Shmaltz Upgrades Death of a Contract Brewer

Shmaltz Brewing Company (Clifton Park, NY) released Death of a Contract Brewer Black IPA in celebration of their first brick and mortar brewery. No more contract brewing for the 17 year old craft brewery.

The first ever black IPA by Shmaltz is now being upgraded to year round status in 22oz bottles and limited draft.

“Celebrate our rebirth with Shmaltz’s first-ever black IPA, brewed with 7 malts, 7 hops and 7% abv,” says Shmaltz Brewmaster Paul McErlean. “Savor this rich, jet black IPA — overflowing with characteristics of coffee, dark chocolate, and fresh citrus with a mix of pine. Deep roasted malt flavors provide support for a bold mix of bright and bitter West Coast hops. We promise, this is one form of Death you’ll want to pour in a glass and shout L’Chaim! (to life!).”

Shmaltz’s new home boasts a 50-barrel brewhouse with 20,000 barrels of annual capacity.

Style: Black IPA
Availability: 22oz Bombers, Draft. Now year round.

Collaboration: Widmer Brothers & Boneyard Beer

A new collaboration is on the way in the craft beer industry. This year Widmer Brothers Brewing (Portland, OR) celebrates 30 years of craft brewing. To celebrate, the brewery is collaborating with a few special people. (Six to be exact.)

Coming soon is Blacklight IPA, brewed with Boneyard Beer from Bend, Oregon. Widmer Brothers brewer Ben Dobler has known Boneyard’s Tony Lawrence for 17 years, making this first collaboration an easy choice.

Blacklight IPA is a meld of the two breweries styles. A hop forward, sessionable 4.2% abv black ale with dark roasty notes.

Brewed with a heavy dose of five different hops varieties and stained black as night with cold-steeped dark malts, this beer hits huge with hop flavor and aroma without the heavy roast and harsh bitterness suggested by its color.

Widmer Brothers/Boneyard Beer Blacklight IPA will be available in 22oz bombers in Portland, Seattle, San Francisco, San Diego, Minneapolis, New York City, Boston, and Philadelphia.

Style: Black IPA
Hops: Alchemy, Nelson Sauvin, Amarillo, Summer, Citra
Malts: Two Row Pale, Midnight Wheat, Special Aromatic, Flaked Barley, Caraffa III, Caravienne

Availability: 22oz Bombers
Arrival: April, 2014

Heavy Seas Black Cannon Returns

If I’m calculating correctly, 2014 marks the forth year for this Heavy Seas Brewing’s seasonal. Black Cannon is back on shelves once again, bridging a black, hoppy gap leading up to the coming RipTide.

The beer uses a lot of dark malts (obviously) and a full cannon of hops like the year round predecessor Loose Cannon.

Our brewers modeled this black IPA after Loose Cannon, with a slight change: it’s almost as if they burnt the brew. Deep-dark ruby, Black Cannon has a roasted character from Blackprinz and Roasted Barley malts, but a heaping portion of hops—in the kettle, hopback, and fermenter—impart flavor and aroma. Floral and pine notes show up in the nose. The mouthfeel is very smooth.

Heavy Seas Black Cannon is available no through March.

Style: Black IPA
Hops: Warrior, Simcoe, Palisade, Cascade, Centennial, Amarillo
Malts: 2-Row, Munich, Caramalt, Blackprinz, Roasted Barley

Availability: 12oz Bottles, Draft. Jan-March, Seasonal

Lagunitas NightTime Ale in April

If you are going to brew an opposing beer to Lagunitas DayTime IPA, what would you brew? Night Time Ale of course.

The label description make a reference to the separation of the light and the dark (not Star Wars style) but more the difference in life during the day, and life at night.

That’s why Night Time Ale is different too – A black IPA. A beer for midnight. Or 2 am. You’ll see this offering in April, 2014.

Style: Black IPA
Availability: 22oz Bombers, Draft. April-June

Terrapin Monk’s Belgian Black IPA This Year

Around September of 2014, expect Terrapin Beer Co (Athens, GA) to release Monk’s Belgian Black IPA into their Monster Beer Tour.

There aren’t a whole lot of details about the recipe, as the brewing team is going to be tweaking the beer between now and brew day in the Summer sometime.

The 2014 Monster Beer Tour will include Hopzilla, Wake-n-Bake and new Rye Cubed.

Previous Monster Beer Tour member Big Hoppy Monster (seen above) has been retired.

Check out the full 2014 Terrapin preview here.

Short’s Bludgeons You Again on Nov 20th

This is the 3rd time Bludgeon Your Eye has been released. This black IPA is among the few offerings from Short’s that fit an actual style guideline. (Accidents happen!)

An India Black Ale, Bludgeon Yer Eye exists as a shining example that we at Short’s are capable of landing within stylistic guidelines (when those guidelines suit the beers we make). Intense fruity and floral aromas abound with a subtle malty fragrance reluctantly piercing through. A deep black color attunes the palate for rich, dark, roasted malt flavors. The unexpected twist comes in the finish when high hop bitterness takes over and resonates profoundly.

Bottles hit Michigan on November 20th.

Style: Black IPA
Availability: 12oz bottles, Draft. (Limited)

6.2% ABV, 75 IBUs
