Yazoo Hop Project #63

Yazoo Brewing is shipping Hop Project #63.  The project is a way for brewmaster Linus Hall to experiment using any hops he can get his hands on.

Linus on #63

This is the one I personally have been really anticipating. Last year I managed to get my hands on just a little bit of Australian Galaxy hops, which we used as just a finishing hop in one of the Hop Projects. But we couldn’t make very much of it, and I went back to trying to source a larger amount. Well, we got lucky and found enough this year to do a nice long run of Hop Project #63, featuring this great hop from down under, in both a flavor and aroma hop role. It’s got a wonderfully ripe fruity nose, with a long, lingering, and clean bitterness. We made 160 bbls of it so far (equivalent to about 2000 cases) so we should be able to get some out to all the areas that sell Yazoo Hop Project over the next month. Look for it in Nashville first, then Knoxville, Chattanooga, Memphis, Jackson and Vicksburg, MS; and very soon along the MS coast!

Style: IPA
Availability: 12oz bottles, limited draft.

Widmer’s X-114 IPA With Grapefruit Is Shaddock

People sometimes describe the aromas and flavors of hoppy IPAs as “grapefruit.” Hell, why not use some then? Widmer’s brewing team used a simple IPA recipe and added a generous amount of dried grapefruit peel to the end of the boil. The aroma is a melody of citrus, with a slight spice undertone, accentuated by the use of Citra hops. The flavor is that of nice hop forward IPA with the bitterness of grapefruit.

Lagunitas Sucks (Holiday Leftovers) Hits

Lagunitas Sucks The LeftoversTalk about more than they bargained for.  You start with Lagunitas not being able to brew Brown Shugga’ (money and capacity roadblocks), so they brewing a substitute – Lagunitas Sucks.  The IPA was a pretty big hit, disappearing from shelves and tap handles as fast as it appeared.  Bad news stuck Petaluma, California last last year when the brewhouse was destroyed in transit.  The result? Big Hairy Eyeball gets bumped from the 2012 schedule.  However that opened up the potential to brew Sucks again.  This time with a name tweak – Lagunitas Sucks Holiday Leftovers Ale.

Don’t be confused.  It’s the same hoppy IPA that has made so many people fall in love so quickly.  Arriving on shelves now in 12oz bottles, & draft.

Style: American IPA
Availability: Limited early 2012 release.  Sucks/Sucks Leftovers not on future brewing schedule.

Half Acre Daly Double Arrives Friday

Half Acre Brewing is in the process of brewing Daly Double, made in memoriam of a friend Terry Daly.  He died recently, and suddenly.

Terry was a fan of music, geometry, his two Huskies, Moon & Luna, and amply hopped craft beer.  We’re pretty sure that Terry was the foremost consumer of Daisy Cutter Pale Ale. Terry began popping in to buy sixtels of Daisy and before long he stopped by almost everyday just to chew the fat. After a while, he had the authority to walk back into the brewery and go into the cold room to reserve himself kegs and manage his own kegerator inventory for his home Daisy Cutter supply. Being a bright dude, we put him to work wiring things or lending a hand doing whatever needed to be done. He’d turn others on to our beer and took pride in his connection to our brewery.  All good breweries acquire people. These people become the larger body that is the meat of your brewing company. Not the tanks or the beers, but the heart of what we do. It has a pulse of its own and its one of the best things about brewing beer for a living.  The Daly Double is for Terry and all the other folks that give breweries life . To Terry, Huzzah!

Style: IPA
Availability: 22oz bombers. Growler fills.
Arrival: Friday January 6, 2012.  12 noon.
