The 2014 release of Stone Brewing Co’s Old Guardian Barleywine is slated for February 24th. While every year finds an Old Guardian release, each Odd Year, sees a “odd” version of this boozy offering.

Barley wines are traditionally hefty brews, but ours is downright excessive. The huge maltiness of this beer is only tamed by an equally prodigious addition of hops, creating a rich, slightly sweet, caramel-hued ale infused with assertive bitterness and bright hop notes, all culminating in a pleasing dryness. While it will evolve into an even more glorious brew with age, this beer’s delicious onslaught of flavors will seriously challenge your ability to wait any longer to drink it.

Stone Old Guardian Barleywine is available in 22oz bombers and draft seasonally, for a limited time.

Red Brick Releases Beard Envy [VIDEO]

Red Brick Brewing (Atlanta) will have a new barrel aged offering on the shelves in the southeast this week. Beard Envy is the brewery’s barrel aged barley wine.

Brewers Garett Lockhart and Steve Anderson have been kicking around around the idea of barrel aging a barley wine for more than a year. After finishing off the 20th Anniversary Imperial Stout, they knew it was time for that brew. The name, was on accident.

If you’ve spent anytime at all around craft beer, you know that there are a lot of beards running around. Garett has openly admitted that his beard growing skills leave much to be desired. He has “beard envy.” The rest is now history.

Beard Envy is 9+% English-style barley wine aged in tertiary use Buffalo Trace bourbon barrels. The final result is worth it. A beer that balances flavors of both the base beer and the barrel. Available now for a limited time.

Cigar City Makes Up For Five Anniversaries

Cigar City Brewing (Tampa, FL) will soon turn five years old. What they haven’t done up until now is commemorate each yearly milestone along the way. For what is craft brewing if you can’t make a special birthday release right?

To make up for it, Cigar City’s five internal departments are creating their own unique Cigar City 5 Beers for 5 Years creation each of the missed years. Expect an offering from the brewery’s packaging, cellar, brewers, tasting room, and brewery reps/marketing team.

The first reveal in the series is an American-style barley wine. This release comes from the brewing team.

Texas: Grab Martin House’s Sugar & Spice Barleywine

Martin House Brewing Company (Texas) is releasing a new boozy offering for the Texas cold – Sugar & Spice Barleywine.

The beer is brewed with cinnamon, vanilla, nutmeg, plus one not-so-secret addition, Mexican brown sugar.

If you are near Fort Worth, look for this to tap on Friday, December 13th.

Red Brick Slings Beards & Bourbon in Boozy Newbie

Coming in January, 2014 is a brand new bourbon barrel offering from Red Brick Brewing – Beard Envy.  You know there is no shortage of beards in the beer industry. If you don’t have one/can’t grow one, this might be the beer for you.

Back in July of of this year, the brewing team at Red Brick filled Buffalo Trace barrels with a 9% barley wine. It is quietly waiting for the first of the year, to show off what its got.

I’ve already tasted this brew,  from the rack. You love malty, caramel-y barley wines mixed with vanilla/oak flavor?  This is the beer for you.
