Hop Fiends: Bell’s Oracle Ships, Oktoberfest Returns

Bell’s Brewing’s Oracle is headed back to shelves for it’s seasonal return, while Oktoberfest has already arrived.  Oracle is aggressively hoppy, but no honey to sweeten the finish (like Hopslam.)  All bitter baby!

Our take on the West Coast-style Double India Pale Ale, The Oracle places hop intensity first & foremost, making only the slightest concession to malt & balance. The fireworks start with the floral aromatic punch of two separate dry-hop sessions with Amarillo and NZ Pacific Jade. Resinous, citrusy hop flavors mixed with aggressive bitterness from a massive kettle addition deliver on that aromatic promise.

Style: Imperial IPA
Availability: 12oz bottles, Draft. Limited late summer seasonal.
10% ABV

Oktoberfest is back for another fall run.  It’s still so hot its hard to get into the marzen swing of things.  (Cool weather is coming. It just has to be.)

Crafted as a flavorful session beer, Bell’s Octoberfest Beer is perfect for a week-long wedding celebration in Germany or the start of the Michigan autumn. As with Bell’s Lager Beer,Octoberfest spends a full six weeks maturing in the fermentation vessels. Unlike its cousin,Octoberfest trades in the assertive hop presence for a focus on a light caramel malt note, lending body without too much sweetness.

Style: Octoberfest/Marzen
Availability: 12oz bottles, Draft. Late Summer/Fall seasonal.
5.5% ABV

Sam Adams Third Voyage: History & Hops

Samuel Adams Third Voyage joins Tasman Red in the new Small Batch Series.  As the label states: This series of limited edition brews represents some of our favorite small batch creations.   This double IPA is inspired by Capt. James Cook, an explorer and map maker who became famous sailing the globe.  Cook’s “Third Voyage” took place over the course over 3 years – 1776-1779.  This now infamous voyage was to discover the Northwest Passage, in which he was successful.  Cook was killed in an argument with Hawaiians during the voyage, on February 14th, 1779.  As a practice of honor at the time, Cook was disemboweled, baked and the bones removed as religious relics.  The beer however, has a slightly less morbid finish.

Label:
This unique double IPA takes the style’s origins a step further.  IPAs were born out of making an ale that could sustain a long voyage.  For our take, we were inspired by the indomitable Capt. James Cook whose 3rd voyage made him the first to navigate a treacherous route from England to New Zealand to the Pacific Northwest . Using Cascade hops from each of these regions we crated a a brew that’s citrusy, earthy, and full of bold character.

Style: Imperial IPA
Hops:  Cascade from UK & New Zealand, Simcoe from U.S.
Malts:  Two-Row Harrington, Metcalfe & Copeland Pale, Caramalt, Honey Malt
Availability: 22oz bombers, Draft.

Epic Armageddon. Barrel Aged. All 18th Century Like.

Epic Brewing (New Zealand) took Armadeggeon IPA and put it into oak barrels.  Now headed stateside.  It started off with 2 tiny wood barrels so tasty it turned into a bottling run.

Label:
In the beginning, there was Armageddon. Then an impish brewer put the beer in new oak barrels to age it for 8 weeks. This was to reproduce the original IPA of the 18th century. It may be too huge for this fragile planet so enjoy this beer like it was the last one on Earth.

Style: Imperial IPA (oak aged)

Availability:  500ml bottles
