Troegs “Hop Rocket” Explained [VIDEO]

Troegs Hop Rocke

Troegs Brewing (Hershey, PA) has a brewing contraption dubbed “The Hop Rocket.” Above is the rocket on display last week at the Craft Brewer’s Conference in D.C.   The rollable rocket looks like something from a 50’s space movie, but serves an integral purpose – making your beer more hoppy. See the propaganda video below.

Beer Street Journal Video: Inside Red Brick’s Biggest Beer

Red Brick Brewing (Atlanta, Georgia) just brewed their biggest beer to date – 20th Anniversary Imperial Stout.  The beer clocks in at the highest ABV they have ever created – 10.5% ABV.

Instead of doing another American Strong Ale – Garrett Lockhart and Steve Anderson and brew crew went another direction. And big. This boozy imperial stout doesn’t disappoint straight out of the brite tank (finishing tank) and most definitely won’t after 4 months in Buffalo Trace barrels.

In keeping with the past, 20th Anniversary will arrive in 12oz/4 packs and draft. Look for it’s arrival late Summer, 2013.

This Is Founders New Canning Line In Action [VIDEO]

Founders Brewing (Grand Rapids, MI) announced last week they will start canning for the first time in their 15 year history. Interestingly, the actual canning line was on display at the Craft Brewer’s Conference in Washington D.C. This is the actual machine at work. Because the announcement was so new, there were no prototypes of the cans. Wisconsin based Stevens Point Brewing apparent has a similar canning line to this – the one Foundershas purchased.  The Brew Pack 150 by the Switchback Group.

This is the canning line in action. (Using Point cans as an example.) Look for All Day IPA by the pool this summer.

Beer Street Journal Video: Pizza Boy Cans Sour Beers

Pizza Boy Brewing (Enola, PA) has been spending a little bit of time here in March experimenting with canning sour beers. The small brewpub/pizzeria has an impressive lineup of sours and fruit infused berliner weisse. Using We Can Mobile Canning (another Pennsylvania Company) head brewer Terry Hawbaker is seeing how the funky, fruity offerings hold up in cans.

The brewery is hoping to launch the the cans (if all goes well) late Spring, early Summer, 2013.  Pizza Boy is also undergoing a multi-million dollar expansion/brewery build out just down the road from the current location.  Look for an inside look from Beer Street Journal later in the week.
