Space Yeast Makes Ninkasi Ground Control

This past summer, Ninkasi Brewing unveiled the Ninkasi Space Program (NSP). The goal? Send yeast to space and back, and use it in a new beer.

The first mission of NSP took flight with a rocket that was launched by the Civilian Space eXploration Team (CSXT) and Team Hybriddyne from Spaceport America. 16 vials of brewer’s yeast were packed on the first flight. Unfortunately, the payload was lost in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert for 27 days, and the yeast perished.

In October of 2014, six more vials of brewer’s yeast was sent 77.3 miles upward, and back to Earth safely. Neil Armstrong would have been proud.

“After almost two years of research, development, lab time, and two separate rocket launches to garner space yeast, we have finally completed our mission,” says Nikos Ridge, Ninkasi CEO and co-founder. “It was a project born out of passionate people coming together to try something new and we can’t wait to share it with the world.”

The result is Ninkasi Ground Control, an imperial stout brewed with yeast that has touched the stars.

Ninkasi Ground Control is nuanced Oregon hazelnuts, star anise and cocoa nibs. The brewery is “launching” the new offering on April 13, 2015 in 22oz bottles.

Style: Imperial Stout (w/ Hazelnuts, Star Anise, Cocoa Nibs)
Hops: Apollo, Bravo, Comet (See a theme?)
Malt: 2-Row Pale, Black, Chocolate, Munich, Crystal, Honey, Special Roast, Peated

Availability: 22oz Bottles
Distribution: AK, AZ, CA, CO, ID, NV, OR, WA. Canada: Alberta, BC, Vancouver

10% ABV, 80 IBUs

Fun fact: Eugene, Oregon based Neal Williams is the artist behind the Ground Control label, whose works include concert posters for Queens of the Stone Age, Dave Matthew Band, Interpol, and The Head & The Heart. Image via Ninkasi Brewing.

One Shade of The Bruery’s Grey Monday

A cousin? Sister? Hot neighbor to the infamous Black Tuesday– this is The Bruery’s Grey Monday. It is closing in on a year ago that Beer Street Journal mentioned that this Black Tuesday variant was going to be released. No implying here. Grey Monday is the brewery’s massive imperial stout aged in bourbon (Black Tuesday), with a hazelnut addition. Every member in the 2012 Reserve Society received one last year…

We are going to do an extremely limited bottling of this beer, just for you. Each member will get a single bottle. There will be no extra beer for sale. Not to you and not to anyone else. We want this one to be extra special.

Grey Monday is a part of the Reserve Society again this year too. By all estimates this will be the 3rd brew of what sounds like an insanely good imperial stout. (1: Dinner at Beachwood BBQ, 2: 2012 bottles). Good luck getting your handles on a taste or even a bottle.

Style: Imperial Stout (w/ hazelnut, Barrel Aged. Bourbon)
Availability: 750 ml Bottles. Bruery Reserve Society Only.
Arrival: TBA (2013)

18.6% ABV

Bruery To Release Grey Monday (Limited Black Tuesday Variant)

A special release to The Bruery’s Reserve Society members will be a Black Tuesday variant dubbed “Grey Monday.”  The beer is essentially Black Tuesday aged on hazelnuts.  Believe me, this beer will be a rare one too. There will only be enough bottles to cover sales to the 2012 Reserve Society members. No one else.  The Reserve Society email reads like this:

Your Reserve Society membership was said to come with 2 pieces of exclusive merchandise and there has been much speculation as to what that 2nd item would be.

To be honest, our original ideafor the 2nd item didn’t work out. Timing, pricing and overall quality of the item just didn’t hold up to our standards. We really wanted to find something special for our Society members and felt that putting our name on something generic wouldn’t do the trick, so we came up with a new plan that we think you will all appreciate.

Every member of the 2012 Reserve Society will receive a bottle of Grey Monday.

Grey Monday is a special version of our Black Tuesday imperial stout that has been aged on hazelnuts. Up until now, only a single, 5 gallon cask of Grey Monday has ever existed, but it was one of our favorite beers to date and it resonated similarly with those lucky few who got to try it.

We are going to do an extremely limited bottling of this beer, just for you. Each member will get a single bottle. There will be no extra beer for sale. Not to you and not to anyone else. We want this one to be extra special.

Of course, we won’t have this beer ready to pick up until October, around the time that Black Tuesday is released, but we were too excited to keep this information to ourselves.

We hope this information wets your palate and gets you excited for some of the beers coming your way during the 2nd half of the year.

Style: Imperial Stout (Hazelnuts, Barrel Aged)
Availability: 750 ml bottles. Reserve Society only
Arrival: October, 2012

Note: That’s not the official artwork. Hopefully I didn’t have to tell you that…

Founders Frangelic Mountain Brown Is Next Backstage Release

Arriving in July, Founders Frangelic Mountain Brown will join the Backstage Series. Frangelic following Curmudgeon’s Better Half.   Per Founders:

Part of what makes Founders Backstage Series so much fun is the period of speculation before the next release is announced. But the purpose of the series is to bring some of our most sought-after beers, which have been available primarily in the taproom and at a few select events, to a much larger audience. Frangelic Mountain Brown will be the fourth release in the series, joining Blushing Monk and Canadian Breakfast Stout from 2011 and Curmudgeon’s Better Half, which was released in February of this year.

Frangelic Mountain Brown is the quintessential taproom “one-off” beer: Founders’ brewers created the Mountain Brown series for their taproom in Grand Rapids in 2007. Frangelic Mountain Brown is the 16th iteration in the series of popular brown ales–and it likely won’t be the last. The singular characteristic of this beer comes from the use of hazelnut coffees in the brewing process. The beer has distinct aromatics with sweet and nutty flavors beautifully balanced. Founders is known for its beers made with coffee (i.e., the Breakfast Stout series), but this is both the brewery’s first brown ale and its first beer brewed with hazelnut coffees to be bottled. It clocks in at 9% ABV.

“The goal of the Backstage Series is to allow those beer enthusiasts who don’t have the ability to make it to our taproom an opportunity to experience some of the beers that, historically, have been limited to our taproom and a handful of high exposure events,” Engbers said. “Although these beers are not brewed in large volume, it is our intention to distribute them to all of our markets.”

While there will not be an official release party for Frangelic Mountain Brown at the brewery’s taproom in Grand Rapids, the beer will be available on draft in the taproom beginning Monday, July 2. The focus of bottle sales will be in Founders’ distribution footprint.

The next beer to be released in the series later this year will be a celebration of the brewery’s fifteenth anniversary, though the beer’s style is yet-to-be revealed. The release party for this beer in November will be Founders’ first to require advance tickets. The KBS release party in spring of 2013 is expected to be an even larger festival-type event—be on the lookout for more detail to come.
