Stone Creates New “Saison”

Stone Brewing Co. (Escondido, CA) has been hinting at the release of a new beer a little different then their usual hop aggressive, or “arrogant” ales. By the looks of it, that beer will be Stone Saison.

Stone also owns a farm that grows various herbs and spices for their restaurant – Stone World Bistro & Gardens. Just like the restaurant, this farm-to-table saison is brewed with home grown lemon zest, lemon thyme, and lavender.

In spring 2011, Stone bought the farm, literally, taking over 19 acres of fertile Southern California soil where we now grow pristine fruits, vegetables, herbs and more for our Stone Brewing World Bistro &. Gardens restaurants. A taste of our homespun farm-to-tableism is provided in this farmhouse ale stoked with lemon zest, plus lemon thyme and lavender straight from Stone Farms. This spring-to-summer saison is citric and herbal on the palate with a dry, peppery finish. Thanks to the infusion of fresh West Coast ingredients, this isn’t your everyday saison. It’s our saison-100% Stone. Celebrate the sunny season with an authentic taste of our farm and, with it, our commitment to quality.

Look for Stone Saison in 12oz bottles and draft.

Anchor Brewing Releases Saison with “Cali Twist”

Anchor Brewing Company (San Francisco, CA) announced today the addition of Anchor Saison Spring Ale to their lineup.

While saisons originate in Wallonia, a French-speaking portion of Belgium. Anchor is taking a “California twist” to this saison, with the addition of in state grown lemongrass, lemon pepper, and ginger.

…The distinctiveness of roasted Belgian wheat malt is enhanced by the peppery, clove-like flavors of  a locally cultured saison-style yeast. And, for this release, Anchor chose three California ingredients—lemongrass, lemon peel, and ginger—whose synergy adds a tangy crispness and herbal spiciness to this sharply refreshing, uniquely Californian saison.

Anchor recently released Fort Ross Farmhouse Ale in the Zymaster Series. That was the first time the brewery has brewed/experimented with a Belgian-style yeast. After the big response, Head brewer Mark Carpenter thought a saison would fit the Anchor lineup nicely. Look for Anchor Saison from now until May, 2014.

Style: Saison (w/ Lemongrass, Lemon Peel, Ginger)
Availability: 12oz Bottles, Draft. March-May. First Release.

More on Cigar City & Widmer Bros Gentlemen’s Club

Tomorrow, June 13, will be the official launch party of the Cigar City and Widmer Brothers collaboration Gentlemen’s Club. Inspired by the Old Fashioned cocktail recipe and the Gentlemen’s Clubs where the cocktail was first served over 100 years ago, Gentlemen’s Club is a twist on an Old Ale Recipe. This brew features cherries and oranges, Alchemy, Sorachi Ace and Pacifica hops, and hand-selected specialty malts to try and emulate the flavors of the Old Fashioned cocktail. Then, the beer was aged on three different woods: bourbon barrels, rye whiskey barrels and new oak spirals, creating three unique versions of the beer.

Looking for a bottle? The first will be released during a special party at Widmer Brothers Pub during Portland Beer Week on June 13th starting at 5pm. After that, special releases from both breweries will also be available on draft. Bottles of Gentlemen’s Club will be available at the Widmer Brothers store starting at 5pm June 13, 2013.
