink like the 9.4% alcohol by volume beer it actually is. Perhaps this “Lucille” will do a little damage to your head as well. The imperial stout is brewed with both molasses and vanilla, and aged on hickory, maple, and white ash. All the wood that makes baseball bats.

Molasses dominates this beer, but isn’t overpowering, heavy or syrupy. Expect hints of brown sugar, dark chocolate oak and a touch of smoke.

Terrapin Lucille is available now in 500 milliliter bottles for a limited time.

Style: Imperial Stout (w/ Blackstrap Molasses, Vanilla Beans. Oak Aged.)
Availability: 500ml Bottles
Debut: March, 2017

9.4% ABV

Really big rabbits and Odell Flemish Giant

Odell Flemish Giant

Odell Flemish Giant, a future potential release in the brewery’s Cellar Series.

Consider this beer a tribute to the Belgian Flanders-style that is inspiring so many brewers in America. Odell Flemish Giant will have spent a year hidden a way in oak by the time you have this in your hands. Flemish Giant features flavors of raisins, figs and plum.

Recently, the brewery released Prop Culture in the Cellar Series.

Native to Belgium, the Flemish Giant is a breed of rabbit that dates back to the 16th century and tips the scales at 20 lbs. Burrowed in oak barrels for a year, Flemish Giant is our tribute to this prodigious hare and it’s homeland, the birthplace of the Flanders-style Sour Red Ale. Look for notes of tart ruby grapefruit and cherry to hop to the nose while sweet raisin, fig and plum favors thump the palette.

Ghent, Belgium is thank for one of the largest rabbits on earth – the Flemish Giant. First bred in the 16th century, the rabbit weighs on average around 15 pounds. (Honestly, there is a Monty Python movie sense that comes to mind.)

Odell Flemish Giant will be a 750 milliliter bottle release. The brewery has not yet announced this beer.

Style: Flanders Red Ale (Oak Aged.)
Availability: 750ml Bottles
Debut: TBA

6.6% ABV
