Firestone Walker Cashmere XPA joins mixed pack for summer

Firestone Walker Cashmere XPA

Firestone Walker Cashmere XPA is exclusively a part of the brewery’s ‘Beer Before Glory” Mixed Pack this summer.

Cashmere XPA is a pale ale, brewed with the Cashmere hops. Like so many popular hop varieties, Cashmere has a very unique tropical citrus flavor.

“I think it’s cool that this is a cultivar from the public breeding program, meaning that any hop farmer can grow it,” Brynildson said. “But more importantly, it’s a true new age hop with these beautiful soft fruit qualities that are really distinct.” – Matt Brynildson, Brewmaster

Cashmere XPA is joined by newly formulated Easy Jack, Union Jack, and Firestone Lager in this seasonal 12-pack. Available throughout summer 2019.

Style: IPA
Hops: Cashmere

Firestone Walker grew custom hops for Luponic Distortion 13

Firestone Luponic Distortion 13

Instead of simply selecting certain hops for the next Luponic Distortion releases, Firestone Walker went another way. Custom grown hops.

Three years ago, Firestone Walker’s brewmaster Matt Brynildson secured a deal with Hop Breeding Company’s breeders Jason Perrault and Michael Ferguson. Three acres of a special new hop cultivar was planted. According to Brynildson, it was all worth the wait.

“The tropical aspect of this hop is really crazy. It adds a distinctive dimension to the aroma profile of the beer.”

This new hop is supported by five additional hops, creating a beer that boasts “unique profile of piña colada, key lime, and nectarine.”

Firestone Walker Luponic Distortion 13 starts shipping to all of the brewery’s markets this week.

Style: IPA
Availability: 12oz Cans, Draft. Rotating release.

Creature Comforts Tropicalia is coming to 16-oz cans soon

Creature Comforts Tropicalia 16oz Cans

Creature Comforts Tropicalia, the Athens, Georgia based brewery’s top-selling beer, and one of the Southeast’s most popular India pale ales, is coming to 16-ounce cans this summer.

Creature Comfort’s massive success has a lot to do with Tropicalia. This balanced, juicy IPA has a very loyal following, so much so, that for a while stores would limit sales of this year-round beer to just one 6-pack per person.

For the loyal Tropicalia acolytes, expect a new format coming your way this summer – Tropicalia 16-ounce cans. The pint-size cans are a hot packaging format in the beer industry, and for Creature Comforts. 16-ounce “Trop” cans are a no-brainer. The brewery has been releasing 16-ounce cans for a while now, but only for their taproom/small batch releases.

David Stein, Creature Comforts co-founder and head brewer tells Beer Street Journal that fans can expect this larger can format sometime in June 2019. He also noted that the 12-ounce cans will remain in the brewery’s lineup as well.

Dogfish Head debuts low-carb ‘Slightly Mighty Lo-Cal IPA’

Dogfish Head Slightly Mighty Lo-Cal IPA

Dogfish Head Slightly Mighty Lo-Cal IPA, brewed for the health conscious beer drinker, debuts this spring.

The off-centered brewers in Delaware might be the first brewery to create a low-calorie India pale ale for the healthy-minded drinker. Essentially light beer’s version of the venerable IPA

Slightly Mighty Lo-Cal IPA has 95 calories and 3.6 carbohydrates per 12-ounce serving.

India pale ales are known for big hop and malt flavors, making the task of reducing the calorie and carbohydrate content tricky. In the brewing process, enzymes break complex carbohydrates into fermentable sugar that the yeast we turn into alcohol. A typical IPA has on average 16 to 20 grams of carbohydrates per serving. Dogfish cut Slightly Mighty’s to less than four.

Reducing the malt bill reduces the sweetness of the beer, making it taste watered down. Not to mention the astringency from a Dogfish Head-style IPA’s hop bill.

To bring balance to flavor and balance to this low-cal IPA approach, Dogfish has used monk fruit. This superfruit is twenty times sweeter than most fruit juices, low calorie, and a great sweetness replacement for Slightly Mighty. According to the brewery, the addition of monk fruit juice did not add calories to the final IPA.

Dogfish Slightly Mighty IPA is touted to have aromas of pineapple, coconut, and citrus, with a dry, fruity palate. Look for this new low-calorie India pale ale starting in April 1st in select markets. Full distribution by fall 2019.

Style: IPA (w/ Monk Fruit)
Availability: 12oz Cans, Draft.
Debut: April 1
