Lagunitas had to cut Brown Shugga’from it’s lineup last year. Brown Shugga’ is a more expensive beer to produce, and for every case of Shugga‘ Lagunitas brewed, they were short 3 cases of their daily beers. Production with the new brewhouse installed, and Brown Shugga’ has made it’s return. The beer exists thanks to an accident. Lagunitas had a failed batch of Olde Gnarlywine in 1997, so they tried to fix it with brown sugar. You know what happened from here.
Founders Bolt Cutter Barleywine Arrives In November
Founders Brewing Co. (Grand Rapids, MI) has announced a date for Bolt Cutter, their celebratory 15% barleywine. The beer joins the coveted Backstage Series, alongside the likes of CBS, Curmudgeon’s Better Half& more. It’s a barleywine dry hopped with cascade hops, partial aged in bourbon barrels, partially aged in maple syrup bourbon barrels. It has been bottle maturing since July, 2012.
What’s in a name? The brewery explains:
Years ago,” says Co-Founder, President & CEO Mike Stevens, “when our brewery was located on Monroe, we were defaulting on our loan. Eventually, the bank called and threatened to chain our doors shut if we didn’t come up with the money that we owed them. We had seven days to come up with half a million dollars.” “So I bought a pair of bolt cutters,” says Co-Founder, Vice President of Brand & Education Dave Engbers. “We were determined to keep our doors open and to keep brewing beer, no matter what it took. Luckily, we never had to use them.” Engbers keeps the bolt cutters in his office as a reminder of how far we’ve come and the journey we’ve taken since brewing our first beer in November 1997.
Victory Brewing Company (Downingtown, PA) had to put “Old Ho” aka Old Horizontalon hold due to capacity issues. The last time that barleywine has seen the light of day was nearly 2 years ago. The above indicates plans by Victory to release a bourbon barrel aged version of Old Horizontal.
Dark Intrigue(Storm King in bourbon) was released last year, and found instant success. More barrel aged offerings were being planned. Fingers crossed for more Old Horizontal in the near future. (It won’t be in 2012.)
Cigar City (Tampa, FL) has released tribute beer Leon. The beer honors Mr. Coker was a cabinet maker who did several tours in WW II, where he was wounded twice for which he received two Purple Hearts. His other medals include with Oak Leaf, Crois De Guerre, American Defense Service Medal, EAMETO Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge GO 53, and Bronze Star Medal. He passed away earlier this year.
Terrapin has been aging their edition Jerome & Spikes 2011 Barley Ryne in bourbon barrels in Athens, Georgia. Well, at least 1/3 of it. The beer is a blend of barrel aged and non barrel aged beer.
