Collaboration: Cigar City & Evil Twin

Cigar City Brewing (Tampa, FL) and Evil Twin Brewing (Denmark) team up  in a new ale born from fermentation history. Before the rise and popularity of wood barrels, the Greeks aged wine in ceramic vessels amphoras (something Cantilon has done recently.) The ceramic vessels were susceptible to oxygen, and were repaired with Aleppo pine sap. The use of the sap gave the wine a unique flavor, one mimicked in this collaboration, Columella.

This ale was inspired by the origins of a Greek wine called Retsina, which was produced over 2,000 years ago. The Greeks used ancient vessels for storage and transport of the wine that were made of mostly ceramic called amphora. These vessels pre-dated the more common storage vessel of today, wooden barrels. Ceramic was susceptible to flaws and breakage, allowing more oxygen ingress into the wine. The Greeks found a solution to mending these vessels by using sap from the Aleppo Pine (which we emulate by aging the beer on spruce wood). The resulting unique aromatic character became so popular with the Grecian people that they continued this method following the discovery and dominance of wood barrels.

Cigar City / Evil Twin Columella will be available in 22oz bombers.

Style:   (Oak Aged)
Availability: 22oz bombers, Draft
Arrival: TBA

NoDa & Night Shift Team Up, Music Video Included

It wasn’t enough for two breweries to collaborate. They had to make a throw-back rap video. Today, NoDa Brewing is releasing Stop, Collaborate & Glisten, their new co-brew with Night Shift Brewing in Everett, Massachussetts.

The beer is a golden ale that has been resting in white wine barrels for the past year. While the beer is probably pretty great, the video might be a little more bitter. (Pun intended.)

NoDa/Night Shift Brewing Stop, Collaborate and Glisten will available on tap at the brewery, and bottles sold (already sold out in Massachussetts!)

Enjoy the video. I see you rapping Lindsay…

New Belgium & Perennial Team Up on New Lips of Faith

New Belgium (Ft. Collins, CO) teams up with St. Louis, Missouri’s Perennial Artisanal Ales in a new edition from the Lips of Faith. Salted Belgian Chocolate Stout is headed your way in the near future.

The team berated a Belgian-style stout with a touch of chocolate and salt. 22oz of dessert in a bottle.

Dessert is best poured. And the brewers at Perennial agree. So we dreamt up a beer that would bering together chocolate sweetness, Belgian yeast, deeply roasted malts and just the right shake of salt to pour a creamy stout worth of a cherry on top.

New Belgium/Perennial Salted Belgian Chocolate Stout will be available in 22oz bombers and draft.

Style: Belgian-Style Imperial Stout (w/ Chocolate, Salt)
Availability: 22oz Bombers, Draft.
Arrival: Late September, 2014. (Oct for most markets)

9% ABV

Stone Unapologetic IPA

On Monday, prepare for more hops from Stone Brewing Co. (Escondido, CA). The next collaboration hits shelves. Stone Unapologetic IPA is pretty much the “lack” of apology for creating another IPA. This new hop bomb is a collaboration between Stone, Beachwood Brewing (Alhambra, CA) and Heretic Brewing (Fairfield, CA).

Loaded with new hop varieties, including two that don’t even have names yet—HBC 342 and Hopsteiner Experimental Hop #06300—this beer makes a strong argument with a melange of tropical fruit, berry, citrus, coconut and melon flavors complementing intense, signature Stone bitterness. You can read the rest of our rationale on the official Stone Collaborations page.

Beachwood/Heretic/Stone Unapologetic IPA will be available in 22oz bombers and draft for a limited time.

Style: Imperial IPA
Availability: 22oz Bombers, Draft

Arrival: June 30th 2014

8.8% ABV

Sierra Nevada Collaborates with Russian River

Sierra Nevada’s Beer Camp mixed pack arrives in July, featuring twelve different collaborations with breweries coast to coast.

One of the bottles is a collaboration with another very well known California brewery, Russian River. Yvan, refers to Belgian brewing great Yvan De Baets, of Brasserie De la Senne.

This genre-bending beer has the bright, resinous hop profile of an American IPA blended with the dry and complex yeast character of a Belgian farmhouse ale. Yvan the Great is a perfect combination of the two brewing styles—hoppy, dry, spicy, and impressive.

Sierra  Nevada Yvan the Great joins eleven other offerings coming this July in the Beer Camp Across America Mixed Pack.

Style: Blonde Ale
Hops: Brewer’s Gold, Strisselspalt, Celeia
Malts: Two Row Pale, Golden Promise, Acidulated
Yeast: Belgian Ale

Availability: 12oz bottles, Draft. Beer Camp 12-pack.

Arrival: July, 2014

6.3% ABV

Jester King & Fantome Collaborate. Sorry, Texas.

Jester King Brewery (Austin, TX) recently collaborated with world famous Belgian brewer Fantome in Soy, Belgium. The brewery travelled abroad for the opportunity to create a farmhouse ale (much like they do in the Lone Star State.)

This story doesn’t have a happy ending for the folks in Texas. Jester King Fantome Del Rey will not make it shelves there. The state’s licensing fees to distribute there is way too high. In addition beers must be subjected to laboratory testing. Faced with these hurdles, many small breweries, stateside and beyond, don’t sell in the state.

Some of the Jester King Fantome Del Rey will ship stateside in small quantities, to those that receive Fantome currently.

Style: Farmhouse Ale
Availability: 750ml Bottles
