Just when you think you’ve heard everything, read this. A Texas man’s stomach is acting like its own brewery.
Every so often, this man’s blood alcohol would spike to 3-5 times the legal limit. He was drunk. However it’s not from drinking. Apparently a few doctors passed off the condition, thinking he was a closet drinker.
As it turns out, he has an abundance of brewers yeast built up in his stomach. Namely Saccharomyces cerevisiae, used in sour and wild ales. Basically, when this patient ate a lot of starchy foods or simple sugars, it would ferment into alcohol.
The condition is dubbed “auto-brewery syndrome” and it is actually a recognized condition. Between you and me, I’ll stick to drinking it the traditional way. {NPR]
