Sierra Nevada to Team Up with 12 Breweries

Sierra-Nevada-Logo2To celebrate the opening of the North Carolina brewery, Sierra Nevada Brewing is scheming up some beers featuring revered craft brewers across the country. One beer per brewery will be released in the summer of 2014 in a variety 12 packs. This will also include festivals with no specific path determined yet. The following breweries will be visiting Chico to develop recipes and brew:

“We want to highlight the success of craft beer, not just our own next step. Craft brewers are a close bunch, and we’ve all helped each other get to this point. This is a fun way to showcase even just a fraction of the talent that’s out there, and somehow 12 beers doesn’t feel like enough. If this weren’t already a logistical mammoth, we’d brew with even more of our great peers.” Ken Grossman, Sierra Nevada’s founder.

Half Acre & New Belgium Team Up

Half Acre New Belgium Soft Sour Ale

Half Acre Beer Company (Chicago, IL) and New Belgium (Fort Collins, CO) have teamed up to create two different beers. Each of the releases is motivated by a trip to the other’s brewery. New Belgium has already been to Half Acre, and in August the crew will head to Colorado to create their own iteration.

Beer #1: 2023m2 Soft Sour Ale. Designed to highlight the “soft complexity” of New Belgium’s brews. 2023 was slightly soured in the kettle, with Maresh and Sumac spices. Half Acre hopes to brew it again in 2023 and send it to Mars. (Probably not a joke).

Those close to Chicago will be pleased to know it launches July 19th. 22oz bottles, and growlers will be available.  We will update you on the brew day in Colorado in August.

If you go:

  • Release Date: Friday, July 19, 2013
  • 6% ABV
  • 64 oz. growler refill: $16 *
  • 32 oz. growler refill: $9 *
  • 16 oz. draft: $5
  • 22 oz. bottle: $8.99 (limit 3)

*limited to 64 ounces of growler beer total per person

Redhook Joint Effort Tap

Redhook Brewery has just announced a new beer celebrating the legalization of marijuana in Washington State.  The hemp beer brewed in collaboration with Seattle’s Hilliard’s Beer, aptly named “Joint Effort.” Hilliard’s Beer opened in 2011 in the same area where Redhook got their start in 1981.

So… onto this “legal” beer. Joint Effort is a session ale brewed with hemp seeds, and aggressively dry hopped. The says Effort is “the perfect brew for hanging with your buds, grabbing some munchies and enjoying a beer. Look for draft starting in mid-July, and bottles starting in October, 2013. To our knowledge, the tap handle seen above is not a working bong.

Style:              (w/ Hemp Seeds)
Hops: Zeus, Cascade, Summit
Availability: Draft (July), Bottles (October)

5.6% ABV

* Initiative 502, passed by voters in November 2012, legalized possession and use of moderate amounts of marijuana in Washington State.

Music Fest Only Beer: Goose Island & Rapper Killer Mike & El-P

I love the idea of collaborations and festival beers. The only frustrating part is that some of these great beers

are never to be found by many. Hey, more motivation to get your ass to a festival this summer. Goose Island (Chicago, IL) created Run the Jewels with Atlanta rapper Killer Mike and El-P (Brooklyn, NY). The Belgian style wheat beer (named for their collaborative album)was an eye opening experience for these guys. Catch El-P’s quote about the hops – “they were very familiar smelling.” Get this beer at the Pitchfork Music Festival this summer.

Style: Belgian Wheat Beer
Availability: Draft only
