Sudwerk Rye of the Lager, a West Coast First

Sudwerk Rye of the Lager arrives in early August. The imperial rye lager took more than a year of test batches to perfect.

Sure there are plenty of hop bombs out there, but Sudwerk Rye of the Lager is billed as a needle in a “shelf stack.” This 7% alcohol by volume beer is balances Simcoe and Amarillo hops with spicy rye.

With ales, naturally occurring esters can at times compete against other ingredients, especially in the finish. That’s not the case here. In contrast, lager yeast provides a platform to let the other ingredients shine through. Stone fruit aromatics combine with lemon and pepper flavors, a pleasant blend of spice, and a bold finish.

Sudwerk Rye of the Lager is a the first of its kind on the west coast as far as Trent Yackzan is aware of. Available in 22 ounce bottles for a limited time.

Magic Hat Mother Lager Looks to Return to Lineup

Magic Hat Mother Lager looks to be making a return to the brewery’s lineup. First released back in 2003, we estimate it was retired around 2007-2008.

Magic Hat Mother Lager is a euro pale lager meant to refresh, but is quite easy to drink.

“The Evolved Euro-Style Lager. Brewed to spur the people to unite in the fight for imbibing emancipation and smash the oppressive tyranny of malt monotony! Mother Lager was a refreshing, evolved alternative to the familiar Euro-style imports, exported from the People’s Republic of Vermont.”

Magic Hat Mother Lager is a 12 ounce bottle offering. The return has not yet been announced.

Modern Times Mount Remarkable Marks First Bottled Lager

Modern Times Mount Remarkable marks the brewery’s first bottled lager. The 5% alcohol by volume “crusher” is brewed Australian Helga and Ella hops.

This nuanced, easy-drinking guzzler has a floral, fruity aroma; a crisp, dry body; and a crackery finish that hits all the right notes for a 5% ABV lager.

Modern Times Mount Remarkable will be available in 22oz bottles throughout southern California by the end of April. On tap in the tasting room starting this week.
