A Smokey Belgian Dubbel From Victory

Victory Brewing (Downingtown, PA) is brewing up something a new for you.  A bottle conditioned Belgian dubbel with a smokey twist.  Bill Covaleski and Ron Barchet, founders of Victory Brewing created this beer after a Germany trip in ’87.  Otto is a German smoked malt Belgian dubbel.

Covaleski on Otto:
“The complimentary flavors of smoked malt and Belgian yeast seemed like an obvious combination,” said Bill. “As far as we know, no one has bothered to put them together until now.”
Label:

In 1987, when we arrived in Bamberg, Germany for the first time, St. Otto was not there to greet two thirsty travelers in a rented Fiat. He’d been dead for 848 years but we were alive, and our recent visit to the Belgian brewery of Orval only fanned the flames of our desire for fermented pleasures. The smoked malt (‘rauch’) beers of this lovely town where St. Otto was once Bishop were our siren song, luring us into deep, exotic flavors that we never before imagined in beer. Three decades later we wondered what smoked malt might add to a Belgian-style dubbel ale. Here is it, an Otto revival of sorts. We hope it helps rejuvenate some of our brain cells that were martyred in Bamberg so long ago. — The Brewmasters of Victory

Style: Belgian dubbel
Hops: German
Malts: Munich, Caramel

St. Martin Arrives In Georgia, Meet The Brewer

Brasserie De Brunehaut (Brunehaut, Belgium) is making it’s first appearance in Atlanta this week.  Brunehaut was founded in 1890 and brewed continuously for 100 years until 1990 when the brewery relocated to it’s new facility with modern brewing equipment.

Brunehaut is best know for their St. Martin line of Abbey beers.  These beers are the ones making the debut.  St. Martin brand lineup:

Blonde — Belgian Strong Pale, 7%.  Bananas, citrus, candi sugar, spicy & complex

Dark — Dubbel, 8%.  Dark fruits, roasted malts, chocolate & molasses.

Triple — 9%.  Strong carbonation, bready, w/ hint of Belgian yeast. Light fruits.

Cuvee de Noel — Belgian Strong Dark, 8.5%.  Seasonal release, winter. Coming soon.

The brewery has 2 other lines of beers – Brunehaut, & a regional series. Only the St. Martin lineup makes it stateside (according to Abbey representative.)

Tonight at Ormsby’s, Marc-Antoine De Mees of Brunehaut will host a special launch event at 7pm.  Tickets are $20, which includes all three launch beers, and appetizers.   Call Ormsby’s for tickets.

Lonerider Belle Star Belgian Holiday Ale

Lonerider Belle Star Belgian Holiday Ale

Per Lonerider:

Well, the beer to match the season is here. Belle Starr will be available at our hideout (click for directions) on DECEMBER 18th starting at 2 PM. Since we are bottling only 5 bbls of this beer, we will have a very limited supply at the brewery. So please come by early to get your bottle just in time for the holiday season.

Be wary of Starr’s smile, there is something sinister behind her innocent look. Belle Starr is a Belgian-style Dubbel brewed with a rare Belgian yeast strain, caramelized beet sugar and festive holiday spices. Expect hints of dark fruit, sweet cinnamon-apple and a warming finish. ABV is 7.7%

Terrapin’s GA Theatre Vol 2 Hits Stores!

I think we were all expecting this a few weeks ago.  However, when you are hand packaging each beer it takes time.  The second beer in the Georgia Theatre Sessions has finally hit shelves.   This is 2 of 4 beers being released by Terrapin to benefit the historic Georgia Theatre that was nearly completely destroyed recently in a fire in Terrapin’s home town of Athens, GA.  “Double Feature” celebrates the theatre’s history – especially when it became a movie theater in 1918.

Description from Spike, brewer at Terrapin

Dubbel Feature “Belgian Style Dubbel” is the second of four beers in Terrapin’s Georgia Theatre Sessions. It is brewed with 100% Belgian Malts, an authentic Trappist yeast and Golding and Hersbrucker hops. This deep caramel colored brew has a delicate balance between sweet malt, estery yeast, a subtle bitterness and mellow alcoholic warmth. All the characteristics of a fine Trappist Ale.

A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Georgia Historic Trust for Historic Preservation Fund to rebuild the Georgia Theatre. To make things even more interesting, there is one Golden Ticket hidden among each of the Georgia Theatre Sessions brews. This means that four lucky winners will receive a lifetime pass to the new Theatre.

I hope that you are the lucky winner!

Cheers! — Spike
